Achievements and Performance
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | Following the successful ‘official’ celebration event for the creation of Freedom Skatepark & Youth Centre, which took place in October 2022, Flipping Youth had a quieter year in its operations throughout 2023/24. We continued to support several participants of the business launch programme ‘Just Dweet’. This included one participant receiving a $128k JMD grant to support the scale-up of his clothing brand, facilitating his ability to acquire stock at reduced rates and increase profit margins. This young person was someone who was involved in getting hands on and actually building the skatepark, having previously completed the ‘Planting Seeds’ programme with Flipping Youth and Concrete Jungle Foundation, whereby he was paid for an internship throughout the whole skatepark construction period, learning new skills about working with wood and concrete, whilst earning a competitive wage. The ability to establish financial backing is a prevalent barrier to young people in Jamaica being able to explore their entrepreneurial ideas and start new businesses. Finding employment can be very difficult for those lacking formal educational qualifications, there is also a strong stigma around class, which regions people are from and those with criminal records. These factors all add to the importance of young people who face any of these barriers to have the opportunity to explore self-employment. Flipping Youth is happy to be able to provide this sustained support for a young person who has demonstrated his dedication and commitment to the Freedom Skatepark community initiative, and may not have been able to fulfil his ambition to develop his clothing brand without some financial support. |
Financial Review
| Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period |
Para 1.21 | The financial position of Flipping Youth as the year closes is sound and sufficient to carry out our intended activities. |
|---|---|---|
| Our remaining funds are restricted towards funding the ongoing development of Freedom Skatepark and the associated ‘Just Dweet’ business launch programme. |
||
|---|---|---|
| Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held |
Para 1.22 | Flipping Youth does not currently hold any reserves. |
| Amount of reserves held | Para 1.22 | £0.00 |
| Reasons for holding zero reserves |
Para 1.22 | Flipping Youth is operated by a team of volunteers who work remotely and meet either online or in free of charge spaces, meaning that there are no operational overheads associated with staffing. All staff have undertaken safeguarding training and had DBS checks as part of their work with young people outside of Flipping Youth. Minor operational expenses are covered by trustees personally. Trustees provide their own IT technology to work on Flipping Youth related activities, so there is no requirement to purchase laptop computers for staff. |
| Details of fund materially in deficit |
Para 1.24 | None. |
| Explanation of any uncertainties about the charity continuing as a going concern |
Para 1.23 | There are no current uncertainties regarding Flipping Youth being able to continue. We plan on maintaining our current strategy and continuing to support our primary objective, with no plans to expand or take on further responsibility. |
