Where it all Started
We formed Chrysalis at Tynedale in 2009 when a successful art class for people with dementia came to an end. The members of the class and their families wanted it to continue. In focusing on individuals and their abilities and independence, they felt it fulfilled a need that was not being met by standard day care services.
The group joined together with three people with extensive management experience in specialist dementia care and Chrysalis was born. We are incredibly grateful to the founder members for their ideas which have led to the uplifting activity and support group we have today. Those members chose the name Chrysalis as they felt it was a new opportunity, a new beginning for them.
We have gone from strength to strength, steadily building up our membership of people with dementia and their families. We have reached hundreds of people, providing a range of tutored activities each week, and responding to new ideas suggested by members. If it is possible, we will do it!
Along the way, we have learned more about dementia and families’ needs and recruited a skilled band of volunteers. We held our 10-year anniversary party in 2019.
We became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, were awarded funding, gained our own premises and now enjoy wide recognition for what we do. And we have had lots of fun too! The founder members of Chrysalis are pictured below.

Latest News
One of our biggest successes this year has been recruiting lots of new members and volunteers. In May 2025 we were lucky enough to recruit Poppy Coles to our excellent staff team. She is developing the Intergenerational Project (IGP) and assisting with coordination on Fridays as well as helping with volunteer recruitment.
We are still enjoying and feeling the benefits of having our own premises. It means we can make the centre a welcoming and familiar place for the members, making them more relaxed and able to enjoy the activity session.
In the previous year, Chrysalis offered an extra day and support over lunchtimes. The numbers were increasing and to keep within our guidelines of maximum 10 members per session (in order to keep the noise and
traffic within the room to an acceptable level), we were having to turn people away. These developments worked really well and now Fridays are as popular as the rest of the week although, as Chrysalis becomes more and more popular, some sessions are oversubscribed again – another challenge for us!
The lunchtime cover was developed because we heard a carer was picking up their member after the morning session, sitting in the car with a picnic for an hour, then bringing them back for the afternoon session. This seemed ridiculous to our team – stress for both member and carer – so we launched lunchtime cover. This needed really thinking through and it has needed to evolve but we now have a core group of around six who bring a packed lunch (this avoids us having to think about food allergies etc) and they have a social time with volunteers who kindly give Chrysalis an extra hour. For the carers, this means a whole day of respite. Both these developments have improved the lives of our members and carers.
This year, we increased the training opportunities for staff and volunteers. We held three sessions in addition to the usual volunteers’ forums, two of which were suggested by our volunteers themselves. One of the challenges for a small, local organisation like Chrysalis is getting itself recognised in the wider community, especially with a small marketing budget. This has always been a challenge for us. Having larger numbers in sessions benefits everyone. There is more of a buzz in the sessions for the members and the volunteers find it easier as members often strike up conversations between themselves (something we encourage). It is also good for Chrysalis’ finances.

Whilst all these things count, we also feel there are still families out there who would benefit from what we offer.
We managed to secure some funding to improve our marketing and, whilst initially we employed a marketing specialist to take on this role, we now do most of this ourselves. Gina has made an excellent job of improving the website and it is now a big part, along with social media, of attracting new members; helping our existing members to stay in touch with latest developments; and is an important link for the professionals with whom we work. We also produce a regular newsletter which is useful and attractive for our current member and carers; it is also a valuable marketing tool as it gets distributed to potential members and professionals. We would like to thank Deryn (Thornalley) for all her hard work in collating ; - the information and producing the finished ps | cf ~~ - . publication.
This year we have attracted 29 new members and 31 new subscribers; we have helped over 56 people by ‘phone or face-to-face contact; and supported an additional 40 carers who contacted us by ‘phone and were previously unknown to our service. We have sustained the membership from previous years. This is fantastic for Chrysalis and for the families. It is largely to do with improving, updating and enhancing the website and social media.

When putting in a funding application, we were prompted to put in how many people we support in a year. After lots of mathematics, it turns out it is over 800.This is a fantastic achievement for a small organisation with a very small marketing budget; we support people nationwide.
Gina, our lovely co-ordinator, works very hard on the website. Sorting out the website was very satisfying for us as we had been given varying advice from experts; some advice was going to cost large sums of money. It is now easy to access information and the website is very user friendly. New people can ‘subscribe’ to our newsletters
and timetables; this is a soft introduction to Chrysalis. When people first get a diagnosis of dementia, it can be a great shock so joining a new club can be quite scary. We’re excited to share that our website is now much more visible online. A recent update has significantly boosted our search engine ranking; when searching for dementia and Hexham or Wylam, we now appear on the first page, and often at the top. This improved visibility means more people can now find us, learn about our cause, get involved and potentially give us money!
Another thing to be proud of is we have recruited 30 new volunteers which is excellent as they are a crucial part of Chrysalis.
An additional pleasing item from this year is the recruitment of two new tutors. New people are beneficial as they bring new ideas and help to keep Chrysalis fresh.

