## **Trustees’ Report for the year ended 31 March 2023 contd.**

## **CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for year ended 31[st] March 2023**

2022/23 has been another successful year for the group. We have seen an increased demand for our boxes but we have been able to maintain a comfortable balance between demand and our ability to fulfil delivery of orders, although delivery times for some orders have been longer than normal and some have been completed later than we would have liked for the 2023 breeding season.

## **EVENTS:**

We continue to operate from our Cookham Dean workshop, thanks to the kind auspices of Nick and Stephanie Papillon, who keep us fortified with coffee and biscuits. We also kept production moving along by taking some parts home to be prepared. In this way we were able to prepare enough kits of parts for the family box-assembly sessions that we ran, details below.

We attended eight different local events where we ran our workshop sessions for scout, guide and school groups and for local wildlife groups as well as supplying them with finished boxes of various types.

On 4[th] February 2023 we held our annual Homes for Wildlife event, hosted by Wild Maidenhead, at Braywick Nature Centre. A satisfying number of visitors attended and we were able to give advice on using our products for owls and raptors, garden birds, swifts, bats, hedgehogs and bees. The highlight of the event was the assembly of garden bird nest boxes from our kits of parts by the visitors themselves. This is always popular, especially with children and is a great way to get youngsters engaged with wildlife. Ten boxes were built and taken home, as well eleven finished bird and bat boxes.

In May Wild Marlow held its first annual Bee Festival and we were pleased to supply twenty bee hotels for the event.

Wild Marlow also invited us to have our promo stall at Marlow Carnival in October and thirty garden-bird kits were assembled by families. Eight bee hotels were also sold. We donate a proportion of the proceeds of such events to the organising groups to support their conservation work.

On 27[th] October 2022 we held a workshop session for the Marlow Ukraine Collective which was set up to support refugee families who had fled the conflict. The children were delighted to be actively supporting local wildlife by making garden-bird boxes for their Marlow hosts and it was a pleasure for us to be involved. We donated the kits free of charge.

## **“SALES”:**

In total we made 396 nest boxes of various types during the financial year.

A major source of orders for us this year has again been the British Owl Trust, through a contact based near Didcot, Oxfordshire. We have supplied them with 39 owl boxes of various types and expect to be asked to do so again in the future.

The Maidenhead and Cookham Swift Group continues to generate orders and we are hearing of more cases of our swift boxes being occupied by swifts, so perseverance is paying off.

The grand total of boxes of all types made since we started is now more than 1600, as detailed below:

BNBG CHAIRMAN’S REPORT contd.

## **DONATIONS MADE:**

From donations received from our customers, over and above the cost of their boxes, we have been able to make our own donations to local wildlife projects as follows:

£100 to Wild Maidenhead

£12 per month to Berks Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust

We supplied and installed four sparrow terraces free of charge to Cookham schools. We supplied 14 nest box kits free of charge to the Marlow Ukraine Collective as mentioned above

We donated a swift box to Jan Stannard’s Heal Rewilding project for their new Somerset acquisition

We also made some free-of-charge replacement boxes for early ones, made by us, which were beyond repair.

## **DONATIONS RECEIVED:**

A significant addition to our equipment during the year was a BNBG branded gazebo for use at outdoor events. This cost £1053 but we applied for and received a grant of £500 from the Louis Baylis Charitable Trust (Maidenhead Advertiser) towards the cost.

In addition to receipts to cover the cost of materials for our wildlife homes we have received additional donations from some of our customers, for which we are very grateful.

## **OTHER NEWS:**

That concludes my report but I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you for your continued support and dedication to our cause, sometimes in trying conditions. Thanks particularly to Nick and Steph Papillon for the use of their premises and for the coffee and biscuits which make the whole project worthwhile! Also to my fellow trustees and to Brendan King, BNBG Treasurer, who has helped me with ladder-handling and box installations, and to his wife Gwen who has acted as volunteer auditor.

Bob Keene, BNBG chairman.
