Chair of Trustees’ Annual Report 2023

• We opened in March 2023. Visitor numbers for the year, excluding out-of season popup bookshop, are 2983, a 15% increase on the previous year.

• The Market House, which was scheduled to be opened in 2025, is now very much on the back burner as a project following the ceiling collapse over Christmas 2023. We cannot move forward until Torridge District Council have agreed to establish a plan of works and we will not begin until their side has been completed. As before, it is currently used as an area for sorting through the collections and occasional temporary displays.

• The bookshop continues to do well, open in Reception outside normal opening and upstairs during the season.

• Following a survey of our fire systems it has been established that the antiquated current setup does not meet current legal requirements. On these grounds the Trustees agreed that we would not open until such time as the works have been completed, hopefully in time for the summer holidays.

• In the light of the two major projects above, the Trustees have decided to withdraw from applying for Museums Association Accreditation for the present and will reconsider when the above issues are dealt with.

• The archive continues the process of sorting, indexing and storing. The long-term plan is to digitise everything and make it accessible online for free.

• The museum is in a good position and expects to go from strength to strength.
