## **CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for year ended 31[st] March 2021**

2020/21 has been another successful year for the group. We have seen a continued demand for our boxes and we have been able to maintain a comfortable balance between demand and our ability to fulfil delivery of orders.

## **EVENTS:**

The Covid pandemic restrictions limited our activities somewhat from March 2020 but after lockdown one was lifted we were able to continue making boxes by means of two people at a time meeting up at our workshop, thanks to the kind auspices of Nick and Stephanie Papillon. We also kept production moving along by taking prepared parts home to be assembled.

We were unable to hold any of our usual face-to-face public nest box assembly events this year but were able to host our annual promotional event online via Zoom. Members of three local wildlife groups were invited to attend and more than sixty viewers joined which was a great way to highlight our services and some orders were received as a result. Restrictions permitting, we plan to return to Braywick Nature Centre for this event in January 2022.

In March, 27 tit boxes, previously supplied as kits by ourselves to RBWM and assembled by the students of a local school, were installed, along with owl and kestrel boxes, in the important wildlife conservation area of Battlemead, now owned and managed by the borough council. This operation was instigated by Jason Mills, RBWM Countryside Manager, and was surveyed and supervised by Brian Clews, one of our trustees.

BNBG CHAIRMAN’S REPORT contd.

## **“SALES”:**

In total we made 118 nest boxes of various types during the year, for which we received donations totalling £3811.

We were contacted in December 2020 by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust who had created an initiative to encourage a group of farms in Oxfordshire to put up nest boxes and we were able to provide 18 of these for the project and received donations of £705.

Another major source of orders for us this year has been the World Owl Trust, through a contact based near Didcot, Oxfordshire. This has so far resulted in orders to the value of £570 and is set to continue in 2021.

The Maidenhead Cookham and Marlow Swift Group continues to generate orders and has resulted in sales of fourteen more boxes for us this year. We are hearing of more cases of our swift boxes being occupied by swifts, so perseverance is paying off.

Thames Water continues to provide a valuable source of orders and we have been asked to supply 100 garden-bird nest box kits for their family assembly sessions, value £800.

The grand total of boxes of all types made since we started is now more than 920, as detailed below, and we look forward to breaking the 1000 mark in 2021/22:

BNBG CHAIRMAN’S REPORT contd.

## **DONATIONS MADE:**

A big success for us this year was the request to provide a nest platform for a pair of Peregrine Falcons who took up residence on the spire of All Saints Church, Marlow last year. This has resulted in a clutch of four eggs being laid (April 2021) and we look forward to a good outcome for these iconic birds. Our funds (from donations) enabled us to provide the nest platform free of charge to the Wild Marlow wildlife group who instigated the idea.

We were also able to donate funds for a nest camera for a barn owl box which will provide valuable information for those monitoring the breeding progress of the birds using the box without the need to disturb them.

We also gave a complimentary kestrel nest box to a customer who has been very helpful in promoting awareness of our activities.

## **DONATIONS RECEIVED:**

In addition to receipts to cover the cost of materials for our wildlife homes we have received additional gratuities from some of our customers, for which we are very grateful.

## **OTHER NEWS:**

A new swift support group has been formed in Henley on Thames and we have begun to supply boxes and call players for them but, thankfully, have not had to install them. Henley has an established population of swifts and this initiative is likely to generate continuing orders for us.

That concludes my report but I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you for your continued support and dedication to our cause, particularly Nick and Steph Papillon for the use of their premises and for the coffee and biscuits which make the whole project worthwhile! Also to my fellow trustees and to Brendan King, BNBG Treasurer, who has helped me with ladder-handling and box installations.

Bob Keene, BNBG chairman.
