The Friends of Calverley Grounds have ensured the public park is a place that benefits inhabitants of Tunbridge Wells by raising money and building a playground in the park, funded by residents, businesses and grants. This provides a much-needed play space for families to bring their children.

The Friends of Calverley Grounds continues a programme of community gardening invigorating some under planted spaces.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main The Friends continue to struggle with the lack of active members, but a achievements of the charity group supported Kent High Weald Partnership in implementing ‘part 2’ of during the year the Sussex Lund sponsored ‘meadowing’ project in the Grounds. We worked on several days with volunteers from Kent High Weald Partnership planting insect friendly native species in ‘scrapings’ that we had prepared earlier. The results are looking good. Ian Beavis, a member and well known naturalist, led a very well attended walk in July during which he was able to identify and indicate a variety of insects that had been attracted by the enhanced environment. A small number of Friends also worked alongside TWBC Parks Dept and their contractors on a number of occasions during the year. We focussed on renewing planting in the lavender beds and tidying up generally in preparation for Britain-in-Bloom judging. Art-in-the-Park was once again a great success. We sponsored three artists together with whom we worked with children on themes inspired by the aquatic displays provided in association with the Puppetry Festival. An inflatable whale containing a small theatre was the highlight but a person-operated puppet of an octopus also provided a focus for numerous artworks. Great fun was had by all.
