Trustees Annual Report for the Period 1[st] July 2020 to 30[th] June 2021
The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the consolidated financial statements for the twelve (12) months period ending 30[th] June 2021
operated Charity Commission guidance.
INTRODUCTION - Chair of Trustees
ch has been both applicable and inverted in the past year. COVID-19 restrictions continued and tightened during 2020/21with the result that very little normal Lionistic activity could take place and the population locally and nationally suffered considerable hardship and tragedy. Lockdown may have created boring times rather than interesting times but misery was never far away.
As always, as Chair of Trustees, I thank all of my fellow trustees, officers of the club, members and their families for their support and commitment to both Lions and the wider community over a very challenging year. I am also pleased to say that this thanks has been repeated many times by members of the public and community leaders who have recognised the valuable contribution the Lions have made during a very difficult period. . It must be remembered that trustees and members are all unpai community.
Tim Ritson, Chair of Trustees
It was up to Wetherby Lion members to examine how they could contribute to helping the community endure and survive the pandemic. Led by the Town Council, the Lions joined forces with other local church and voluntary groups in creating a robust system to ensure support could be delivered to those most in need. Christmas festivities were virtually cancelled. Until a suitable vaccine could be developed the only options appeared to be lockdown and continued isolation.
Although the Senior Citizens Christmas Party could not go ahead due to COVID-19 restrictions,
sleigh did still visit the neighbourhood in what proved to be a very successful and well received attempt to raise spirits over the less than festive season. In addition, as Santa was unable to visit local schools, Lion members organised video conference calls to allow pupils to see and talk to him. A competition preceded the event in which pupils were invited to name the reindeer towing the sleigh around Wetherby; the winning entries receiving prizes donated by supermarket Morrisons and local chocolates distributor, Bon Bons.
Once the COVID-19 vaccination serum became available, those Lion members who were able to volunteered their services at the local vaccination centre. shelter from the elements and wheelchairs loaned by ourselves were used to transport less mobile members from the car park to the clinic. Ultimately, nearly 14,000 vaccinations were given.
I am proud to say that where there was a need, there was a Lion .
Requests for support from the Lions Club continue to be scrutinised by the designated committee and those community projects, apart from COVID-19 related, supported in the past year include assisting with the refurbishment of a local playground and planting trees as part of the climate change initiative.
General membership has remained stable with several members of the public expressing interest in joining Wetherby Lions. Unfortunately due to the enforced lack of activity their interest has waned but it is hoped that once lockdown is eased we can commence an effective recruitment campaign

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit
In accordance with the Charities Act 2006, Wetherby District Lions Club (CIO) is required to confirm that the activities it undertakes to achieve its objectives are all carried out for the public benefit as described by the Charity Commission. In shaping these objectives for the past twelve months trustees have attended as many community events as resources allowed.
Due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19, this year has seen the cancellation of our major fundraising events. Whilst fully complying with the COVID restrictions, the club was able to operate sleigh rides in Wetherby and the neighbouring village of Linton bringing a great deal of good cheer to everyone and providing much needed income which was enhanced by further donations from the public.
Additionally the following activities were able to go ahead:
;
providing shelter and wheelchairs at the local COVID-19 Vaccination Hub together with car park marshalling.
Charitable funds that Club members have raised are disbursed to charities, groups and individual beneficiaries in the local, national and international community

