Bournemouth Lifeguard Corps: Charity 1166158 Charity Commission Report 2022

We have come to the end of another year and once again the Corps has grown in strength. We have provided both pool and beach lifeguard training for our Rookies, Cadets and Adult members. Pool training has been consistent as always and it is amazing to see how each of the groups improved their skills, knowledge and fitness through the winter ready for the beach sessions.

Rookies (aged 8-12 years) continue to thrive and have been working hard to achieve various levels of the RLSS UK Rookie programme. We continued to operate small groups’ dry side which worked well, as well as pool training. At the beach, the Rookies were able to improve their board skills in various conditions, including rafting up and changing positions, starts, positioning on the boards and surfing in on them. During one session with sizable waves, we were able to work together as a team performing a “huddle” and show the effects of a strong longshore drift whilst looking after each other.

Eighteen members travelled to Sheffield for the RLSS National Speed Championships, ages ranged from 12 to 64 and 11 of them were competing at a Speeds event for the first time. Some fantastic performances resulted in 8 golds, 1silver, 3 bronze and 16 other top ten finishes. There were 42 personal best times, 12 new club records and 1 British record were set. A team of six cadets competed at the Youth National Surf Championship 2022, held at Branksome Chine, over possibly the only two rainy days in August. They were all competing in a National Beach Competition for the first time and performed fantastically well.

In the middle of October, we took eleven enthusiastic members down to Hayle in Cornwall for a weekend of training with the Inshore Rescue Boats (IRBs). What was meant to be a small gathering of people turned into a mass training weekend with members from all over the South of the UK. Over 50 people attended the weekend with the surf and swell really allowing our crews to hone their skills.

We have been fortunate to have been given two grants from the Hendy Foundation (£4875.00) and ASDA Foundation (£6250.00) to enable us to safely open one end of our HQ on the beach at Joseph Steps, Bournemouth. These works have been undertaken to reinstate the toilet facility and provide new changing rooms, storeroom and a kitchen facility. In addition, disabled access to the ground floor of the building has been enabled via new ramps.

Further grants have been received from the Asda Foundation, the local Free Mason group, which together with fundraising activities undertaken by members and parents through various events have raised considerable sums for the Corps, this year. These included providing help at the Bournemouth Bay Run, the British Heart Foundation Pier to Pier swim, Run Bournemouth and Wessex 4x4, as well as bag packing and the provision of bag packers which has not only aided our club with funds but to also support Asda’s own charity.

As Trustees we would like to thank the Committee for their hard work and continued support for the work they do for the club and to all the trainers who put in countless hours throughout the week to help train others.
