IN 2018 THE RANA TEAM WERE AT THE PAT SHELTER WHEN A GIANT DOG WAS BROUGHT IN. HE HAD JUST BEEN SAVED FROM BEING HUNG FROM A TREE WHERE SOME EVIL MAN WAS TRYING TO KILL HIM. HE WAS QUIET, KIND AND GENTLE WITH THE 100 DOGS HE MET IN THE SHELTER.
John went on to prove what a gentle giant he was when he protected the weaker dogs in the shelter and stoppped dog fights by head butting the agressive dogs out the way. He was overlooked time and time again and we were heart broken that this incredible dog was not finding the love his deserved.
Finally, a wonderful couple who wanted a dog to accompany them on their travels across Europe got in touch. They adopted Johnny and he now lives the life we all dream of! He is perfect with other dogs and has friends across the continent! He has camped next to stunning green lakes, galloped over Swiss Mountains, he has his own little doggy dressing gown and we are told he is the star of the show where ever he goes (even acting as a flower-boy in a wedding!) This dog is a dream, and is now living the dream, and we are so proud of everything we did to help make this happen.

S U K H A
SUKHA BRINGS US ONE OF THE BEST (VISUALLY) BEFORE AND AFTER RESCUE PHOTOS WE HAVE EVER SEEN! THIS GORGEOUS KITTEN WAS RESCUED WITH AN HORRENDOUS EYE INFECTION WHILST LIVING ON THE STREETS OF TUNISIA. PEOPLE WERE WALKING PAST IGNORING HIS WEAK MEOWS FOR HELP. MERIAM, ONE OF OUR WONDERFUL RESCUERS SAVED HIM AND TOOK HIM TO THE VETS FOR EMERGENCY CARE.
Thanks to the support of our RANA followers we were able to cover the cost of his vet bills and through the power of social media Sukha found a home with someone who adores him. Under her special care, where he has been able to receive one on one attention, he has gone from strength to strength and now has the most stunning long flowing fur, and is physically fit and well. He is a credit to every single person who has been involved in his rescue and gives so much love back to his owner. He is one happy cat and we are so pleased yet another blind and black cat is off the streets and in its forever home.
Black cats and cats which are blind, remain the 2 most difficult factors to overcome in animal rescue. Here Sukha shows that both these factors are things to be praised and not to be avoided - we hope other adopters do the same! Black cats are AMAZING!

