| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | NWTCA is a charitable, cultural, educational non-profit organisation dedicated to increase, promote, foster friendship, public knowledge and understanding of the Turkish culture and language. NWTCA organises community events and activities where people of all ages and nationalities can come together to experience Turkish culture through Turkish music, festivals, dance, food and art. NWTCA plays an integral role in bringing the Turkish-British community together in the Northwest of England. One of the main services we offer is "community language teaching" of Turkish for children and adults. This has enabled us to offer a wider range of classes and activities for people of Turkish origin or people with some kind of Turkish |
connection. Some children who have attended our classes could not previously speak a word of Turkish, now they have mastered the basics and have a sense of their culture and background-our weekend sessions are particularly valued by single parents whose children live with primary carers with no knowledge of Turkish. As children move through study modules and pass progress tests included in the materials, they develop a sense of academic achievement & personal achievement independent of more formal language learning. The Turkish lessons we provide, also serve as a social hub for the Turkish community as we have a waiting area for parents to socialise when they wait for their children. We began the new academic year on - 09/10/22 and our weekly lessons started online due to Covid restrictions. We had in person classes once a month. We clearly see the advancement in our student’s learning of Turkish language and culture. The students build strong friendships and take part in our friendly art and writing contests. We have supported our students and their families by continuing with Turkish lessons and making the online lessons for free of charge. The children kept their cameras off during the lessons and the lessons have not been recorded to stay in line with Data protection regulations. Children and adults develop a sense of citizenship, not only as part of discovering their Turkish identity but also as a result of finding a valued place as a bicultural individual within an inclusive British society. Our volunteers developed skillsets that helped them to raise their employability and boosted their confidence.
- 10/10/22 NWTCA Folk Dance classes for women and children started for the new academic year (all year) We have had great interest from our community. These lessons are growing in number and students learn different regional folk dances introduced and the dance group performances were a great success at different events, and we hope to carry on and grow this activity going forward. The children love a part of their culture which are fold dances, help them with their identity and belonging. We have received great feedback from our students. - 29/10/22 Republic Day Ball at the Midland Hotel Celebrated the Republic Day, in a prestigious venue, 150 Turkish-British people came together, the event jointly created with community, couples danced waltz, where the women showcased a folk dance from the Black Sea region. Lord Mayor attended our event. It’s been a great fundraising event. - 24/04/22 6[th] NWTCA Children’s Festival at Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel On this day, we celebrate the children of the world, and their achievement, the children prepared poems, songs, and dances, the community came together to celebrate this special national day. - 05/02/2023 Turkish Classical Music Choir has been set up with conductor Suat Sancar. The rehearsals are on Sundays. Helping community members with this creative activity, improving their mental health, helping people to feel included and not isolated. The participants are able to continue engaging with their culture through the arts which helps them to feel better in themselves. - 07/02/23 Turkish Earthquake Relief Campaign started. Earthquake happened in Turkiye and most of our friends lost their family members. We wanted to contribute and help the people who are affected in Turkiye. With the help of Manchester Turkish Consulate and Turkish Airlines, we collected and sent 5700 boxes of
necessary aid items to the area. The wider community helped us to collect the aid items. We are extremely grateful. - 04/03/2023 - MACFEST & Muslim Women’s Art festival - Folk dance performance (Lament and Sama) After the earthquake - 08/03/23 8th March International Women’s Day- and Fundraising event for the Turkish Earthquake Victims.
