Music In Felixstowe Annual Report 2020 -2021
The past year was a difficult one for all in the music industry. April 2020 saw live music impossible under lockdown. However, to keep our music alive we started a series of weekly streamed concerts, thinking that live music would resume within months. These proved very popular and attracted a new audience from Facebook where we posted the recordings as well as on our website.
Having started the year with a healthy bank balance we could afford to pay all the musicians and offer the concerts for free. The musicians were delighted to be able to perform, having lost all their income, and the situation brought about innovative ways of recording their performances. We launched a Just Giving page to help pay for the concerts and many donations were received from our regular mailing list concert goers and also from the new audience. Many emails and letters of thanks were received to say how much Music In Felixstowe was offering a light in the midst of the terrible situation.
When allowed we started live concerts again to the delight of those who felt they could attend. We asked for donations instead of selling tickets. The first concert was advertised only to a few of our regular concertgoers and was in the open air. This was also streamed on our Facebook page. There followed weekly concerts at the 2 Sisters Arts Centre featuring professional and young musicians, these were also recorded. The last live concert was our Last Night of the Proms given at a local church under strict COVID regulations. We took the precaution of recording some New Years Day music and this was prophetic as a new lockdown was announced at the end of the year, so the recording was played online on New Year’s Day.
The streamed concerts carried on weekly until live concerts were allowed again in May 2021, over 60 altogether.
The Artistic Director had promised the trustees that the funds would not drop below £2,000 during the year and this was achieved thanks to the generosity of the public.
