## **REPORTS**

## **VICAR’S REPORT**

This has been a year of transition, and I am writing this report in the week of my 6-month review with Bishop Emma. In these early months, the parish has come to feel like home, and I would like to thank everyone for making us feel so welcome.

At my installation I thanked Rob and Fleur, our wardens and parish reps, and Lucy, the parish administrator, for their hard work during the interregnum. I would like to repeat that vote of thanks here and extend it to all members of the PCC, as I have continued to settle into the shape and pattern of ministry here in Twickenham.

In the first year of any post, one is encouraged to engage in a process of “deep listening” whereby the strengths and opportunities of a parish community may be discerned. This is something you try to do before you lose the sheen, and objectivity, of being “the new vicar.” I have applied myself to this task of discernment, and it is obvious that Holy Trinity means so much to so many in the community, not just those who worship with us on Sunday.

During this process of listening, I have not rushed to introduce change for change’s sake, though of course some early adjustment is inevitable. As concerns our public acts of worship, we have been able introduce a more settled pattern of services, reflective of the fact we are no longer a church in interregnum. We have reintroduced the Old Testament reading and are beginning to use the screens more in the 10:30 service. I am grateful to Katy Patterson, Vicki Rogers, and all our children’s volunteers who give of their time and talents to ensure there is some form of children’s provision every Sunday during term. We all gathered for an enjoyable social in February, and I am pleased to report the vicar’s cheese bar was a welcome innovation. Please do pray for our youth work. We are gradually rebuilding our work with teenagers. We currently have a youth social on the 4th Sunday of each month, and the small group is already beginning to gel.

It is important to finish this period of discernment before we articulate, more formally, our shared sense of vision. Nonetheless, some themes are already beginning to crystallize in my thinking and praying.

There is an appetite at Holy Trinity to reach out into the community; but I sense our confidence has been eroded somewhat by the pandemic. Our efforts to reshape our services in a gradual way - incorporating greater liturgical variety, choice of sermon series – has been deliberately directed at addressing this issue. Rebuilding our confidence and joy in the gospel, will make our outreach and evangelism all the more effective.

I would like to thank our Licensed Lay Minister Anna McPherson, and our preaching team who have risen to this challenge, inspiring and encouraging us through their faithful ministry of the Word. I am delighted to inform you that Anna Couper, who trained as an LLM in the diocese of Rochester, is about to complete the transfer process, and will be joining us formally as another Lay Minister here at Holy Trintiy.

In the year ahead, we will continue to build a culture of encouragement and confidence, as we move out of the shadow of the pandemic into this new and different chapter. As the Lord spoke through the prophet Jeremiah:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jer. 29:11)

_Reverend Simon Couper_

## **ELECTORAL ROLL AND CHURCH ATTENDANCE**

Each parish creates an Electoral Roll and membership of it gives you voting rights at the APCM. But it is also a statement that you belong to the Holy Trintiy church family.

The Electoral Roll of the church increased by 4 from 262 at the time of the APCM in 2023 to 266 in 2024. The official figure for this year consists of 1 removal and 5 new additions. The Electoral Rolls are renewed every six years. This year is the final year of Electoral Roll revisions since the current roll started in 2019. A new roll will be prepared again in 2025.

Our official figure for those on the Electoral Roll eligible to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting is 266.

In the chart below you can see the roll numbers for the last 10 years.

By the end of 2023, we saw an encouraging increase in the average weekly attendance at services, for both adults and children, and look forward to building on this in 2024. The chart below shows the average attendance figures for the past 10 years.

## **CHARITABLE GIVING**

The aim of charitable giving at Holy Trinity is to enable us to come together as a church family to support charities working with those in need, and which operate at each of three levels: local, national and international.

Our Harvest Festival in October was in support of Spear, A Rocha and the Richmond Foodbank based at the Vineyard Church/Community Centre. Our church and Archdeacon Cambridge’s C of E Primary School donated non-perishable food stuffs to which coins were taped. The cash donation of £604.07 was shared between Spear and A Rocha, while the Richmond Foodbank received the food.

The Gift Service before Christmas was again in support of a local refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence. The refuge was absolutely delighted with the gifts and toiletries for women they received, and we hope to support them again this Christmas. We also extended our collection this year and requested special Christmas foods and advent calendars for the Richmond Foodbank within this service.

