Give up on our hobbies because of

We don’t think so!

THE EARLY YEARS…

dementia …?

We formed Chrysalis at Tynedale in 2009 when a successful art class for people with dementia came to an end. The members of the class and their families wanted it to continue. In focusing on individuals and their abilities, they felt it fulfilled a need that was not being met by standard day care services.

The group joined together with three people with extensive management experience in specialist dementia care, and Chrysalis was born. We are incredibly grateful to the founder members for their ideas, which have led to the uplifting activity and support group we have today. These members chose the name Chrysalis as they felt it was a new opportunity, a new beginning for them.

We have gone from strength to strength, steadily building up our membership of people with dementia and their families. We have reached hundreds of people, providing a range of tutored activities each week, and responding to new ideas suggested by members. If it is possible, we will do it!

Along the way, we have learned more about dementia and families’ needs and recruited a skilled band of volunteers. We held our 10year anniversary party in 2019.

We became a charitable incorporated organisation, were awarded funding, gained our own premises and now enjoy wide recognition for what we do. And we have had lots of fun too! The founder members of Chrysalis are pictured below.

LATEST NEWS

COVID was a real challenge for Chrysalis as for most organisations. Finally, we feel we are overcoming the effects lockdown had on families living with dementia. The lasting effects are that people (not just Chrysalis members) have changed their attitudes to socialising. This has been a challenge for all organisations including Chrysalis.

Having taken on the lease of our very own premises, for the first time, in 2021 the trustees worked hard to re-furbish it. We feel we have now turned the Centre into a warm welcoming space which is functional for Chrysalis.

We have carried on with the improvements through 2021-2022 and had electrical work and an improved gas heating system fitted.

These were funded by Egger, Screwfix Foundation and SESF. We also improved the storage, fitted new windows and an entrance door. We got some funding from The Masons for some blinds and were donated a television stand.

All these improvements have helped to make the Centre a functional place, which in turn makes the volunteers life easier, makes them more relaxed and able to support members to the best of their ability. It also means all the rooms are warm, making it comfortable for members and carers, and we are not spending so much on utility bills. It is good, in this day and age, to make your building as efficient as possible.

Both Gina and Mel have taken a huge amount of work from the trustees and enable us to develop the service offered and enhance what we provide.

Enjoying a spot of gardening

One of the challenges for a small local organisation like Chrysalis is getting ourselves recognised in the wider community, especially with a small marketing budget. This has always been a challenge for us. Having larger numbers in sessions benefits everyone.

There is more of a buzz in the sessions for the members, the volunteers find it easier as members often strike up conversations between themselves (something we encourage) it is also good for Chrysalis’ finances.

Whilst all these things count, we also feel there are families out there who would benefit from what we offer.

dementia …?

We don’t think so!

This year we have surpassed all expectations and manged to attract an amazing 43 new members and 15 new subscribers, we have also helped over 12 people by phone or face to face contact. This is fantastic for Chrysalis and for the families. It is largely to do with improving, updating and enhancing the website and social media.

Gina our lovely co-ordinator worked so hard on both. Sorting out the website was very satisfying for us, as we had been given varying advice from experts, some advice was going to cost large sums of money.

It is now easy to access information and the website is very user friendly. New people can ‘subscribe’ to our newsletters and timetables, this is a soft introduction to Chrysalis. Another thing to be proud of is we have recruited 20 new volunteers which is excellent as they are a crucial part of Chrysalis. Another pleasing item from this year is the recruitment of three new tutors. New people are beneficial as they bring new ideas and help to keep Chrysalis fresh.

We are always aware that having too many members at a session can make the atmosphere too noisy and busy, which is confusing for people with dementia. So once again it is a balancing act for us!

“Thank you for taking such good care of her, she really enjoys your sessions”.

Family member

In May 2022 we were successful in receiving over £30,000 in funding from SESF & Lottery. This was for marketing and making Chrysalis more sustainable. With this money we employed Lucy and promoted ourselves more. Part of this was the work done on the website. Lucy has since moved on and we thank her for her work and wish her well in her new post.

Janet, who was already known to us took on the role of Trips Co-ordinator and has made a good job of this new post. She has had imaginative ideas and has run over 20 trips and outings. This is an opportunity for couples (and single people) to socialise in the wider community with some subtle support.

Chrysalis has always been passionate in supporting the whole family and supporting carers or partners has been enhanced this year. We received funding for a specialised carer support worker in January 2021and were lucky to employ Mel, who was/is our pottery tutor.