Alert and Cash for Kids. A sizeable donation was made to Yorkshire Air Ambulance making the total donated over the last decade to over £37,000.
The Club has continued to target grants to the local community, donating to service organisations and active community groups (Wetherby Weir Preservation Society, Wetherby Arts Festival, Salvation Army, Wetherby Foodbank, Deepdale Community Centre, Wetherby Bandstand Trust) and local youth groups (boys and girls football and cricket clubs, Brownie and Scouts packs and primary schools). A significant grant was made to local carers in the form of meal vouchers so that they could relax a while with or away from their loved ones during the COVID-19 crisis.
Also supported are Lions linked projects as: Yorkshire Flood Appeal, regional holiday schemes and elderly peoples festive meals. Members gave service time and a grant to Wetherby in Bloom and a local youth enterprise scheme.
A number of national/international charities were assisted such as Royal British Legion; Heart Research UK, Water Aid and Lions International Foundation.
Section D Achievements and performance
The last twelve months has seen a reduction in the monies raised from annual events, due to the cancellation of these through the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The cancellation of
and the associated loss of the income, has impacted significantly on the funding for many local and international charities as well as loss of support to the charity work of other Lions Clubs in the Yorkshire Region. However, this was off-set by a significant donation from Leeds City Council COVID-19 fund which we used to support Foodbank Hampers and meal voucher for family careers.
The charity continued to use online as part of the portfolio with the use of Virgin Money Giving online facilities. This scheme, together with direct application to HMRC for fundraising activities, has enabled Gift Aid to be claimed which has increased fundraising efforts by £873.01.

Additionally, the publicity and encouragement of our members and supporters to use our online shopping donation schemes also increased funds.
The Club continued to develop the website and social networking sites to publicise fundraising and charitable giving efforts. Commercial companies of Morrisons Supermarket, Manning Stainton Estate Agents and Franks Accountants have all provided support from their staff; indeed they have been a welcome resource attending at our community events.
Performance Review
During the year s
quality of delivery. Trustees used the Charity Governance Code' Internal Financial Controls documentation as a basis to undertake the reviews.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
The policy on reserves is not to hold a specific reserve fund and to husband its resources so that the Club is able to respond to requests for assistance as appropriate. Should a request of significance be received, which cannot be met from immediate Club funds, members will apply for emergency funds from LCIF; Structure - Governance and Management Wider Networks refers. There are no significant legal or infrastructure obligations in the event that the charity needed to close.
resulting in a lower funds being available to the Club; charitable grant giving has reduced accordingly and is expected to continue in the short term.
Trustees are constantly reviewing the skills of Trustees and regularly seek additional trustees from the organisation s members and community representatives and will continue to do so in the coming year.
Trustees have been conscious of the significant year-end balances in the former charity trust over the past years and have again worked hard to reduce this level during the year and achieved a reduction; see chart below.

Trustees set an objective of holding a £10,000.00 year-end balance, this has not been achieved, however it is heading in the right direction of travel.
Recognising the above position, trustees have endeavoured to maximise the situation without adopting a high risk investment strategy and have continued with a savings account with the Monmouth Building Society. Whilst the income from this account is currently small with interest rates at 0.5% per annum, it does realise a small income on the £16,536.48 currently deposited in the account.
Risk management
The trustees have considered the risks affecting the charity and its activities as part of its planning process and have concluded that there is little to no exposure to direct financial risk as there are few specific liabilities to managing the Club, particularly on the closure of the charity. They have recognised however the economic downturn on charitable giving which has sharpened in the period

THE YEAR AHEAD
The charity will continue to support the people of Wetherby and the surrounding area by helping individuals and organisations in time of need as the Club has done for the last 55 years. Specifically trustees will:
-
consider the impact of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic outbreak on the operation of the charity in respect of the fundraising activities and membership retention and recruitment;
-
review, before the end of the 2021 calendar year, the events that have been staged in the period and those that had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and determine if these events should be repeated in the next financial year;
-
continue to focus fundraising efforts within the local area and to incorporate conurbations outside of Wetherby; namely the town of Tadcaster and the villages of Boston Spa, Bardsey and Scarcroft;
-
continue to manage events with a multi-disciplinary community team;
-
strive to increase membership by an organised professional approach showing due diligence and transparency throughout the process; particularly addressing membership diversity;
-
develop further the use of social media to educate, inform and publicise the charity and its activities and ensure that all opportunities for the publicity and promotion of our services are maximised;
-
continue our assessment of our charity against the Charity Governance Code for Small Charities , ensuring the high standards of governance which forms part of the principles and recommended practices are met;
-
work towards diversity of the board of trustees and recruit new trustees with relevant skills and qualities.