Nationally, we continued to support the Children's Society, a charity helping children facing danger, discrimination or disadvantage, with a special collection at our Christingle Service in December. Thanks to Vicki Rogers and everyone who helped organise this busy event.

At the international level, we supported Christian Aid, with our Christian Aid collection in May which raised £130.20.

There was one additional special event in 2023, as we welcomed our new vicar with a Collation and Induction service in October led by The Bishop of Kensington – The Right Revered Dr Emma Inneson. A retiring collection at this service was for the Bishop of Kensington’s Discretionary Fund, helping churches, clergy and individuals in time of need, professional development or during an interregnum.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our charitable giving over the last year. Your generosity, in terms of your time and your donations, were very much appreciated. We are always looking for more people to get involved - so if you have ideas about new events and/or new charities to support, or would like to help in any other way, talk to a member of the PCC or email events@httchurch.org .

## **CHURCH WARDENS**

This year has been the busiest year for us as church wardens, and although it’s fair to say that we faced the prospect of an interregnum with some trepidation, we have been overwhelmed by the amount of support from the PCC and congregation at Holy Trinity. Firstly everyone came together to give Tim, Nat, Jemima and Tabitha a really good send off and celebration of their time with us as they moved to their new parish in Bishop’s Cleeve, which we know was very much appreciated by them. During the interregnum, we were very grateful for all the help and support with preaching, music arrangements and other essential organisation – special thanks to Lucy our parish administrator who worked tirelessly to support the smooth running of our church. It was a really interesting and rewarding experience to work with Bishop Emma and her team in the recruitment of our new vicar and we very much appreciated all the support and encouragement we received from them.

At Holy Trinity we are blessed with an amazing extended team of people giving their time and talents in so many ways - from running all our services and groups through to taking care of our building and grounds. On behalf of the PCC, we’d like to thank all those who contribute at Holy Trinity - you are amazing and your efforts are hugely appreciated.

We were thrilled to appoint Simon to lead us through the next stage of our lives together at Holy Trinity and it has been wonderful to see how Simon, Anna, Ben and James have been warmly welcomed by our Twickenham Green community and have settled into their new lives here. It’s been lovely to re-introduce our men’s and women’s socials which have been very well attended and have helped us reconnect with old friends as well as get to know the many new faces we now have attending our Sunday services. We are very much looking forward to working with Simon and the PCC to develop our vision for the next few years and to build on all the opportunities we have to grow as a church.

## **CRECHE**

Our numbers in creche for 2023 have been between 1 and 5 babies and toddlers each week. We have continued to love looking after the small group and having fun with them with stories, songs, small world play, dressing up and other age appropriate activities. There are 8 of us who continue to volunteer each month and we hope in 2024 our numbers will continue to grow.

## **DEANERY SYNOD**

The Hampton Deanery, which is part of the Diocese of Kensington within the overall Diocese of London, covers 15 parishes and the Activate Church (up to August 2023). The regular Deanery Synod meetings provide Holy Trinity with an important link to neighbouring parishes and the wider structure of the Church of England.

The Reverend Derek Winterburn was acting Area Dean for the meeting in February 2023: the Reverend Ben Lovell took over as Area Dean in April 2023. Holy Trinity’s Hampton Deanery Synod representatives are Anna McPherson and (since November 2023) Sue Morris and Adam Smith.

The Hampton Deanery Synod held three meetings during 2023:

- The February meeting was held at St James’ Church, Hampton Hill, where the main topic for discussion was Children’s Ministry and the invited speakers were Katie O’Connor (Children’s Ministry Support Worker, Diocese of London) and the Reverend Donna Williams (All Saints Church, Hampton).

- The May meeting was at St Michael’s and St George’s Church, Fulwell, where the main topic was _Reaching out to our Neighbours – models for creative growth_ and the invited speaker was Jonathan Rust (Kensington Area Director of Mission Development).

- The November meeting was at St Richard’s Church, Hanworth where the main topic was Youth Collaboration and the invited speakers were Jo Jones (Bishop’s Youth and Schools Chaplain, Kensington Area) and Jacob Holmes (Leader of the Youth Ministry in Communion, YMiC).