BRYONY & RONOLD
2 X THE ADOPTION FUN!
We love nothing more than when 2 RANA cats get adopted together. 2 more foster spaces cleared so more can be saved, but also the strong bond some of these cats make when they are healing from trauma, can remain. It is reassuring for them to travel together, to arrive in an unknown home together, and to experience all the love and exciting new things together too. We just love it! It makes everything that much more sweeter!
Ronald + Bryony were both rescued from the streets as tiny, unwanted kittens, just another number, in a collosal amount of street kittens left to die. They are now pets. They are loved and cared for and thanks to RANA supporters donating and sharing their posts, they have a happy life
BEATRIX BLIND CAT
Beatrix is one tough cookie. She lived in a vacant building in down town Tunis. Finding food and surviving, a huge achievement for any cat, but a cat that was totally blind, is a huge credit to how smart she is. Beatrix had many litters of kittens, which sadly died from dogs and other cats attacking them. Finally her rescuer couldn’t see this face looking at her every time she walked past to work, so she dragged her through the bars and toook her home.
Happily Bea caught the eye of a previous RANA adopter and decided to add to her RANA team! We are so thrilled she did! Bea now has someone to look after her for once, few deserve it more.
Charity Structure & Objectives
Type of Governing Doc: Charitable Trusts: Model Trust Deed GD2 How Charity is constituted: Trust
RANA'S GOALS & CHARITABLE OBJECTIVES
as set out in our Charity's Governing Document:
For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of animals, in particular dogs and cats, in Libya and Tunisia in need of care and attention and to promote humane behaviour towards such animals by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for such animals which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among such animals in North Africa.”
RANA'S TRUSTEES & ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
as set out in our Charity's Governing Document:
The RANA Charity is overseen by a board of trustees who are approved by the current serving board, none of these trustees are paid for their trusteeship (except for expenses related directly to the charity's activities). It is usually expected that at least one of our trustees travels to Tunisia to meet with fosters, rescuers and vets annually. These visits are important as the board of trustees are responsible for setting the strategic plan and direction of the charity. The trustees are responsible under the law of England and Wales for the correct & lawful operation of RANA. The board of Trustees operates and manages the RANA charity as a non-governmental, non-political, nonreligious organisation established in 2013.
The following people served for the full year ending April 5th 2024: Michaela Hutchinson Agnetha Dobson Karin Thomas
All trustees serve until they feel they can no longer give the required time and commitment to the charity, as each trustee takes their responsibility to the governance very seriously. Due to the long distances involved to travel to meet face to face, most Trustee meetings are held via online video conferencing (usually Zoom or Whats App video) & recorded, although face to face meetings are arranged where possible.
RANA'S MAIN ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT
in relation to the objectives set out in our Charity's Governing Document:
Throughout the year we have continued to support the costs of animals we previously agreed to rescue from the streets of Tunisia who were starving and at risk of being shot or poisoned. We have also increased the proportion of our donations towards TNR efforts. We have always belived and continue to do so, that neutering animals is key to decreasing the number of unwanted animals on the streets. It provides a solution to a problem which never seems to end. By reducing stray numbers we continue to provide a public benefit as there is less risks of rabies being passed to humans and less chance of strays roaming & causing car accidents
We have also provided a public benefit to those people who have contacted us in distress at what they have seen, and have taken an interest in wanting to adopt, or save the animal.
As well as supporting members of the public how need support in finding homes for the animals they have saved.
RANA'S MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
throughout 2023- 2024
2023 - 2024 brought with it lots of administrative issues, which were both time consuming and all consuming. Like many other small Charities, our bank was closed, which led to us losing thousands in donations, regular monthly donations were never set up again and the cost of living crisis has also led to regular supporters, reducing their regular giving. The knock on effect to our overall income has been huge and we have had to focus on supporting the animals we agreed to rescue in previous years, ensuring their board is paid for and we support the fosters. This has resulted in us having to say no to many pleas to save animals from the streets. Heartbreaking and further reminding us, what invaluable, great work RANA does as a Charity.
As during 22-23, the animal adoption market is still extremely slow. Unwanted animals which were bought during Lockdown continue to saturate the shelters in the UK and across the world. Our database which was once set to a cap of 100 applications a month, now receives around 3 applications, our adoption rate has therefore plummeted compared with previous years.
On a positive note, we are now registered for Gift Aid and we have a new Bank Account with the Co-op. We have also rehomed animals which are notoriously tricky to find homes for, large dogs, blind cats, black cats and older animals. We also brought a cat to the UK that was originally saved from Somalia where it was due to be poisoned. We have had new volunteers join our team, helping with Social Media posts and wanting to begin a Newsletter and Blog which we hope will help us reach new supporters and adopters.
We have also carried out the most TNR sterilisations to date. Something we are very proud of.
.
RANA'S FINANCIAL REVIEW
Charity's policy on reserves:
The RANA board of Trustees would like to hold £5,000 in reserve funds as back up for emergency vet bills, which we have managed to achieve this year.
Investment Policy:
The RANA board of trustees have no plans for an investment policy to be put in place as we do not hold funds for investment purposes.
Trustees responsibilities for the financial statement:
The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees Report and the financial statements in accordance with the applicable law and United Kingdom accounting standards. The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give an accurate view of the accounts in regard to income and expenditure.
The trustees in preparing these accounts for the year ending 5th April 2024 have applied the following:
-
- A robust and full transparent system of accounting through the financial year.
-
- Observed the methods and principals of the Charities SORP.
-
- Followed guidance issued by our independent auditor.
Investment Policy:
The RANA board of trustees have no plans for an investment policy to be put in place as we do not hold funds for investment purposes.

Our Favoun"le 23-24 Adoptions JOHNNY IN 2018 THE RANA TEAM WERE AT THE PAT SHELTER WHEN A GIANT DOG WA5 BROUGHT IN. HE HAD JUST BEEN SAVED FROM BEING HUNG FROM A TREE WHERE SOME EVIL MAN WAS TRYING TO KILL HIM. HE WAS QUIET. KIND AND GENTLE WITH THE 100 DOGS HE MET IN THE SHELTER. John went on to prove what a gentle giant he was when he protected the weaker dogs in the shelter and stoppped dog fights by head butting the ogressive dogs out the woy. He was overlooked time and time ogain ond we were heart broken that this incredible dog was not finding the love his deserved. Finally, a wonderf ul couple who wonted a dog to occompany them on their travels across Europe got in touch: They adopted Johnny and he now lives the life we all dream of! He is perfect with other dogs and has friends across the continent! He has camped next to stunning green lake5, galloped over Swiss Mountains. he has his own little doggy dressing gown and we are told he is the star of the show where ever he goes (even acting os a flower-boy in a wedding!) This dog is a dream, and is now living the dream. ond we are so proud of everything we did to help make this ho en.
