FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2022
The year 2022 has been a meaningful one for the Impact TrusL tth in South Africa and the UK. It maths the
'gradtJation' of the last 8 years of effort that has focused predominandy on building the RO￿e5 to Resilien
programme. The last year has seen the T[￿t gjceessfulty ￿lUate its inCU￿tor, R2R SA NFC and hand over
the reins of the now rebranded s￿inati111ty Matters to Geonjie RaLtliffe and Mi5etwa mrany￿6. previously
employees trained arKI developed with us over the last four years. It has atso seen the Creation of Ecowida
Routes led by Martin Foulkes arKI the separation ofthe Impact Tr￿l South African charty from the UK,
effective January 2023. ImpactTrust SoLrth Africa i8 now merging with FI￿* Trails Africa and Activate A¢8demy
to focus its work on continuingto dowelop youth 8o¢wI Capital and active Gitizenship.
Mergers in the Charitab￿ space are unC￿lMon. Yet they are an important and powerful optlon, one that can
empower organ￿at￿lS and enable them ts tske a swifKant to scale. We believe this can onty serve our
beneficlafles better and we know that the COr￿oItdati0n of the Impact Trttst SA'S work with that of Five Trails
Africa and Activate Academy will help further expand the reach and contfinue to refine the content of the
Routes to R￿llence progrdmme, connecting them with the incredible currioulum content and programme
development offering5 provided ty Activate ￿adernY and supported the presen￿ of'boots-on.the-ground'
throtjgh the active facilrtatoys at FNe Tr8115 Africa. The South African Tntst - sLK)n to be renarned - will be
guided by Chris MeintJ"es with a combined Lh)ard that will continue to irKlude Mike Freedman, Simon Peile.

In the UK. the Impact TriBt ttas supwrted the estsblishment of Ecovida Routes led by Martin Foulkes as
Executive Director. EcoV¢da Routes will continue to lead and develop the Routes to Resilience work in the UK.
Woiking in service of the needs of youth and educatots in the UK, whiL8t aLw r￿lIa￿ratIng with Five Tralls
Africa and the gfowing ￿0bal Community of Practts established to serve education for sustalnabll
leadership, Martin will be expanding these offerings to Ffftide a(xredrted CPD eduLZtor development support
so needecl to embed sustsinability in the cU￿￿VIum. As excitin& Martin. who 15 an accredited Duke of
Edinburgh's Award Leader. will be working with partners to create urt￿￿e r￿rth-s0Uth sustsinability leadership
learning and social action JourneyB.

Impact Trust in 2011 and their Euidance and supwrt has tr￿n deeply appreck4ted and valued. Al the same
time, we are delighted to be joined ty Shaun Mclnemey and Sean Bellamy who will i* iaking up t￿￿eeShIpS
on the Impact Trust UK board in April.

Routes to Resilience has progressed from idea to reality SIn￿ 2011. From a small class of 10 students at
Cedar HoL￿e in 2017 and a small foutKling of 2, we have over 2.5W young people directty in
our programmes in Sovih Africa. a growing nufflk￿r in the UK aThJ hundr& of educators and wofesstonals
seeking a greater ￿￿ler$￿ndl￿g of our Ootffil wntext and the sjstemr tha1￿ngeS we face. Our social
franchise gtfting model has now kid the foundab.on to reach tero of tI￿n￿5 - and hopefully s￿n fflany

Our decision to pursue Duke of Edinburgh accreditstion for an after4chool enT￿￿rnent R2R programme
Version arose because of the challenges ￿hr￿)IS face in 'colouringouts•k the lines ol stipulations govern
curriculum, the lack of adequate training of teachers in sustainabilrty principles and the urgent need for young
people to understand the future. In South Africa. The Duke of EOlntNJrgh Award. known as The President's
Award for Youth EmpowermenL alms to a(Sdress and prowde a workable youth deveknpment framework for
youth-at.risk There were over 14.0(K) participants in the Awards in tast record120151. HoweNer. less than
17% of these numbeB a￿ students from disadvantsged eommuniti'es.
We are lookingfoward to expandingthL8 signrfKantty in 2023 wtth the trKoader ￿a¢h that new partners
provide Into schooL8. In the UK our partic1r￿tIOn in the Ashoka New CaPa￿.11￿e$ for a New Wortd progr8mme
led us to Martin Foulkes who was also Head ot Enrlchment and Head of Department for Geography at LIWe
Lever School. Working wrth Martin allowed us to further (levelop to the needs of a student group aged 12-14
years. This will become. we ant￿l￿￿te. a Bron￿ levd programme for Duke of Edinburgh ac¢xeditstion. It also
provides meaningful sch(d.based curriculum resources for geogrnphy* and we hope to expand thbs With
further support educator development in the UK in 2023.

The need for a betkr understanding of experien￿ and trmp￿t arrfl to estsblish a medium for continued
engagement with Pjumni is something we have been aware of for some time. It was reiteTrted in the Henley
evaluation rerx)mmendaiions and has berJ)me a funding allocation pri￿lty in 2023. Whilst we undertake
programme evaluats.orts after each pfogramme, the need to understand and provide the opportunty to engage
and re-engage overtime is crtti.cal to really ha￿ a deep sense of we are making a difference, where we
are tsiling to and what we can do drfferentjy.
Sensemaker is a distsibuted ethnography tTr)l that allows stuaents to submittheir personal narratives based
on lived eXgenen￿, providing an optK)rtunrty for accessing pefsonal interpretations as opposed to our
subjective interpretatiors of their feedbacK Sewmaker i8 effeclively a qualitstive tool that allow5 for
ouantitattve patterns to emerge. reflecting how peO￿e inte￿re( engage wiih. and respond to the
programmes and how they Tewrt on the changes they live overtime. By understanding more atoutthe