Thank you again for all your help and support, what would we do without Chrysalis?

Mel supports carers in phone calls, the support group, the carers information course and in person. She also supports After Carers by encouraging social interaction and organised trips, this helps carers who have been bereaved to get back out in the community. Mel is supported by Liese a trained counsellor, this makes a rounded support network for carers.

In February we organised and ran a carers information course. This is mainly for new carers, and we have speakers each week who are specialists in their area of expertise. They included psychiatrists, solicitors, occupational therapists and many more. The carers leave feeling more confident and they have lots of contact details to use when the need arises.

Chrysalis took a big step forward when we introduced all-day sessions to members who were very settled within the club, and we felt would benefit from a whole day. The members bring their own packed lunch and have a separate support team over lunchtime. As well as the members benefitting, the carers get a whole day for some respite which they enjoy.

Thanks for keeping in touch.

Specialised groups

While our main work revolves around supporting people over 65 in our Centre at Hexham, we have other smaller projects running alongside this.

The Wylam out-reach remains a small and happy group. It is held at St Oswins Church Hall, which is a lovely light, welcoming hall. The numbers have fluctuated but we now have some new members and are hoping to increase the offering to twice a month.

This project is fronted by Liz who is a trustee. The members have enjoyed accessible bike rides, trips out to include an ice cream parlour, as well as sessions at St Oswins. Liz makes a good job of this project and is very committed to a successful group in this area.

The young people’s group has ticked along, ably run by Mike, one of our trustees. People under 65 with dementia are a very marginalised group and we received some funding from Newcastle Building Society to set up a specific group.

They have enjoyed some days out 10 pin bowling, some social lunches and some trips. They also had a session of drumming which is always very popular. They have a trip to Beamish planned for next year.

The Intergenerational Project had to be put on hold because of the large number of COVID cases in schools. We managed to resume this lovely project in the stated year, partnering with Chollerton First School. Chrysalis and this school have similar values and they are a joy to work with. In the stated year they produced pottery butterflies and plant displays to decorate the outside of the building.

I loved being with you all and doing activities with you, I hope the next year 4’s will love Chrysalis Club as much as I did.

The children work with members, supported by a volunteer, and games and activities are designed to cement friendships.

– Pupil from IGP group

Our trustee Sheelagh leads this project very well indeed, her past experience in teaching means she is well equipped for the job, her people skills with the children and the members are fantastic.

Because the pottery was not quite finished by the end of term, we invited the children and members back in August to show them their finished products. The day was a great success, and it was nice for us to meet their

parents and grandparents. This project is funded by If Only… Fund.

OUR CLUB ETHOS

When someone becomes a Chrysalis member, the whole family is involved. This means everyone can be part of the club, contribute, have a say, and see how the person they care about is getting on. Family members/carers can come to sessions, take time out, or get involved - even if they are at a distance or at work all day. We are here to help anyone in the family at any stage of the journey, from pre-diagnosis onwards. We are proud to have a successful project supporting carers after they are bereaved, or their partner has to go into residential care.

The very nature of our organisation and the fact we mostly support older people means that sadly we have to deal with the death of some of our members and carers. The volunteers, who have made close friendships with the members are naturally upset, we try to say that they have made people’s lives better, even if it has been for a short time.

Sadly, this year we had to say fond farewells to:

Jean Donald Jean Elphic Joyce Greensides Edward Bird John Stubbes Josie Robson

Some of the families asked for donations in lieu of flowers to go to Chrysalis; we are so grateful to them for thinking of us at such a sad time. We hope it means we are doing a good job for them.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES

During 20-21 our carers (family members) needed more support than ever. During lockdown they became very isolated living with someone whose communication was waning. It became their sole responsibility to stimulate and motivate their partner while receiving very little support themselves. Some carers suffered bereavement (sometimes in very sad circumstances) while being unable to gain support from family and friends because of restrictions.

Because of this the Trustees made the decision to make our carer support more structured and were awarded some funding to employ a dedicated Carer Support Co-ordinator. Mel has made a great success of this project and I think all carers would agree she is well suited to the job.

We now hold a carer support group once a month, this is also open to carers whose partner does not attend Chrysalis. Mel phones around carers just to make sure they are alright on a regular basis. This year we held a very successful Carer’s Information Course supporting almost 20 carers. The professional speakers gave their time willingly and we had good feedback about the course.