too noisy and busy, which is confusing for people with dementia. So once again, it is a balancing act for us!
Janet, who is our Trips Co-ordinator, has continued to make a good job of this project. She has had imaginative ideas and has run over 10 trips and outings. This is an opportunity for couples (and single people) to socialise in the wider community with some subtle support.

We’ve done some networking with the Priory School, and we’ve had some of their students doing work experience, cleaning up outside for us, and a lovely visit from their choir.
Chrysalis has always been passionate in supporting the whole family and the support for carers or partners has been enhanced this year. We received extra funding for our specialised carer support worker, Mel, who was/is our pottery tutor.

Member Support
Chrysalis was designed using ideas from the original three members and three carers in 2009. They told us they felt there was no provision for them, they felt unable to participate in mainstream community groups because everything happened too fast, there were too many instructions, sometimes all at one time. They felt embarrassed that they were unable to keep up. The only alternative at that time was traditional day care where they felt patronised and there seemed no scope for individuality. One member told us she felt as though she was being herded like a flock of sheep.
Working with these comments, Chrysalis was designed to allow people with dementia to participate in activities but with some subtle support. The reason volunteers were recruited as opposed to care staff was based on the idea that volunteers attended Chrysalis because they actually wanted to be there and enjoyed their role. Volunteers were recruited with the aim of providing 1-2-1 ‘buddying-support’. This enabled the member to gain the maximum from the session and also provided friendship. It is interesting to note that the advised ratio in statutory organisations is 1-to-8, so the 1-to-1 support that Chrysalis offers is unique.
The original group decided it should be run as a club and therefore the people with dementia should be referred to as members, enabling them to be recognised as an individual as opposed to being labelled by their illness.
Chrysalis still adheres to this ethos; we are now lucky enough to provide 1-to-1 support from volunteers most of the time. We are always interested in ideas from members and carers as well as volunteers and staff on how we can improve the service we offer.
Every volunteer has an induction and undergoes training, where non-patronisation, friendship and enabling are stressed as core skills.
Attention to the matching of volunteers to members is always given a lot of thought.

Specialised Groups
While our main work revolves around supporting people (over 65 in our centre at Hexham), we have other smaller projects running alongside this.
The Wylam out-reach remains a small and happy group. It is held at St Oswin’s Church Hall twice a month, which is a lovely light, welcoming hall. This year they increased the number of members and volunteers attending dramatically.
This project is fronted by Liz Flynn, a former trustee, and co-ordinated by Janet. The members have enjoyed accessible bike rides, trips out with the members from Hexham, as well as sessions at St Oswin’s. Liz makes an excellent job of this project and is very committed to a successful group in this area.
We formally ran a specialised group for people under 65. This has now been amalgamated into our mainstream membership. However, if the demand for this group grew, Chrysalis would look at setting it up again.
The Intergenerational Project is one of our favourite projects; this is funded by the If Only fund. In recent times the project had to be put on hold because of the large number of COVID cases in schools. We managed to resume this lovely project and have plans to develop it further, especially now that we have recruited Poppy. Chrysalis partners with Chollerton First School which we feel has similar values to Chrysalis and they are a joy to work with. We have plans to expand the project to include other age
groups and have already started exploring these ideas.
In the stated year, the activities included art, sport, singing and gardening. The children work with members, supported by a volunteer, and games and activities are designed to cement friendships.
Our trustee, Sheelagh, leads this project very well indeed; her past experience in teaching means she is well equipped for the job. Her people skills with the children and the members are fantastic.

Supporting Families/Carers
Mel supports family carers in ‘phone calls, the support group, the Carers’ Information Course and in person. She also supports After Carers by encouraging social interaction and organising trips; this helps carers who have been bereaved to get back out into the community.
In March, we organised and ran another Carers’ Information Course. This is mainly for new carers, and we have speakers each week who are specialists in their area of expertise. They included a psychiatrist, a solicitor, occupational therapists and many more. The carers leave feeling more confident and they have lots of contact details to use when the need arises.
The professional speakers gave their time willingly and we had good feedback about the course. Thanks to Elisabeth and Mel for organising and running the course.
Chrysalis took a big step forward when we
introduced all-day sessions to members who were very settled within the club who we felt would benefit from a whole day. We have an excellent support team over the hour of lunchtime, enabling the co-ordinators and volunteers time to prepare for the afternoon session. As well as the members benefitting, the carers get a whole day for some respite which they enjoy. Our ethos has always been to get the members settled and happy then we can give the carers respite and support.

