Brighton Pebbles Trustees’ Annual Report for the period 1[st] April 2022 to 31[st] March 2023

Brighton Pebbles is registered charity number 1166802.

It is a charitable incorporated organisation, registered on 28[th] April 2016, having been operating as an unincorporated organisation since January 2008.

- The main contact address for the charity is: 37 Graham Avenue, Portslade, Brighton, BN41 2WN

The management committee is made up of 6 trustees who are all parent/carers of children and young people with disabilities.

The trustees are:

Lisa Hinton, Anna Hobbs, Anastasia Langford, Lorraine Roberts, Rhianydd Summersett and Marian Tipler

In the event of a trustee leaving post, a new trustee would be sought from the bank of parent carers who are involved in the charity, drawing on relevant expertise to meet the requirements necessary at the time.

The charity also employs a Finance Officer / Fundraiser to carry out all of the administrative and organisational duties needed to keep the charity running.

As the charity is involved in dealing with families, we have a safeguarding policy in place to ensure we follow appropriate guidelines and procedures. Staff and Trustees have had safeguarding training and also have DBS checks carried out prior to taking their positions with the charity.

## Charitable Objects

The object of the CIO is the promotion of social inclusion among families with disabled children and young people, who are socially excluded from society as a result of their disability or challenging behaviour, by providing recreational facilities and opportunities for disabled children, their parents and carers and their siblings.

## Activities

In planning activities for the year, the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit was taken into consideration at trustee meetings. Activities are open to any family known to the charity who have a child or young person with disabilities.

Activities are arranged to support families with disabled children and young people living in the Brighton & Hove area.

## Regular Activities

Our regular activities include:

- A weekly after school family drop-in session every Friday. These sessions are supported by a small team of playworkers who help to engage the children to take part in activities. Parents and Carers stay onsite and have opportunities to network with others offering mutual peer support.

- A weekly parent/carer pilates class offering a friendly class to meet up with others to improve both physical and mental health.

- A parent/carer craft group offering a chance to meet with others to chat whilst working on your favourite craft project. These sessions usually happen around twice a month.

## Main achievements for the period

In addition to our regular activities, we also arrange various other events through the year.

The charity leases a beach hut from Adur District Council and this is used as a meeting point for families during the summer months, with parties, barbecues and picnics arranged evenings, weekends and school holidays. We were also able to offer the beach hut to individual families to hire, giving them a place to go to enjoy the seaside.

Days Out are a big part of what we offer at weekends and during school holidays as these times are when families report the most isolation.

The family day trips have varied in size but attracted an average of 34 people. Our busiest trip this year was a Boat Trip from Brighton Marina, which was for a total of 87 people!

Within this year we have arranged the following trips:

- 4 visits to Sky High Trampoline Park

- 2 visits to Bluebell Railway

- 2 visits to Groombridge Place

- 2 visits to Knockhatch Adventure Park

- 2 visits to Pizza Hut followed by Bowling

- 1 visit to Fishers Farm Park

- 1 visit to Jump In Inflatable Fun

- 1 visit to Thames Valley Adventure Playground

- 1 Boat Trip from Brighton Marina

- 1 visit to Washbrooks Farm

- 2 flights on the Brighton i360

- 1 trip to Drusillas Zoo Park

- 1 trip to the Pantomime in Eastbourne

- 1 visit to Aglow Light Trail

- 1 Christmas Party.

We have also started some trips specifically for young people aged 18-25 and their parents/carers. These have included 2 flights on the i360, 1 train trip to Eastbourne and 2 lunch meet ups.

For Siblings, we have organised a day trip to Brighton Pier and an Ice Skating trip.

When families were affected by school closures due to Teacher’s Strike Days, we subsidised 2 Bowling sessions, a visit to Washbrooks Farm and a flight on the i360.

For Parents, we had a Mum’s Weekend away at the beautiful Micklepage Farmhouse and a Christmas Lunch.

We hired the Kench Hill Centre in Kent for a week in August and were able to offer a holiday to 16 families (a combination of 3 nights, 4 nights, and whole week) A total of 55 people managed to get a break at this lovely place. We were able to fund carers to come along and help families, enabling them to actually have time to relax as a family, as well as spend quality time with siblings. We also brought a cook to cater for such a large group. During the stay we arranged trips to the Kent & East Sussex Railway, the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, The Rare Breeds Centre, Port Lympne Wildlife Park and Wingham Wildlife Park as well as Swimming and Trampolining.

During the period covered by this report Brighton Pebbles has provided activities for 76 different families consisting of 143 adults and 137 children.

## Financial Review

The charity has a Reserves Policy, recognising it is good practice to hold 3 months’ worth of operational costs in the event of the charity needing to wind down. Currently this is estimated at £3172 which is within the £4358 held as free reserves as of 31[st] March 2023

.

Most of the charity’s funding comes from other grant making charities and organisations with grants which are secured during the year.

At the beginning of the period the charity was holding existing grants from the following organisations:-

- Capital grant from Brighton & Hove Council

- Noel Bennett Fund

- Chalk Cliff Trust

- Sussex Community Foundation Grant

- Brighton & Hove Mencap Grant

- Barbara Ward Children’s Foundation

During the year we were fortunate to be granted funds from national grant giving charities:

- Big Lottery Awards 4 All

- Co-op Community Grant

- Localgiving Magic Little Grant

- Barbara Ward Children’s Foundation (year 3)

And from Local Sources:

- Wellesley Charitable Foundation

- Amaze PaCC Partner Fund

- Brighton & Hove Mencap

- Noel Bennet Fund

- Enjoolata Foundation

- Sussex Community Foundation

In addition, we were nominated as one of the chosen charities by Skerrits Independent Financial Advisers and Wealth Managers and have been receiving funds that their staff have raised through fundraising activities over the year.

We also received a donation from Brighton College from their fundraising activities.

We are extremely grateful for all these funders who have supported us and enabled us to continue to support our families.

We have also received donations from private individuals and from fundraising activities.

Brighton Pebbles aims to reduce social isolation for its families by offering activities for families to take part in within a safe and supportive environment. We feel that we have achieved this during the period detailed in this report.

A couple of quotes from families who managed to attend some of our trips during the year:-

_“As a family we love Pebbles trips. My eldest son is always reluctant to go out but will happily do Pebbles activities and feels very comfortable. Pebbles is so important for us as parents as they help us feel less isolated. Sometimes being a parent of children with SEND can be a very lonely life to live”_

_“We so appreciate the days out we are able to do through Pebbles. They’re often the only family trips we get as we don’t have much spare cash and can’t afford to ‘risk’ it not going well if we spend money on things. These subsidised trips mean we can access places we just wouldn’t normally be able to go to, and it takes the stress and pressure off in case it doesn’t go quite as well as we’d hoped. The things we’ve done with Pebbles have been our most memorable family times during holidays for the last few years, so we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who fundraises and donates as these trips mean such a lot to our family.”_