## **ECO CHURCH**

Eco Church is A Rocha UK's award scheme for churches in England and Wales who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God's earth. The following is taken from their website:

‘Our free online survey and supporting resources are designed to equip your church to express your care for God's world in your worship and teaching; in how you look after your buildings and land; in how you engage with your local community and in global campaigns, and in the personal lifestyles of your congregation.

The actions you take will count towards a prestigious Eco Church Award at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Complete our Eco Survey to gauge where your church currently is in relation to the three different levels; you may find you already qualify for an Eco Church Award!

Our vision is for churches of all denominations to care for creation as an integral part of loving their neighbours and following God faithfully.’

We created a small project team, led by our Curate at the time, completed the survey and put a number of issues into practice. As a result, we were awarded Bronze status in 2022. Our plan is to continue this work and some progress was made in 2023. We are planning more activity next year and are looking for a couple more volunteers to join the team.

## _Tim Little_

## **FABRIC**

Our team of volunteers look after the fabric of the church, or arrange for outside contractors to carry out any necessary work. Our planned maintenance schedule is up to date and we use a variety of trusted contractors.

At the end of 2023 the current chair of the Fabric Team stepped down after many years of success so he could focus more on the technical challenges of the Tech Desk. We all thank Giles for his unstinting service. The gap has now been filled and Rob French takes over as chair,

A few other items of interest include:

• Man-hole cover in car park has been replaced

• Our gutter maintenance company made a number of suggestions about repairs, slipped slates etc plus us wanting a foot attached to a downpipe and also some pigeon spikes above the kitchen door. This work is now complete

- New lock for kitchen door has been purchased and fitted

- Fire-fighting equipment has been serviced and two new extinguishers added

- Gas boiler in kitchen has been serviced and safety certificate issued.

- Kitchen smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm have been tested every 2 months

- Vicarage trees have been pruned

• South aisle ceiling damage has been repaired and re-plastered

- Chancel roof water leak repaired

But the biggest item on our agenda is the main church heating boilers. During their safety check it was found that they are rusting and need replacing. We are in the middle of getting quotations for new boilers and expect the bill to be in the region of £25,000 to £30,000.

## **FRIENDSHIP CAFÉ**

The Friendship Café , which is a community outreach project, was launched at the end of January 2024. We aim to provide a warm, welcoming community space in the Green Room on a weekly basis for anyone to come along and enjoy tea, coffee, cakes and chat. We deliberately went for a soft launch with our own congregation, as an initial trial. We have now got both a core group of people attending and a core team of volunteers to run things, and attendance can be up to eight people at the moment.

We are just beginning to publicise the café more widely, on social media, and we are asking doctors surgeries, dentists, local shops and various charities to display our posters, and to signpost people to us. We know that it will take time and patience to grow the café to be a well recognised community resource, but we are committed to the long term and hope that we can fulfil a local need for friendship and support.

## _Liz Rogers_

## **GARDENING CLUB**

The gardening team has enjoyed a really positive year with short, sharp two hour sessions being run periodically on Saturday mornings. In the last year we have run eight sessions which have been fun and sociable and allowed us to balance keeping the gardens presentable with our commitments to nature as an Eco church. Last year we saw blue tits using one of our nest boxes whilst other areas of focus have been improving our composting process and managing the area around the war memorial more effectively. We are currently adding a more biodiverse wildflower area, suited to shade, at the back of the church. We also hope to add additional pollinator friendly plants to the front border.

We welcome team members to both gardening and Eco church teams.

_Paul Butler_

## **MUSIC**

I took over the selection of hymns during last year’s interregnum and have just carried on! Using the growing selection of hymns for on-screen display and record of which we have done recently, we choose hymns for each week which link to the theme or readings as closely as we can, also drawing on the expertise of our compact musician team. We have a rota of musicians: Pat plays organ week 2 and week 5 and the ‘girl band’ with Katy B, Ellie and Beth plays week 4. Simon has also offered to play piano. The remaining weeks are recorded music. Our aim is to have live music every week and we regularly put out requests for new musicians to join the team. It has been an ongoing concern and securing people for a regular monthly slot seems to be a challenge. We are trying to involve members of the Trinity Singers to lead the singing each week. After Pat stood down last year as conductor, we welcomed Lukas who led the Trinity Singers in our Christmas Carol concert which also incorporated the Archdeacon School Choir for the first time, led by Alice Dallosso.

