Give up on our hobbies because of

dementia …?

We don’t think so!

THE EARLY YEARS…

We formed Chrysalis at Tynedale in 2009 when a successful art class for people with dementia came to an end. The members of the class and their families wanted it to continue. In focusing on individuals and their abilities, they felt it fulfilled a need that was not being met by standard day care services.

The group joined together with three people with extensive management experience in specialist dementia care, and Chrysalis was born. We are incredibly grateful to the founder members for their ideas, which have led to the uplifting activity and support group we have today. These members chose the name Chrysalis as they felt it was a new opportunity, a new beginning for them.

We have gone from strength to strength, steadily building up our membership of people with dementia and their families. We have reached hundreds of people, providing a range of tutored activities each week, and responding to new ideas suggested by members. If it is possible, we will do it.

Along the way, we have learned more about dementia and families’ needs and recruited a skilled band of volunteers. We held our 10 year anniversary party in 2019.

We became a charitable incorporated organisation, were awarded funding for a part time co-ordinator, and now enjoy wide recognition for what we do. And we have had lots of fun too! The founder members of Chrysalis are pictured below.

LATEST NEWS (Challenging times)

COVID was a real challenge for Chrysalis as for most organisations. Lockdown in March 2020 meant we could no longer support families the way we were all used to. Our then operations co-ordinator, Lola Plumb, immediately stepped up and gave herself the task of sending out a daily newsletter in order to keep families engaged and not feel forgotten. She also devised a rota for volunteers and trustees to phone families on a regular basis.

We were aware of the devastating effect lockdown was having on people with dementia getting no stimulation or socialisation. The effect on the carers was equally challenging; trying to keep their partner stimulated completely on their own, with only distant support from wider family, was huge for them. It would be a lonely labour of love we felt. So, we tried to do all we could, at the same time knowing it wasn’t enough.

We were extremely pleased that the spring of 2021 brought very exciting news! COVID

Moving in day…Hooray!

was still about but it seemed that the vaccination programme was getting a hold of it. The other very exciting news was that after 10 years of searching we finally had signed a lease on our very own premises. It had formally been used as an equine shop, selling lots of produce on-line, so there was a lot of re-furbishing needed!! The trustees spent many hours filling black bags, dismantling shelving (which covered the entire games room walls), pulling out the old kitchen, going to the tip etc. It was hard work but great fun and we were delighted to be working as a team face to face again.

We then started to put the Centre together the way we wanted it. We were very lucky to have a lovely kitchen donated and pooling our skills

we managed to fit 90% of it ourselves. We bought chairs and tables, we had new carpets fitted and then got a decorator in before it was ready for public viewing.

dementia …?

We don’t think so!

We were really pleased with the end result and delighted to start introducing members back by the middle of May. Although it was lovely to see everyone again there were challenges because of COVID still hanging around. We started off chatting to the volunteers to see who wanted to return and to make them aware that the sessions and indeed the organisation were going to need to be more professional. Some decided against it (some people’s priorities had changed during lockdown) but new volunteers joined us including some young ones from Queen Elizabeth High School and some psychology students from Northumbria University. We then started introducing members and carers gradually, everyone wore masks and we had Perspex screens on the tables. This was tricky as several members have hearing problems and we don’t always realise how much we all lip-read.

At this time we were just coming to the end of our temporary funding from The Lottery and Social Enterprise Support Fund, which had enabled us to employ two people to

help us support remotely. Anne-Marie found a new post but Liese stayed on with Chrysalis as her role as a qualified counsellor was particularly useful.

We started to plan to re-open the Prudhoe-district project and identified a new venue, as the original venue was no longer available. Liese was employed as co-ordinator with Trustee Liz Flinn taking overall responsibility. We re-opened at St Oswins Church Hall Wylam in September. The venue is lovely and the atmosphere quite cosy; it is usually a small group and we have recruited some lovely volunteers. This project is funded by Bernicia Housing.

The young people’s group has ticked along ably run by Penny, a former trustee. People under 65 with dementia are a very marginalised group and we received some funding from Newcastle Building

Society to set up a specific group. They have enjoyed some days out 10 pin bowling and bushcraft. They also had a session of drumming which is always very popular.

The Intergenerational Project had to be put on hold because of the large number of COVID cases in schools. In the next financial year we managed to resume this lovely project which is funded by If Only… Fund.

In July we were lucky to employ a temporary furloughed worker over the summer; Judy Willis helped enormously with the admin as this was something the trustees did not

have time for. Then in September we were lucky to employ Gina, who I think everyone will agree is perfect for the role. The main co-ordinator role is funded by Tudor Trust.