Our Volunteers
Chrysalis is always amazed at the high standard of our volunteers. This happy willing band of people come to Chrysalis with one thing only in mind – to give the members the best time possible! Their dedication, empathy and determination to ‘get it right’ for our members is breathtaking.
As Chrysalis has grown so has our professionalism and the current volunteers have been willing partners in this. The present team, some of whom are young adults, take their volunteering role seriously. They are keen to learn and enjoy a discussion about how best to support a member.
All volunteers do a safe-guarding course either online or in person; they provide us with references and complete a DBS check. Gina, Janet, Poppy and the lead volunteer, Sheelagh, are very good at organising the sessions and the volunteers enjoy
knowing exactly what is expected of them. Matching members to volunteers is quite an art and needs attention to detail.
Making members happy and able to gain the most enjoyment out of a session is always our
primary goal. For the students, we provide references and a record of placement details to anyone who requires it. We currently have around 75 volunteers on our books, 27 of these have been recruited in the stated year which is a huge achievement.
The volunteers are supported by training, forums, guidance and information. This year we increased the training opportunities for staff and volunteers. We held three sessions on What is Dementia, Rarer Dementias, and Behaviour we find Challenging. The last two were run by external facilitators. These training sessions were well attended by the volunteers and we got good feedback regarding the learning experiences. The volunteers enjoy the social element, both with each other and with the members and their families.

We are very grateful to them for their input and suggestions – they spend the most time with the members and know them best!
They, like the trustees and the staff, get a great sense of satisfaction from the work we do to improve people’s lives and help them to live well with dementia.
Most of our volunteers work with the members but we were delighted to welcome Deryn (Thornalley) to the administrative side of the organisation. She produces an excellent newsletter, collates the invoices and completes many other useful jobs.
The trustees are so grateful to all our volunteers and are fully aware that Chrysalis could not function in its present form without this great band of people.

Our Employees
Most of you will have met Gina (Marrow) who is our lead co-ordinator and manages the organisation; she seems tailormade for the job – her enthusiasm, efficiency and dedication to Chrysalis is a joy for the trustees. She began by working too many voluntary hours but gradually we are building a team to support her. Gina took on some of the marketing duties and, as usual, has made a sterling job of it, attracting new members, carers and volunteers, as well as attracting new fundraisers and raising the profile of Chrysalis.
Mel (Hopwood) was/is our pottery tutor and has been associated with Chrysalis for more than 10 years. We were delighted when she successfully applied for two part-time roles. She does admin, caretaking and carer support. She is efficient, willing and an asset to the organisation and has taken the carer support project to a new level.
Janet (Brook) was already a familiar face, and we were delighted that she took on the role of organising trips and outings. She has great imagination and her ideas have included the pantomime, the alpacas, as well as cinema and theatre trips, South Tyneside Railway, healthy walks, a dementia-friendly carol service at Hexham Abbey, and trips to Hexham Races. The work that Janet does enhances what Chrysalis has to offer.
Poppy (Coles) is the latest member of staff to join us; we welcome her. She is already a valued member of this happy team.
The trustees are aware of the high standard of work our staff achieve and we are very grateful for their dedication and commitment to Chrysalis. It is a happy, efficient team which reflects well onto the members and carers and creates a lovely atmosphere at the centre.

Our Board
Our board is made up of five volunteer trustees. All have had personal experience of dementia in some way; two were dementia professionals. We have experts in various fields – finance, legal, fundraising, social work etc. We work together as a team very well and, because Chrysalis is such a positive environment, those who can, work on the operational side too. This year has seen great growth and a feeling of establishing Chrysalis in the community for the board. We are proud of how we have grown and adjusted after the pandemic, in taking on the lease of our own premises, whilst always adhering to our values and keeping the quality of our services for the families.
As Chair, I feel supported by the other trustees immensely. David, our Treasurer and Vicechair, spends countless hours on our finances and has everything ship-shape for the external auditors. His other skills include DIY, management issues and problem-solving.
Sheelagh leads on the Intergenerational Project, for which her teaching experience makes her perfect. She represents the volunteers at board level. Her other skills include looking after the plants and the outside space; she is also lead-volunteer at the sessions on Wednesday afternoons and knows the members and the volunteers very well indeed.
Mike, a former carer, is knowledgeable about carers’ rights, information and relevant contacts. Mike helps run the carers’ group and formally ran the young people’s group. His skills include DIY, helping with trips out and raising money for Chrysalis, including his marathon bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats a few years ago.
Our newest trustee is Elisabeth (Wilson); she is a former carer and already aware of what Chrysalis provides. Elisabeth’s skills include organisation work, knowledge of members’ and carers’ issues and helping with operational work. She does an excellent job of organising our annual Carers’ Information Course.