## **NOISY CHURCH**

Noisy Church runs on a Sunday afternoon on the third Sunday of each month and is now in its third year. The idea came from a suggestion by a parent at a PCC meeting expressing the frustration of wanting children to have some access to Church but finding the Sunday mornings impossible to manage with increasing weekend commitments. Our Noisy Church service hopes to encourage in families that may not be able to attend Sunday morning services or who want their children to attend a completely child orientated service. It is run by Vicki and a guest host and Simon helps us out too. The session consists of songs, games and craft, as well as a Bible theme, reading and prayer. We started with about 12 children

8

and now cater for up to 45. It is joyful to see a lot of regular attendees and each month we welcome a few new faces. It’s a fun service to be a part of.

_Vicki Rogers_

## **PCC**

The PCC or Parochial Church Council is the governing body of Holy Trinity. It is made up of elected members and ex-officio members. The following rules apply to the make-up of the PCC.

- The Vicar of our church

- A Curate licenced to our church

- Our two Churchwardens

- Our Deanery Synod representatives [we are allowed up to 4]

- Members of the laity depending on the size of the electoral roll o 201 to 300 – 15 members

We currently have a total of 15 members, so there are still some spaces. All laity members stand down each year and may put themselves up for re-election at the APCM. Meetings are held every other month starting in January and agendas and minutes are available to view on our website. Although the vicar is the chair of the PCC, at the meetings we take it in turn to act as chair as this adds a welcome variety to the meetings.

The only change to the make up of the PCC during 2023 was that Simon Couper became our vicar and thus the chair of the PCC.

Current members of the PCC are: Fleur Beeson, Churchwarden Jon Beeson, Treasurer Simon Couper, Vicar Rob French, Churchwarden Tim Little, PCC Secretary Anna McPherson, Licenced Lay Minister & Deanery Synod Rep Sue Morris, Deanery Synod Rep Geoff Mussett Gordon Nockles Giles Norman Katy Patterson Liz Rogers Adam Smith, Deanery Synod Rep Tamsin Turner

Safeguarding is a standing item on every agenda and all members of the PCC have undertaken safeguarding training to guide them in taking action to ensure children, young people and vulnerable adults do not come to any harm in our church and the activities it delivers. The PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016, in relation to having due regard to House of Bishops’ guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. Lucy James, our Church Safeguarding Officer, and Tim Little (Recruiter) work together to ensure our safeguarding responsibilities are met.

## **SUNDAY SCHOOL**

I have now been leading the Sunday School Team at Holy Trinity for over 15 years. Our leaders and helpers continue to inspire me with their tireless enthusiasm and loyalty, and thanks go to them for all they do to make our Sunday School a success.

The children’s Sunday School groups currently cater for children aged from 3 years up to 11 years, who are grouped into 3 age groups arranged around school year groups. We have a steady base attendance with varying numbers from occasional attendees.

Our leaders and helpers all work on a volunteer basis and we currently have 13 team members leading and helping at the sessions. We hold sessions on weeks 1, 2 and 4 of each month and do not operate during the school holidays.

Termly themes covered over the last year include: Jesus’ early life and ministry, Peacemakers and Daniel.

We are always happy to welcome new team members, and you can contact me on sslead@httchurch.org if you are interested in joining the team or speak to me after a Sunday service.

## _Katy Patterson_

## **SUPPERS WITH LOVE**

Suppers with Love is our service for families who are in need in our local community. People who have benefitted from meals include: families with a new baby, people facing illness or after an operation. We currently have 15 cooks on our list and we are looking for some more. There is no pressure to cook each time, just whenever you are able to. This year so far we have cooked for 2 families but we are keen to increase this in order to help as many people as we can. If you know anyone who would benefit from the meals, or would like to be added to the list of cooks, please email Joanne Butler at swl@httchurch.org or speak to me after a service.

_Joanne Butler_

## **TECH TEAM**

Since the start of live streaming services, just over 3 years ago, the Tech Team have broadcast over 175 services - we have come a very long way since then! At the start of 2023, we have switched to displaying all the hymns on screens and are now starting to show the Orders of Service on the screens, too, in preparation for moving away from the Service cards completely to permit a more flexible and varied service. We have also recently implemented a new PA system in the Green Room that can be used for room hirers and for church events.

