The Friends of Calverley Grounds have ensured the public park is a place that benefits inhabitants of Tunbridge Wells by raising money and building a playground in the park, funded by residents, businesses and grants. This provides a much-needed play space for families to bring their children.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

The Friends of Calverley Grounds protected the future of the park by successfully spearheading a campaign against a proposed office and theatre development by the council. The development would have taken land from the park, ruined a much-loved vista and closed a large section of the park for many years which would have coincided with the coronavirus pandemic when the park was much used. Ultimately the council abandoned plans due to the strength of feeling against it.

The Friends of Calverley Grounds continues a programme of community gardening invigorating some under planted spaces.

Section D Achievements and performance

The year was a difficult one for the Friends. The first 4 months of the Summary of the main period saw activity on two fronts. We worked alongside Tunbridge Wells achievements of the charity Borough Council (TWBC) Parks Dept to layout and replant the 'Dowding during the year Bed', a prominent herbaceous and flower bed situated at the main entrance to the Grounds. However, from early March, TWBC suspended all volunteer working parties across all its parks due to Covid restrictions. Our physical activities did not restart until the Spring of 2021. However, we were active in other ways. We held discussions , led by Kent High Weald Partnership (KHWP) and involving TWBC, about ways we could increase the diversity of plants and wildlife in Calverley Grounds. Our plans, supported by TWBC , involved the Friends applying for a grant from Sussex Lund, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin. The objective was, and is, to increase biodiversity in Calverley Grounds by broadening the proportion of the park left as meadow and by rewilding some of the less well used corners of the park. We were successful in our application for a grant, however we were not able to commence the project this year. Covid restrictions permitting we will be activating the plans in 2020-21 with the Friends providing working parties to support KHWP and TWBC to initiate the project's vision. Elsewhere, on the financial front, we were able to fund the replacement and repair of some of the play equipment in Calverley Adventure Grounds (CAG), which like playgrounds in most parks, was heavily used in the second half of 2020 when playgrounds were once more officially reopened to the public. We expect our financial support of TWBC to maintain CAG to the highest standards to continue next year.