Peer support is very important for carers, and this is available at every session once the member is settled and happy to be separated from their partner.

Last year we set up an ‘after-carers’ group. This is now well established. Mel facilitates this very well and the group have had lunches together, walks and trips out. This helps them to get back out into the wider community, some need a confidence boost after putting their life on hold whilst caring. We hope this means carers are supported prediagnosis until they no longer need us.

OUR VOLUNTEERS

Chrysalis is always amazed at the high standard of our volunteers. This happy willing band of people come to Chrysalis with one thing only in mind – to give the members the best time possible! Their dedication, empathy and determination to ‘get it right’ for our members is breath-taking.

As Chrysalis has grown so has our professionalism and the current volunteers have been willing partners in this. The present team, some of whom are young adults, take their volunteering role seriously.

All volunteers do a safeguarding course either on-line or in person; they provide us with references and complete a DBS check. Gina is very good at organising the sessions and the volunteers enjoy knowing exactly what is expected of them. Matching members to volunteers is quite an art and needs attention to detail.

A Christmas treat for our volunteers.

Making members happy and able to gain the most enjoyment out of a session is always our primary goal. For the students we provide references and a record of placement details to anyone who requires it. We currently have around 35 volunteers, 20 of these have been recruited in the stated year, which is a huge achievement.

The volunteers are supported by training, forums, guidance and information. They enjoy the social element both with each other and with the members and their families.

They, like the trustees, get a great sense of satisfaction from the work we do to improve people’s lives and help them to live well with dementia. This year we have re-instated the system of a lead-volunteer and we thank Heather and Sheelagh for taking up this important role.

The trustees are so grateful to our volunteers and are fully aware that Chrysalis could not function in its present form without this great band of people.

Your sessions are lovely, and it’s all down to the volunteers who really are engaging. They try to normalise things so there’s no differentiation between members and volunteers, so no hierarchy. So, everyone is comfortable and joins in.

OUR EMPLOYEES

Most of you will have met Gina (Marrow) who is our lead co-ordinator; she seems tailor made for the job - her enthusiasm, efficiency and dedication to Chrysalis is a joy for the trustees. She began by working too many voluntary hours but gradually we are building a team to support her. This year Gina has taken on some of the marketing duties and as usual has made a sterling job of it, attracting new members, carers and volunteers, as well as attracting new fundraisers and raising the profile of Chrysalis.

Mel (Hopwood) was/is our pottery tutor and has been associated with Chrysalis for 10 years+. We were delighted when she successfully applied for two part-time roles. She does admin, caretaking and carer support. She is efficient, willing and an asset to the organisation and has taken the carer support project to a new level.

Janet (Brooke) was already a familiar face, and we were delighted that she took on the role of organising trips and outings. She has great imagination and her ideas have included the pantomime, the alpacas, as well as cinema and theatre trips and healthy walks. The work that Janet does enhances what Chrysalis has to offer.

Lucy Guthrie worked with us for a short time, Lucy had good people skills and was popular with the families. We thank her for the work that she did for Chrysalis.

It was a really good and well organised morning!

OUR BOARD

Our board is made up of about 6 volunteer trustees. All have had personal experience of dementia in some way. We have experts in various fields – finance, legal, fundraising, social work etc. We work together as a team very well and because Chrysalis is such a positive environment those who can, work on the operational side too. This year has seen great growth and a feeling of establishing Chrysalis in the community for the board; we are proud of how we have grown and adjusted after the pandemic and in taking on the lease of our own premises, whilst always adhering to our values and keeping the quality of our services to the families.

As Chair I feel supported by the other trustees immensely. David, our Treasurer, spends countless hours on our finances and has everything shipshape for the external Auditors. His other skills include DIY, management issues and problem solving. Sheelagh leads on the Intergenerational Project, which her teaching experience makes her perfect for. Her other skills include looking after the plants and the outside space; she also is lead-volunteer at the sessions on Wednesday afternoons and knows the members and the volunteers very well indeed.

Liz leads on the Prudhoe/Wylam District Project, and she has helped make this very popular; people feel well supported at this venue. Liz, as a qualified Physiotherapist working for the NHS, sometimes runs fitness sessions with our members and is an expert on movement; she delivers training to the volunteers sometimes.