In the autumn we were allotted some funding to employ an admin worker, caretaker and carer support officer. Welcome to Mel, who we already knew as had been our pottery tutor for many years. We had never needed a caretaker before we gained our own premises. We had never had a dedicated Carer Support Co-ordinator before and Mel has done sterling work in these roles.

Both Gina and Mel have taken a huge amount of work from the trustees and enable us to develop the service offered and enhance what we provide.

This year, 2022-2023, we have employed a Trips co-ordinator, Janet, enabling us to begin organising trips again. We have also employed an extra co-ordinator who is responsible for marketing the organisation; Lucy will start working her full hours in October.

MEMBERS’ BENEFITS

When someone becomes a Chrysalis member, the whole family is involved. This means everyone can be part of the club, contribute, have a say, and see how the person they care about is getting on. Family members/carers can come to sessions, take time out, or get involved - even if they are at a distance or at work all day. We are here to help anyone in the family at any stage of the journey, from pre-diagnosis onwards.

This year we have been delighted to resume face-to-face contact. It was so exciting to see members return; all we wanted to do was give them a big hug, but sadly that wasn’t permitted at the time so virtual hugs were order of the day! Chrysalis enrolled new members and their families and we welcomed them into our ‘fold’. Sadly, this year we had to say fond farewells to:

Keverne Piper,

Audrey-Gail Parkin,

Fiona Park,

Ron Conolly, Belle Foster, David Smith, Alan Cairns

Some of the families asked for donations in lieu of flowers to go to Chrysalis; we are so grateful to them for thinking of us at such a sad time. We hope it means we are doing a good job for them.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES

During 20-21 our carers (family members) needed more support than ever. During lockdown they became very isolated living with someone whose communication was waning. It became their sole responsibility to stimulate and motivate their partner while receiving very little support themselves. Some carers suffered bereavement (sometimes in very sad circumstances) while being unable to gain support from family and friends because of restrictions.

We don’t think so!

We resumed our monthly carer support group in September and now have a regular attendance. This group is facilitated by Mel with Penny and Mike supporting. Mike, as a carer himself, is knowledgeable about information. Penny is a skilled facilitator and being a former Social Worker, understands how the system works.

Peer support is very important for carers and this is available at every session once the member is settled and happy to be separated from their partner.

Something new this year was the setting up of an ‘after-carers’ group. So many carers were bereaved, or their partner needed permanent care after COVID, we felt there was an opening for them to have their own group. Mel facilitates this very well and the group have had lunches together, walks and trips out. It is hard enough to recover from the death of a partner without putting lockdowns and restrictions in the mix.

OUR VOLUNTEERS

Chrysalis is always amazed at the high standard of our volunteers. This happy willing band of people come to Chrysalis with one thing only in mind – to give the members the best time possible! Their dedication, empathy and determination to ‘get it right’ for our members is breath-taking.

The volunteers who resumed working with Chrysalis accepted the more structured approach and adapted accordingly. The new ones, some of whom are young adults, take their volunteering role seriously. All volunteers now do a safeguarding course either on-line or in person; they provide us with references and complete a DBS check. Gina is very good at

organising the sessions and the volunteers enjoy knowing exactly what is expected of them. Matching members to volunteers is quite an art and needs attention to detail. Making members happy and able to gain the most enjoyment out of a session is always our primary goal. For the students we provide references and a trail of placement detail to anyone who requires it. We currently have around 35 volunteers.

The volunteers are supported by training, forums, guidance and information. They enjoy the social element both with each other and with the members and their families. They, like the trustees, get a great sense of satisfaction from the work we do to improve people’s lives and help them to live well with dementia.

The trustees are so grateful to our volunteers and are fully aware that Chrysalis could not function in its present form without this great band of people.

“Mum loves Chrysalis and all your activities; she often talks about it.”

OUR EMPLOYEES

Most of you will have met Gina (Marrow) who is our lead co-ordinator; she seems tailor made for the job - her enthusiasm and dedication to Chrysalis is a joy for the trustees. She began by working too many voluntary hours but gradually we are building a team to support her.

Mel (Hopwood) was/is our pottery tutor and has been associated with Chrysalis for 10 years+. We were delighted when she successfully applied for two part-time roles. She does admin, caretaking and carer support.

Ann-Marie moved on to another job at the end of the funding, but Liese has stayed with us and is an excellent member of the team.

