## **Stanhope Community Association Annual Report 2020**

It was a strange year. The first three months were as busy as ever with our usual groups and classes and whist drives, even though the weather does affect our attendance numbers over the winter period.

Then came lockdown and we had to close everything.

We decided to have the garage area improved for the Garage Sales. This included a new ceiling, flooring and inner doorway installed, also new electrics for lighting and heating. This means we now have a bright fresh room which is more attractive for the customers and more pleasant for the staff. It has certainly improved our footfall and takings.

In September, when we could open again with social distancing restriction wearing of masks, hand sanitising etc. we opened the Garage Sale again and it was well received by the public. We offered space to Crafters to display and sell their goods for them, taking a commission on their sales.

A few of our groups came back with reduced numbers as many of our users were shielding or very wary of mixing again. We were grateful for the income from the Garage Sale.

We also put items on ebay to help with costs and overheads.

We had agreed to have another section of the pointing done on the building (we are doing it over a four year period due to the cost). This was the front of the building this time and we had scaffolding all the way along on the public footpath. As it was lockdown the path was not so busy so we didn’t cause as much inconvenience as it would have done normally.

We also had a leaking roof problem which the Insurance Company would not cover – they said it was “wear and tear” due to the age of the building. We had quite extensive repairs done but the inside work has to wait until the walls dry out.

We were fortunate to receive funding from Council/Government and also from County Durham Community Foundation in the form of grants to assist with core costs – i.e. overheads and repairs and maintenance.

We look forward to getting back to welcoming groups and classes again once social distancing, masks and other restrictions are lifted.
