Summary of the main
activities undertaken for the
public benefit in relation to
these objects (include within
this section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit)
BK’S HEROES continues to be a family run charity. Its current trustees
are mother, father, brother and cousins to its founder Ben KING.
Ben had suffered with kidney disease from infancy and was further
diagnosed with brain cancer at age 25. He decided after this diagnosis
that he wished to begin fundraising to be able donate £10,000 to both
Kidney and brain disease research as his way of thanking these areas of
the NHS, who had cared for and looked after him so professionally
throughout his life.
Ben sadly passed away before he could see his dream come to fruition,
whilst only 27 years old, however, he asked his parents to carry on his
dream before he went to sleep for the last time.
It was his wish that monies raised would be donated to relevant research
programs to aid in the search for cures, earlier diagnosis and improved
treatment for patients suffering these diseases. He also wished to have
awareness of these diseases raised and to aid patients and families
struggling with the weight of having to live with these illnesses and their
ongoing treatment.
Our trustee’s dedication to this charity and Bens Legacy is amazing but
was undoubtably demonstrated recently by its Chair, Fiona King, who
went above and beyond her required duties.
Fiona had previously undertaken testing to donate a kidney to Ben, when
he was sadly diagnosed with brain cancer and therefore, under medical
protocols, no longer suitable for a transplant.
She decided to pursue this after Ben had passed away and after much
perseverance was successful in being accepted as an Altruistic Kidney
Donor. The exact dates cannot be given due to patient confidentiality
however we are overjoyed to report that the operations were a complete
success and the recipient of her donated kidney immediately showed
improvements.
Bravo Fiona and we wish continued good health for the recipient
Raising Awareness
One of the core requirements of our charity is to continue to raise public
awareness of Brain and kidney Disease.
The trustees of BK’S HEROES whilst making all decisions on
strategy, daily running of the charity and grants have due regard to
the Charity Commission guidance form PB1 to ensure their actions
are truly for the public benefit

Section D Achievements and erformance p

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

The re-awakening of the world from the dire threat of the global pandemic saw our charity re-establishing itself in the real world with its supporters and donors, by again hosting events to allow them to socialise and get together. If nothing else the Covid 19 lockdown proved to us how much we rely on each other and need to be in our fellow human’s company. The annual ball saw our highest attendance yet with its attendees enjoying a night of fun at Burnley Football Club, with dancing, live music auction and raffle. An afternoon Tea Party was held at a local hotel, again with live music, ensuring the attendees had a wonderful time

RESEARCH

Our £20,000 grant to UCLAN for continued studies into the reason why brain tumours rarely occur in Alzheimer patients and what may prevent this from occurring, was finally cashed as the university returned to business as usual. This funding has not only allowed this intriguing research to go ahead but as a secondary benefit has supported a student scientist through her PhD, ensuring another qualified scientist joins the ranks of those fighting to find cures and better treatment for brain disease. RAISING AWARENESS £1000 was donated to the family of a young boy awaiting a kidney transplant due to extreme financial hardship his family was experiencing during this travel and time intensive period. This donation was shared on social media by all parties involved helping to raise awareness of our charities work and the difficulties that so often are faced by those affected. £349 donated to the mother of her terminally ill child being treated for a brain tumour to purchase a chair bed so she no longer had to sleep on the floor next to him. This small level of help was also shared widely on social media. With donations of bric-a-brac from our supporters we opened a charity shop for two weeks in a local town. This endeavour resulted in a large footfall of shoppers purchasing wares, which in turn allowed us to engage with new supporters and further raise awareness of our charities causes. This was once again a hugely successful endeavour with many shoppers making further donations on top of their bargain purchases. This will be something repeated in future years. SUPPORTER SPONSORSHIP. Our supporters continue to undertake many sponsored activities for the charity raising much needed funds through their sweat, grit and determination. This year saw them: - Wing Walking, Ex-Mayor of Burnley running the London Marathon, Marsden Park Golf Club captain chose us as his charity raising money throughout the year, An amazing seven-year-old ’Heroe’ climbed Mount Snowden for us also in support of his mum who is deaf and awaiting a kidney transplant (He engaged with the charity in thanks for the BK’S team who had assisted his mum set up a line of communication with the hospital to forward her care effectively)
