2024 REPORT FOR THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF THE PARISH OF ST ANNE
TURTON
Alms and Pury)oses
St Anne Turton Parothial Churth Counryl (PCC) has the responsibilty of ccmjperatrng ￿th the
incumbent in promoting in the eccle￿asticaI parish. the mission of the Churth, pastoral,
èvangelislic. soaal and ec￿menIcal.
Following the untimety death of our Team Redor Revd Canon Peter Reiss in Febwary 2024 the
parish relied heavily on the ministerial support of dergy from our Team and Mission Community
retired clergy wrth perrnission to officiate and the viider tliocese. We are d8eply grateful to Revd
Canon Midwel Arundel Revd Marcus Bulo)d( Revd Stephen Greenhalgh Revd Jullan Hartley
and Revd Hannah Lane Revd Simon Ccxjk {Area Dean of Bolton ) and Ven Dr Rachel Mann (
Archdeacon of Bolton and Salfc*d) for all their ￿re, SUPPOrt and help in so many many ways
during the interregnum.
Objectives and Actlvltles
The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our two thurthes,
the parish church of St Anne ( St Anne) and Sl James Mission Church {Sl James) and to
become part of our parish communty. The PCC maintsins an oveThiew of worship throughout
the parish and tries to tsik)r the church services to meet the various styles ￿ churchmanship in
the community. Our services and worship put faith into Fractice through pray8r and scripture
rnusic and sacrament.
When planning actiwties we try to enable people to live out their faith as part of our parish
community through:
Worship and prayer
Provision of pastoral care for parishioners
Missionary and outreach work
To facilitate this wwk it is imp(Ktant that we rnaintaln the fabric of our thurth buildings.
Achlevements and Perfomi•nce
Key examples are:
Flnanc8
2023 saw the parish facing a sTrgnfficant financial deficat and struggling to meet its
obligations of maint6nanc* and parish share. The Diocesan Board of Finance
séts the 18vels of parish share for each parish to help cover the costs of the
dergy in the diocesev their stipends, housing Dxts. insurance and pension
¢(￿trIbutIonS and as a parish we very much Want￿ to be able to fully pay our
share. Following renegotiation with the Diocesan Board of Finance our 2024
parish giving was reduced to £36,rJ)O which we were then able to pay in full.
Maintenance repairs and improvements lo our thurthyard and churth buildings.
The Saturday moming volunteer gardening team at St Anne keep the thurthyard
grounds in superb order. Their hard w(x* tyovides muth pastoral comfort for

those bisiling loved ones tho are buried or Inte￿ed there or seeking a place of
refiection and cyJntemtAalion.
The major repairs to St Anne (x)mprising refurbishment of lyd)gates. chx*
maintenance works and upgrade of stained glass windows have finally beén
completed and plans are afoot to repgir the organ and enlarge Me of the
memorial gard8ns to incfease tspa(ity for future intennents.

Increased user of our thurch t￿lIdIng$ by the communty
Successful (*urch fundraising events in our church buildings, the 100 Club Lottery and

It was espectally pleasing to see the attendance of the unrfomied organisalions

The Tuesday Family Friendly Service at St James is tsik)red to families with

thanks to the dedication of Revd Marws and Karen Bulwck and suppjrt from Jo

We Work closely *ryth the school and headieather Craig Wheatley and appoint

very well attended
Wornhlp and Prayer
The PCC is keen to offer a range of services durir¥J the week and over Ihe course of the year
that our communty finds beneficial in addition to regular Sunday sep4irM. For example, we
hold Tuesday earty evening interactive Family Friend￿ Services at St James vthere thlklren are
encouraged to take part and lead in worship and a Wednesday moming Book of Common
Prayer Holy Communion ser4ice at St Anne.
As well as our regular services we enab￿ our ccKnrnunity to celebrate and thank God at those
significant milest￿eS in lrfe. Through bapttsm we thank God for the gtft of1rf8, in marriage public
vows are exchanged ¥Mth God's blessing and Ihrwgh lunerdl serwces family and friends
express their grief and give thanks for the lrfe *thich is complete in this World and to
commend the person irrto G(NJ's keeping. In 2024 w8 celebrated 8 baptisms, 4 weddings and
held 18 funerals

Deanery Synod
At present we have two elected deanery Syn￿ membets. (￿r parish elecxcfal roll figures have
declined and with completion of the new 2025 electoral roll ncw stand at 95. This means thal we
fall Into th8 dectoral roll band of 75 to 125 under the ￿rrent Di(Kesan Board of Financ8
scheme of repreSentsti￿ and are entitled to have three deanery S￿1)1 mernbers, not four. We
hope to fill the Current vacancy at the 2025 Annual Parochial Church Me8ting. Deanery Synod
pmvides th8 PCC wtth an imFrfxtsnt link b8iw8en the parish and the wder structures and
slrat8gies of th8 Church.
Communlty and So¢lal Use of Our Church Bulldlngs
At Sl Anne the Broadhead Room is the weekiy meeting for the Mother and Toddler grwp
and the morrthty meeting place for the Mothers Union. Ncmth Turton Parish Council holds regular
quarterty meetings there too.
The building at St James is used V•idely by a range of communty gn)ups e.g. Brownies. dan
and frtness groups and ad hoc hirings for birthday parties, craft fairs and other celebrations and
events.
In 2024 very enjoyable and well attended so(aal fundraising events were:
pasty and peas supw evening hekj in the parish hall at St James in April wtth
fascinating and insightful presentstions the June 1996 Manth8St8r City Centre

music performed by opera singer Nicola Mills. The churth was beaulifully decorated by
Friends of Turton Tower and thurth volunteers and the perfect setbng for Nicola Mills
excellent p8rt￿ance showcased the building's wonderful acoustics. We hope to
open the thurch to more musical events in the coming years.
The PCC has very much appreriated the inveased incryne generated by these hirlngs and
fundraising events and hopes that by facilitating a vram v￿Come into our church buildings we
can encourage more use and a doser relati(￿ship ¥￿1h the pariShic￿er$ we serve.

a small increase in regular giving, hirings have (loubled and the 100 Club Lottery and

fijndralslng acbwlies have also welded welcome increases in income. Th6r8 has been huge
expenditure in repairs to churth ￿lIdingS wilh hopefiJlly fewer repair5 needed in the fuiure. Heat
light and maintenance remain high but have not incseased and the renegotiation of parish share
down to £36,000 from £51.969 has resufted in a year end net income surplus of £10,737 instead
of the previous year's loss of £31.280. Electronic wcffking has greatty 8SSlSted in the preparation
of th8 accounts but ther8 ar8 too many small accounts and the independent examiner advised
that the PCC shoukl close most of these and consolidate.
The examined approved financial ststements provide full details.
Safeguardlng
The PCC has complied with the duty under sectim 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Disciplin8