OUR BOARD

Our board is made up of about 6 volunteer trustees. All have had personal experience of dementia in some way. We have experts in various fields – finance, legal, fundraising, social work etc, . We work together as a team very well and because Chrysalis is such a positive environment those who can, work on the operational side too. This year has been an enormous challenge for the board; we have had to adapt with changing restrictions and try and combat loneliness whilst not risking infecting our vulnerable members. We are proud of how we have reacted to the pandemic in that we kept in touch with people as best we could.

We were sorry to lose Penny Wallace as a trustee this year, but we are delighted that she continues to support us as a volunteer.

As Chair I feel supported by the other trustees immensely. David, our Treasurer, spends countless hours on our finances and has everything ship-shape for the external Auditors. His other skills include DIY, management issues and problem solving. Sheelagh leads on the Intergenerational Project, which her teaching experience makes her perfect for. Her other skills include looking after the plants and the outside space; she also runs the sessions on Wednesday afternoons and knows the members and the volunteers very well indeed.

Liz leads on the Prudhoe District Project and she, along with Liese, has helped make this very popular; people feel well supported at this venue. Liz, as a qualified Physiotherapist working for the NHS, sometimes runs fitness sessions with our members and is an expert on movement; she delivers training to the volunteers sometimes. Mike is our newest trustee; he is a carer and is knowledgeable about carers rights, information and relevant contacts. Mike helps run the carers’ group and is involved in the young people’s group. His skills include DIY, helping with trips out and raising money for Chrysalis!

Helen sadly resigned her Trusteeship in the next financial year but had spent countless hours helping us with legal advice, interviewing staff, writing up policies and procedures as well as running sessions, providing carer support and organising parties. We will miss Helen’s skills and dedication to Chrysalis and hope to keep in touch.

As Chair I apply for most of the funding, oversee the organisation and support the staff and volunteers as necessary.

Chrysalis would not function without the dedicated support and enthusiasm of the trustees and I am extremely grateful to them all.

“These days at the club seem amazing, so pleased she has the opportunity to attend”

OUR TUTORS

At Chrysalis we seem to attract lovely people, whether they be members, carers, volunteers, tutors or supporters. Our tutors try to balance giving the members a bit of a challenge and trying not to make things too hard. Most are local self- employed, small business owners and we are pleased to support them. They are always willing to ‘go the extra mile’ in order to give our members a happy fun-filled session and if possible, make something they can take home.

If we are considering a new tutor we meet with them to ensure they are familiar with the criteria. A lot of thought goes into the session content, which, combined with Gina’s input, ensures they are happy, relaxed, non-patronising sessions. If we can add a bit of learning too, we are happy.

Our tutors provide a wide range of activities from art and crafts to music, sport to indoor gardening, pottery to local speakers.

OUR FUNDERS

Chrysalis Club Tynedale is not funded by statutory services and is completely dependent on contributions from donors. We are generously funded by the Tudor Trust, who enable us to employ our Co-ordinator. The Tudor Trust have continued to support us with development ideas. We are also using funds from organisations administered through The Community Foundation such as If Only…, the Asian Fund, Newcastle Building Society and the Thornton Family Grass Roots Fund. We received funding from Bernicia for our Prudhoe Project. In the pandemic we were funded by Lottery and UnLtd for emergency Covid help.

This year we were lucky to be able to continue as Egger’s charity of the year. This is a great honour both for the funding it will bring in, and the recognition for Chrysalis. We received funding from Ballinger, Suez Community Fund and The Joicey Trust. We had an amazing year for people fundraising for us in the community. Although we did not actually receive the monies in this financial year, the events were set up and organised. Mike Pottage organised a sponsored cycle ride from Land’s End to John o’Groats gaining a huge amount of sponsorship. Kirk Barclay organised a Family Fun Day for us.

The Geordie Chapter ran a sponsored Harley Davidson motorbike ride round the perimeter of Wales. A carer is planning a sponsored walk along The Chiltern Way.

In 2021 we received our very first legacy. We felt it was so kind of people to think of us when making a Will.

We are very grateful for the generosity of family members past and present for their personal donations and help at fundraising events. Several of our volunteers have also supported us through their own successful fundraising initiatives. We are grateful to everyone who has thought of Chrysalis and raised money for us in various ways, sometimes at the saddest time of their life when a loved one dies. Most of our running costs are funded but with the money raised through donations we are able to buy treats for our members. It may be a yummy cake for someone’s birthday, or a free lunch out on a trip, or some much needed equipment to make a session more fun. Thank you, supporters!

A FINAL THANK YOU…

Chrysalis requires a huge amount of dedication and work to keep it running to the extremely high standard we strive for. We all love being part of it and get enormous satisfaction from our individual contributions, which all combine to make our organisation as fantastic as it is. Of course, we also have a lot of fun too!!
