carrying out this review the trustees have considered the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and in particular its supplementary public guidance on the advancement of education for the public benefit.

**The charity carries out a wide range of activities in pursuance of its charitable aims. The trustees consider that these activities, summarised below, provide benefit both to those who uses our community centre and the wider community of Morden and neighbouring cities.**

Morden Education & Cultural Centre is a charity committed to the educational support and providing free complementary education programs for people in Morden area. We champion and serve the primary goal advancing the education of the public in the subjects of English Language, Life in the UK and several ethnic languages.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

The supplementary educational support out of school hours which is provided by our community members and teachers on a voluntary basis act as crucial information and advocacy points for adults as well as children in our region. The language courses we provide are designed to improve the level of English of those who struggle to communicate and educate. Our programs aim for raising aspirations and engagement that are essential components to remove the language barrier hence reducing failures in the classroom or at work.

Morden Education & Cultural Centre will focus primarily on young people with the aim of advancing community development through language and cultural education.

## **Our Purposes:**

Morden Education & Cultural Centre is being established to provide supplementary education, place and materials in Morden area for young people who are struggling in formal education due to language barrier, tradition etc.

We provide the following:

_**Language courses**_ **:** The Morden area has accommodated a large number of Turkish speaking people who have moved in the area in the last two years. We have been funded to run a three-year project to provide English language classes for these new residents to enable them to settle and integrate more easily into the local community. We focus on developing language skills of young people who needs additional support in language skills. The language courses we provide are designed to improve the level of English of young people who struggle to communicate and educate. At present many families have shown interest in this scheme and all have made considerable progress in obtaining a functional understanding and use of English in day-to-day situations.

_**Homework support**_ **:** Some young people need support due to falling behind in their studies. Our volunteer teachers provide homework support and materials to those who are in need of supplementary study support.

_**Hall and Rooms**_ **:** Our hall and meeting rooms are available for use by local groups and organisations. This year alone the facilities have been used by groups as varied as the local karate club and the local chess club. Local charities are encouraged to make use of our meeting rooms, and we host surgeries with both local Councillors and the MP for Morden. When facilities are not required for community use they are available for hire on commercial terms. This year alone our facilities have been used on over 100 occasions and over 20 groups, or organisations have benefited from the facilities we can offer the local community.

## **Our Aim to:**

- Raise the attainment of people, particularly those facing disadvantages

- Develop their essential skills

- Prepare young people for the world of work and further study

We do this by following:

- Commitment and inspiring pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and instill a sense of hope in the future.

- Responsibility and empowering young people in establishing goals and following through on commitments.

- Possibility of expanding the perspective of young people to make them aware of their competences.

Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Volunteers are an important resource in community work. This year our Charity has achieved to reach over 600 Turkish speaking people in Morden and surrounding cities. This helped us increase our number of volunteers who then helped us organise and conduct more charitable and fund-raising activities than last year. Volunteers are involved in most of our community activities and we have now over 30 people regularly giving their time. Our language course and homework support sessions have proved to be very successful as we witnessed considerable improvements on some of the students who did not do well in the previous years. We also promoted and supported the right of parents to home educate their children as an additional support to sustain success of their children.