As Chair, I apply for most of the funding, oversee the organisation and support the staff and volunteers as necessary. I problem solve and often have the vision for development ideas and enjoy taking them forward. Chrysalis was honoured to be invited to an event at 10 Downing Street which was to launch the announcement of the Dame Barbara Windsor Fund into dementia research and was also funded by the government.
Chrysalis would not function without the dedicated support and enthusiasm of the trustees and I am extremely grateful to them all.

Our Tutors
At Chrysalis, we seem to attract lovely people, whether they be members, carers, volunteers, tutors or supporters. Our tutors try to balance giving the members a bit of a challenge and trying not to make things too hard. Most are local self-employed, small business owners and we are pleased to support them. They are always willing to ‘go the extra mile’ in order to give our members a happy fun-filled session and, if possible, create something they can take home.
If we are considering a new tutor, we meet with them to ensure they are familiar with the criteria. A lot of thought goes into the session content which, combined with Gina’s input, ensures they are happy, relaxed, nonpatronising sessions. If we can add a bit of learning too, we are happy.
Our tutors provide a wide range of activities from art and crafts to music, sport to indoor gardening, pottery to local speakers. This year we have attracted two new tutors; they delivered sessions in drumming and Chinese origami.

Our Club Ethos
When someone becomes a Chrysalis member, the whole family is involved. This means everyone can be part of the club, contribute, have a say, and see how the person they care about is getting on. Family members/carers can take part in sessions, take time out, or get involved - even if they are at a distance or at work all day. We are here to help anyone in the family at any stage of the journey, from pre-diagnosis onwards. We are proud to have a successful project supporting carers after they are bereaved, or their partner has had to go into residential care.
The very nature of our organisation and the fact we mostly support older people means that sadly we have to deal with the death of some of our members and carers. The volunteers, who have made close friendships with the members, are naturally upset; we try to say that they have made people’s lives better, even if it has been for a short time.

Our Funders
Chrysalis Club Tynedale is not funded by statutory services and is completely dependent on trust funding, contributions from donors, members’ fees and hirers of our premises. We were formally funded by the Tudor Trust, which enabled us to employ our first co-ordinator, a huge step in the development of Chrysalis.
We are funded from organisations administered through The Community Foundation such as If Only, The Prime Fund and Newcastle Building Society.
We are/have been supported by Ballinger, The Joicey Trust, The Community Fund, Social Enterprise Support Fund, The Big Lottery, The Screwfix Foundation and the Masons. We are grateful to all the trust funds who support us.
This year we were involved in several excellent fundraising events including The Tynedale Beer Festival and a ceilidh. We were also lucky enough to be the recipient of the Haydon Bridge Festival.
The ceilidh was run jointly with The Charlotte Straker Project in Corbridge. Great fun was had by all and it was well attended.
Sponsorship is a great way for Chrysalis to raise money as well as awareness. We were lucky enough to have several runners (as well as a walker) in the Great North Run and the Junior Great North Run; we also had someone who ran in the Paris Marathon, and someone who ran the Dark Skies Kielder 10K for us. Most of our runners (and walker!) had a personal connection to Chrysalis and wanted to support us because of the good work that we do.

We are very grateful for the generosity of family members past and present for their personal donations and help at fundraising events. Several of our volunteers have also supported us through their own successful fundraising initiatives.
Chrysalis is working towards becoming sustainable so we are not so reliant on trust funding; this takes time though especially after the knock that COVID delivered to our finances.
We are grateful to everyone who has thought of Chrysalis and raised money for us in various ways, sometimes at the saddest time of their life when a loved one dies. Most of our running costs are funded, although we do subsidise the carers’ project and the hardship fund. With the money raised through donations we are able to provide treats for our members and carers. It may be a yummy cake for someone’s birthday, or a free lunch out on a trip, or some much-needed equipment to make a session more fun.

A Final Thank You…
Chrysalis requires a huge amount of dedication and work to keep it running to the extremely high standard we strive for. Responsibilities and basis of report As Ihe charrty's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordan with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 {Ihe Act").
