WEYBRIDGE SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2022
SUMMARY OF OBJECTS

(i) to promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting the area of benefit;

(ii) (ii) to educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area of benefit;

(iii) (iii) to secure the preservation protection development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in the area of benefit, including parks, open spaces, footpaths and facilities for recreation, health, education and transport;

(iv) to promote civic responsibility and good citizenship in the area of benefit by the dissemination of information on local matters affecting the community and the organisation of community related activities, including but not limited to regular newsletters and electronic messaging, educational talks and competitions to encourage student participation.

REPORT ON THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES BY OBJECT
Object 1. To promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting the area of benefit:
-
The Planning Panel continued to evaluate and make representations with regards to Planning Applications with emphasis on high standards and of ensuring that developments were in-line with the local plan.

The Society made comments during consultations on the draft of the local council’s new Local Plan and its supporting guidelines.

The Society met with and lobbied the local Member of Parliament, Dr Ben Spencer, and County and Borough Councillors concerning the need to preserve the Green Belt and in relation to the policies emerging in the new Local Plan.
Object 2. To educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area of benefit:
- The Society hosted a talk on October 7[th] by Sandra Milton-Taylor on George Fergusson Wilson F.R.S. – the Weybridge resident who founded RHS Wisley.
Object 3. To secure the preservation protection development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in the area of benefit, including parks, open spaces, footpaths and facilities for recreation, health, education and transport:

The Society made significant contributions to the project team comprising the NHS, Elmbridge and Surrey Councils in the development of a community hub in the centre of Weybridge to include health, library, senior citizen and community facilities.

The Society worked with Elmbridge and Surrey Councils on the improvements programme for town centre footpaths and cycleways. A major contribution from the Society related to safety considerations of mixed use pathways .

The Society responded to planning applications that would potentially have had a deleterious impact on Conservation Areas and locally listed buildings. The Society responded to a consultation on locally listed buildings.

The Society liaised closely with the Weybridge Town Business Group and Elmbridge Borough Council concerning landscape improvements in the High Street.

The Society supported Armistice Day, including the laying of a wreath at the War Memorial.

The Society continued to support the Weybridge Town Business Group, including a donation towards the cost of providing Christmas lights.

The Society continued to work with local schools and other local organisations – e.g. Weybridge in Bloom and the Churchfield allotments, for example.
Object 4. To promote civic responsibility and good citizenship in the area of benefit by the
dissemination of information on local matters affecting the community and the organisation of community related activities, including but not limited to regular newsletters and electronic messaging, educational talks and competitions to encourage student participation:

The Society, in conjunction with the Weybridge Town Business Group, organised a highly successful summer fair including performances from local schools and arts organisations, stalls from local charities and sports clubs, market stalls and a dog show.

The Society published 1 Magazine covering local history, conservation, heritage, and natural history topics. It sent out 35 email bulletins covering local events and issues of interest to members.

The Society’s website was regularly updated with its directories of local organisations and activities plus other information such as Weybridge history.
