This annual Dom’s Food Mission trustee report and financial statements spans the period from 1 April 2020 — 31 March 2021 and has been prepared in accordance and compliance with the Dom’s Food Mission’s constitution along with guidance from _the Charities Act 2011 the Statement of Recommended Practice._

## **Aims and Objectives** 

Dom’s Food Mission objective is to prevent surplus in date food from ending up in landfill by redirecting collected surplus foods to people and families who find themselves struggling with food insecurity which results in a positive impact on both community and environment. 

## **Governance, Structure and Management** 

Dom’s Food Mission operates under rules of its constitution adopted in April 2016. Dom’s Food Mission is a Charitable Incorporated Association first registered with the Charity Commission in May 2016. The charities principal aim is to actively  collect and distribute surplus in date food throughout Hastings and the surrounding areas. 

Trustees are elected to the board of Dom’s Food Mission at the Annual General Meeting ( AGM ) in accordance and requirements of the Constitution. Trustees are elected for a period of three years, with retirements required on a rolling basis. Retiring trustees are eligible for re- election. All trustees give their time freely and no trustee remuneration are paid during the term for the role of trustee. Trustees are for guidance with the day to day operations executed by the Chief Executive Officer. 

Daily management is under the jurisdiction of  Dom Warren (Chief Executive Officer) with tasks and duties carried out by a team of volunteers. 

## **Brief History of Dom’s food Mission** 

Dom’s Food Mission was born out of Dom Warren and Alex Warren’s concerns at seeing an ever increase problem of food insecurity with their home town of Hastings. 

So, in May 2015 Alex and Dom began their mission to tackle the issue of food poverty, soon realising that vast amount of surplus in date food was regularly going to landfill which could be going to people in need, Dom’s Food Mission was born. 

The ideology formed by Alex and Dom upon creating Dom’s Food Mission was that regardless of age, status, creed or colour all where welcome. Their first step was to set up a Facebook page explaining who they were, what the aim of Dom’s Food mission was and would anyone like to donate food. The response was overwhelming with over 50 people responding to the first call with food donations that enabling DFM to supply food to over 100 local people.

Dom’s Food Mission continued to grow through their volunteer program which allowed for regular bin drops pick ups from supermarkets and distribution of food to the local community. A big milestone was Dom’s first partnership deal with local Marks and Spencer. Today, Dom’s Food Mission has a fleet of vans and a team of over 20 volunteers that pick up surplus food seven days a week 52 weeks a year, saving over 100 metric tons of surplus in date foods from landfill and giving out thousands of food donations every week. 

## **Review of the Activities and Achievements for the Year** 

At the start of the Covid pandemic which resulted in a national lockdown in March 2020 Hastings like many other communities throughout the uk was severely impacted by the resulting restrictions which lead many families succumbing to food insecurity. Dom’s Food Mission (Now to be known as DFM) experienced unprecedented demand for food donations becoming a community lifeline within Hastings, St Leonards on Sea and surrounding areas. 

Our regular food partnerships kindly continued to supply DFM with surplus food as per norm but demand was soon outstripping supply. As localised businesses finding themselves having to close their doors now with surplus food in stock which would ultimately be sent to landfill, answered DFM’s call for food donations. DFM was then able to distribute over two and a half metric tons of food per week to the community at large. 

Shortly after the start of the Covid Lockdown, DFM realised that getting food to the people in need was a logistical problem that needed solving quickly, even if on a temporary basis. so an Emergency Food Hub within Broomgrove community centre was set up to provide a distribution point for food donation collection. 

Broomgrove Food Hub proved to be successful in answering the question of localised distribution. With this food hub template in place, DFM organised a further four food hubs located in Ore, Hollington, Four Courts and Downs Farm. This allowed for food to be distributed throughout the week. 

Dom’s Food Mission initially expected the setting up of the five Food Hubs to be temporary, Yet the idea of direct food distribution points in areas most in need allowed DFM to expand its operations and reach further into the community. DFM submitted a successful application to the National Lottery which enabled DFM to employ a full- time hub co-ordinator to manage all existing hubs and to future plan the development of new food hubs.

