2020 saw the wortd as we knew it come to an end. as the Global COVID Pandemic wreaked havoc across every aspect of life and many lives also being tragically lost to this disease Rightly so, combatting this disease has been at the forefront of medical science and research however the necessary imposition of lockdowns, and the reduction of nomial activities post lock-down has meant other research, treatment of palients with exisling brain and kidney disease and the Gharities ability to maintain ils business have been devastated. We still see hope in this devastalion, hope that humankind can come together to fight a terrible threal and hope, realised by the medical professions ability to rapidly research and find Ireatment against this disease. Although we are still in the grip of thls pandemic, we see hope thal if minds and public opinion can be direcled so effectively in fighting this disease then there is hope that with the right focus, we may also be able to find the cures and treatments for brain and kidney disease that W6 arg working iowards. Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public beneflt in relatlon to these objects {includ8 within this section the statutory declaratlon that truslees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charlty Commisslon on public benefit) BK'S HEROES continues to be a family run charity. Its current trustees are molher, father, brother and cousins to its founder Ben KING. Ben had suffered wilh kidney disease from infancy and was further diagnosed with brain canr at age 25. He decided after this diagnosis that he wished to begin fundraising lo be able donate £10,000 to both Kidney and brain disease research as his way of Ihanking these areas of the NHS, who had cared for and looked after him so professionally throughout his life. Ben sadly passed away before he could see his dream come to fruition, whilst only 27 years old, however, he asked his parents to carry on his dream before he went to sleep for the last time. It was his wish that monies raised would be donated to relevant research programs to aid in the search for cures. earfier diagnosis and improved treatment for patients SLrffering these diseases. He also wished to have awareness of these diseases raised and to aid patients and families struggling with the weight of having to live with these illnesses and their ongoing treatment. Raisin Awareness One of the Gore requirements of our charity is to continue to raise public awareness of Brain and kidney Disease and although activities in the public domain have been hugely curtailed due to COVID we have maintained an open profile with our supporters via social nelworking. Section D Achievements and performance During this unprecedented year of the Global COVID pandemic BK'S HEROES has had its operations virtually slopped, as have most aspects of life as we know it. So many areas of life have been affected, which of course has included our ability to hold annual events. The annual ball. golf day etc. are major fund raisers for the charity and subsequently income has been greatly reduced. We are delighted to report however that being a completely volunteer led charity, we have been able to maintain a positive income flow Ihroughout the year. Summary oflhe maln achievements of Ihe charity durlng the year RESEARCH No direcl funding has been made to research this year, and the previous years grant to UCLAN has not yet been cashed by Ihem due to closure of the University during COVID lock down protocols. Wo will continue to honour this grant and look foTrvard to the research commencing when life begins to retum to some form of normality. TAR March 2012