Our current project is to complete the enablement of On-Screen Orders of Service, involving installing additional screens which can be seen in the Chancel and from the Altar, which will allow Communion Services to be run. We are starting to plan for an upgrade to the camera system so that the cameras can track and zoom in on different areas such as the Altar, Pulpit, Lectern, etc to follow the Service Leaders.

Operating the Tech Desk equipment to support the services is a small, dedicated team: Giles, Rob, Nathan, Brian & Miriam, joined at the start of the year by Rory & Alex, who started as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award, but have stayed with the team, although we are always looking for more volunteers, particularly to cover the 9am services.

## **TRINITY TODDLERS**

Trinity Toddlers has continued to offer fellowship and play to carers and toddlers, with numbers starting to return to those experienced pre pandemic. In 2023 we averaged over 30 toddlers and babies attending with the parents/carers every Monday morning during term time. The singing and dancing, as well as hearing a Bible story, each week is well received by all who attend. The ‘Wiggle’ dance is a particular favourite. The positive relations built in the Trinity Toddlers sessions extend into the community, with regular chats with the toddlers on the Green on my way to and from work.

My thanks go to Jo Butler and Christine Elderfield for their loyal support in helping with the set up, clearing, tea duties, holding of babies and most importantly in making everyone feel very welcome and cared for. Their help and support of the group is invaluable in making Trinity Toddlers the success it is. We are always happy to welcome extra helpers to this fun and vibrant group so please email me at ttlead@httchurh.org if you can help with craft or hospitality at any of our sessions.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

The Parochial Church Council is a corporate body established by the Church of England. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The PCC is exempted by order from registering with the Charity Commission. All regular church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and to consider election to the PCC.

## **Objectives and Activities**

The PCC of Holy Trinity Church works with the incumbent to promote the mission of the Church within the parish of Holy Trinity, Twickenham (traditionally known as the parish of Twickenham Common). This Mission is outlined in the church’s Mission Action Plan. It is also responsible for the maintenance of the church fabric. Close links are maintained with Archdeacon Cambridge's Primary School, situated within the parish. Cooperation with other local churches is actively encouraged.

## **Parochial Church Council of Holy Trinity Church, Twickenham Green**

## **ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023**

## **Financial Review**

_The church now reports its financial results on the same basis as most company accounts - the "accruals" basis. This attempts to reflect the activity that happened in the year, rather than simply what flowed through the bank account between 1[st] January and 31[st] December._

In 2023, our income was £4,084 lower than in 2022. This decreased income was mainly due to the planned giving and income from church activities (e.g. events) both being lower than in 2022. Room hire income (£3,123 increase) and interest on our savings (£9,190 increase) were both significantly more than in 2022.

Expenditure was £6,920 higher than in 2022. This increase was due to the increased common fund payment to the Diocese (£6,800 increase) and much higher utilities costs (£9,800 increase). The sum of all other church expenditure was lower than the previous year.

The church paid its full parish share to the Diocese of London, and this remains the biggest item of expenditure at £92,000. This is the amount we pay to the Diocese of London to cover the cost of a vicar, accommodation, training and support, plus continued investment and training in the wider Anglican church. In 2024 the church will be paying its full parish share.

At the end of December 2023, we had £280,920 in our bank and investment accounts. This was lower than the £300,119 figure at the same time in 2022. This decrease is due to the deficit made throughout 2023.

Many thanks for your continued support to the church.

_Jon Beeson, Honorary Treasurer._

## **Reserves Policy**

It is PCC policy to maintain a balance on the general fund (if possible) which equates to approximately six months’ unrestricted payments, to cover emergency situations that may arise from time to time. The balance of £280,920 exceeds this level.

It is our policy to invest our funds mainly with the Church of England Deposit Fund, with a working level maintained in our current account.

## **Approved by the PCC on 13[th] March 2024 and signed on their behalf by Reverend Simon Couper (PCC Chairman) and Mr Jon Beeson (PCC Treasurer).**

## **Independent examiner’s report to the PCC of Holy Trinity Church, Twickenham**

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Members/Trustees of Holy Trinity Church, Twickenham, Parochial Church Council.**

I report on the accounts of the church for the year ended 31[st] December 2023, which are set out on the two pages Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31 December 2023 and the one page Notes to the statements.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The church’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The church's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act);

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity

- Commissioners (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements

- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the

- accounting requirements of the 2011Act have not been met; or

- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