## **Duke Of Edinburgh Award** 

Every year the Duke Of Edinburgh Award ( D of E ) inspires hundreds of thousands of young people, from all walks of life, to explore who they are, grow in confidence and develop the skills they need to successfully navigate life. 

Dom’s Food Mission was contacted by a pupil from a local school asking if he could do some volunteering to help as part of his Duke Of Edinburgh Award. DFM arranged for him to go out alongside our DFM team and gain what was needed. _Below are some supporting images._

## **DFM AWARDS** 

DFM especially during the Covid Lockdown months has had a lot of media and press coverage. A record breaking 5,000 nominations for the 2020 National Lottery Awards were submitted by the public wanting to say thank you to those who do extraordinary things with the help of the National Lottery.The Covid - 19 Lockdown champions and the hometown heroes who’ve been working tirelessly through 2020 to support people in need in their communities. Judges praised all the winners for their exceptional commitment and compassion in their respective fields, which help make peoples lives better every day. Through this DFM got an Environmental Award to which we are very proud to receive as a Food Surplus Charity.

The year was made complete by a special invitation by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Dom and Alex Warren along with their family as representatives of DFM to the London Palladium as a thank you to the Key Workers who continued working during the Covid Lockdown. Dom and his family were personally presented to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who showed great interested in the work carried out by Dom, Alex and the rest of the DFM team.

## **The planned future for DFM, moving forward** 

DFM have created their own charity football movement called Boot Hunger Out. 

We are in plans to organise Celebrity football matches 

Raising awareness of hunger through the football world and together we can BOOT HUNGER OUT! And will help to feed those in desperate need. 

We have our DFM Ambassadors Marlon Harewood who is a former professional footballer, with DFM’S own charity football already for moving forward in planning events, and Kristian Wilson a professional football coach and has trained some of the world’s best.

We are in talks and planning a music event to raise funds for DFM with a local business. 

Our plans to get back in the local schools whom we are delivering our “ Helping Hand “ project in, as to when DFM can restart. At the moment Covid Lockdown has put a temporary stop to this continuing for now. Regular communication is ongoing with the schools. 

DFM will continue to deliver food parcels to people in need and maintain and develop the food hubs.We aim to look for further funding to maintain the new employee role in the food hubs and to get the schools virtual learning project off the ground.

Financial Review
Dom's Food Mission is lunded Ihrough donations, fundraising and grants. The
income enables DFM to fuel the vans to collect in date surplus food from local
supermarkets and oullets and then distribute to people and families , voluntary
groups and olher charities in the Hastings and surrounding areas. During the year
the charity received £214,19712020 £61,0561.The cost of operating the charity
was £143,66012020 £62,576).
Accounting and Reporting Responsibilities
The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees annual report and the
financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom
Accounting Standards ( Uk gene￿1 accepted accounting prdctice ).
The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires trustees to prepare
financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the
state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of
resources of Ihe charity for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the
trustees are required to .
Select suttable accounting policies and apply them consistently.
2. Obsetve Ihe methods and principles in the charilies SORP.
3. Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.
4. State whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to
any material departures disclosed and explained in Ihe financial statements.
Prepare the financial statements on a going concern basis unless it is in
appropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

## **1 Basis of preparation** 

- **1.1** _**Basis of accounting**_ 

These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts. 

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with: 

a) the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2014 and with 

b) the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and with 

c) the Charities Act 2011. 

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102. 

## **1.2 Change in basis of accounting** 

There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and methods of accounting) since last year

The policy for including items within the relevant activity catagories of resources expended is that whenever possible costs are identified with the relevant section of the Association. Each section maintains its own accounting records. 

In particular the policy for including items within costs of raising funds, and charitable activities is: 

Raising funds - the direct costs attributable to fundraising. 

Charitable activities - charitable expenditure shall include all expenditure directly related to the objects of the charity.