Mike is our newest trustee; he is a carer and is knowledgeable about carers rights, information and relevant contacts. Mike helps run the carers’ group and runs the young people’s group. His skills include DIY, helping with trips out and raising money for Chrysalis!

As Chair I apply for most of the funding, oversee the organisation and support the staff and volunteers as necessary. I problem solve and often have the vision for development ideas and enjoy taking them forward.

Chrysalis would not function without the dedicated support and enthusiasm of the trustees, and I am extremely grateful to them all.

Your service is second to none!

OUR TUTORS

At Chrysalis we seem to attract lovely people, whether they be members, carers, volunteers, tutors or supporters. Our tutors try to balance giving the members a bit of a challenge and trying not to make things too hard. Most are local self- employed, small business owners and we are pleased to support them. They are always willing to ‘go the extra mile’ in order to give our members a happy fun-filled session and if possible, make something they can take home.

If we are considering a new tutor, we meet with them to ensure they are familiar with the criteria. A lot of thought goes into the session content, which, combined with Gina’s input, ensures they are happy, relaxed, non-patronising sessions. If we can add a bit of learning too, we are happy.

Our tutors provide a wide range of activities from art and crafts to music, sport to indoor gardening, pottery to local speakers. This year we have attracted three new tutors, they deliver sessions in art, music and carpet bowls.

The atmosphere in the room was joyful and attentive. It was a pleasure to be working with you all.

OUR FUNDERS

Chrysalis Club Tynedale is not funded by statutory services and is completely dependent on contributions from donors, members fees and hirers of our premises. We are generously funded by the Tudor Trust, who enable us to employ our Lead Coordinator.

The Tudor Trust have continued to support us with development ideas. We are also using funds from organisations administered through The Community Foundation such as If Only…, the Prime Fund, Newcastle Building Society. We received funding from Bernicia for our Prudhoe Project. We are also supported by Ballinger, The Joicey Trust, The Community Fund, Social Enterprise Support Fund, The Big Lottery, The Screwfix Foundation and the Masons. We are grateful to all the trust funds who support us.

This year individuals really stepped-up raising money for Chrysalis and we had an amazing year for people fundraising for us in the community. Mike Pottage one of our trustees organised a sponsored cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats gaining a huge amount of sponsorship.

He ‘persuaded’ his two cycling companions to also ask friends to sponsor them and between them raised a whopping £10K.

Mike was walking somewhat stiffly the week after the event and had gone off bananas!! But was still smiling and I think secretly proud of the enormous amount of money they made (and quite right too!!).

Kirk Barclay organised a Family Fun Day for us which was connected to the Masons and held at The Masonic Hall, this raised an amazing £5K and resulted in lots of people having fun.

The Geordie Chapter ran a sponsored Harley Davidson motorbike ride round the perimeter of Wales. They also ran raffles and barbeques for us.

Rosie attended the celebration when they returned to Gateshead and the lovely sound of 50 Harleys pulling into the Harley Garage was lovely. What was even more lovely was … they raised around £10K for Chrysalis – amazing.

They are coming on their beautiful bikes in September to raise a bit more money at a coffee morning.

It is a great feeling to be supporting a local charity that we know does so much good.

The Tynedale Gift Fair chose Chrysalis as their charity of the year and not only did they raise money for us, but they also opened the Fair an hour earlier to give Chrysalis members and carers a ‘quiet hour’ which was popular. Not only did they raise £2.5K for Chrysalis, but they have also chosen us as their charity again this year.

A carer completed a sponsored walk along The Chiltern Way in memory of her father raising some very welcome money for Chrysalis.

We are very grateful for the generosity of family members past and present for their personal donations and help at fundraising events. Several of our volunteers have also supported us through their own successful fundraising initiatives.

We are grateful to everyone who has thought of Chrysalis and raised money for us in various ways, sometimes at the saddest time of their life when a loved one dies. Most of our running costs are funded but with the money raised through donations we are able to buy treats for our members. It may be a yummy cake for someone’s birthday, or a free lunch out on a trip, or some much needed equipment to make a session more fun.

Thank you, supporters!

A FINAL THANK YOU…

Chrysalis requires a huge amount of dedication and work to keep it running to the extremely high standard we strive for. We all love being part of it and get enormous satisfaction from our individual contributions, which all combine to make our organisation as fantastic as it is. Of course, we also have a lot of fun too!!

None of it would be possible without the fantastic help of our supporters, staff and volunteers, and the board.

Thanks to everyone for their ongoing support and dedication.
