CHAIR’S REPORT

The 2020/2021 season is one that will hopefully be unique in the club’s history, due to the covid-19 pandemic which saw us unable to get on court to practice or compete for much of the time.

That said, we have continued to use the time well, planning for the future, supporting our members, and ensuring we stayed connected and supportive. Not only that but we managed to deliver around 50% of all training sessions across all groups despite the challenges of Tier 1, 2 and 3 covid status locally through the autumn, and the paralysis of lockdown in the early months of 2021.

Thanks to the hard work of our Trustee and now covid-19 office Richard Guest we developed a reputation in the sport for our diligence around keeping members safe, being contacted by other clubs that wanted to use our guidance aligned with that from Volleyball England. Most importantly though, we sustained high standards in all our sessions and managed to stay free of being part of a covid-19 outbreak much to our relief.

The senior teams sadly got no competitive volleyball at all this season, and those members must be congratulated and recognised for their patience, and obvious love of the sport and loyalty to the club as we have lost very few people.

We have worked incredibly hard to get as many of our junior teams back on the court as possible and did so securing girls’ and boys’ fixtures through work with neighbouring clubs of a similar philosophy and level of play for all junior age groups. Our coaching team worked incredibly hard to make this happen, and it is testament to their sense of belonging, identity and duty that they did so, often on back-to-back weekends home and away.

As part of this, Volleyball England ran the ‘2020’ National u15s last 8s competition a year late – and our girls’ and boys’ teams attended. The girls secured 5[th] place overall ranking and it was a memorable day for the boys who reached the final losing to Boswells of Chelmsford, Essex – in a repeat of the final that took place in 2005!

Our plans towards our 50[th] anniversary in 2030 are full steam ahead with immediate progress made:

So… a season of ups and downs. We had already had to cancel our 40[th] celebrations in 2020 and had to do the same with the replacement 41[st] this summer… and we missed nearly all matches and lots of time on court. BUT…
