FROM THE RANA TEAM

## M A T H I L D E **BLIND CAT**

**Mathilde was spotted outside a coffee shop, as an abandoned confused blind little kitten, who stood no chance of survival on the streets of Tunis on her own.**

**Mathilde was always very timid and wary of new noises and we were worried if she would ever find a home with her disabilities.**

**Thankfully, one of our previous RANA adopters, who already had blind cat Eddie (also rescued by the same rescuer, Meriam) wanted to adopt her. Mathilde now lives in London and loves snoozing in the bed with owners who adore her. She enjoys her life and is loved, nothing makes us happier!**

## S I R I U S

## **SHELTER CAT THAT GOT LUCKY!**

**Silas lived in the extremely overcrowded shelter in Tunis and caught our eyes by chance. We needed a dog, cat testing to ensure he would fit into his future home Silas took it upon himself to prove that not only was the dog good with cats, but that he was great with dogs and loved people too! He could not have paraded himself more infront of the camera, displaying his confident character and virtually screaming that he wanted out of the bars and to have humans to love every day. Thankfully Silas got his wish by catching the eye of a previous RANA adopter who took in Bingo in the previous year. She knew how amazing Tunisian rescue cats could be and wanted to make change Silas’ life too. So many cats die in the shelter, we are so happy Silas was not one of them.**

## _Our Favourite 22-23 Adoptions_

P A N D A

OUR RANA TEAM FIRST MET PANDA IN 2017. HE WAS ALREADY AT THIS STAGE AN “OLD TIMER” IN THE SHELTER. RESCUED FROM THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS A 2 WEEK OLD PUP, WHERE HE HAD BEEN THROWN OUT OF A CAR WINDOW. HE WAS BOTTLE FED AND TAKEN TO THE SHELTER WHEN HE WAS BIG ENOUGH TO MIX WITH THE OTHER 100 DOGS THERE. HERE HE STAYED, BEING OVER LOOKED TIME AND TIME AGAIN. A FRIENDLY GIANT WHO WAS WINNING NO ONES HEARTS... UNTIL!

he was spotted by a lovely couple in the UK who lived on a farm and already had a collection of rescue animals. They wanted to make a make a big impact on an animals life and there is no doubt they did this.

We know Panda would have lived his entire life in the overcrowded shelter if it were not for them, taking a chance on this Gentle Giant.

He would never have experienced a dog walk, cuddles by the fire on a cold winter night, sand between his toes on a windy visit to the UK coast, being able to freely run around his very own field and endless love dished out from his owners.

Panda is living all his dreams and we could not be happier for him.

## **Charity Structure & Objectives**

# **Type of Governing Doc: Charitable Trusts: Model Trust Deed GD2 How Charity is constituted: Trust**

## **RANA'S GOALS & CHARITABLE OBJECTIVES**

_as set out in our Charity's Governing Document:_

_For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of animals, in particular dogs and cats, in Libya and Tunisia in need of care and attention and to promote humane behaviour towards such animals by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for such animals which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among such animals in North Africa.”_

## **RANA'S TRUSTEES & ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE**

_as set out in our Charity's Governing Document:_

The RANA Charity is overseen by a board of trustees who are approved by the current serving board, none of these trustees are paid for their trusteeship (except for expenses related directly to the charity's activities). It is usually expected that at least one of our trustees travels to Tunisia to meet with fosters, rescuers and vets annually. These visits are important as the board of trustees are responsible for setting the strategic plan and direction of the charity. The trustees are responsible under the law of England and Wales for the correct & lawful operation of RANA. The board of Trustees operates and manages the RANA charity as a non-governmental, nonpolitical, non-religious organisation established in 2013.

The following people served for the full year ending April 5th 2023: Michaela Hutchinson Agnetha Dobson Karin Thomas

All trustees serve until they feel they can no longer give the required time and commitment to the charity, as each trustee takes their responsibility to the governance very seriously. Due to the long distances involved to travel to meet face to face, most Trustee meetings are held via online video conferencing (usually Zoom or Whats App video) & recorded, although face to face meetings are arranged where possible.

## **RANA'S MAIN ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT**

_in relation to the objectives set out in our Charity's Governing Document:_

Throughout the year we have continued to support the costs of animals we previously agreed to rescue from the streets of Tunisia who were starving and at risk of being shot or poisoned. We have also increased the proportion of our donations on In removing stray unwanted animals from the street we have provided a public benefit by reducing the risk of strays potentially causing car accidents, attacking the public when they are in their large packs and minimising the risk of disease, such as rabies (a huge concern in Africa) spreading.

We have also provided a public benefit to those people who have contacted us in distress at what they have seen, and have taken an interest in wanting to adopt, or save the animal.

We have also provided assistance to those few animal loving volunteers on the ground in Tunisia who frequently give up rooms in their homes to house stray animals, sacrifice feeding themselves in order to feed animals on the streets and who are in desperate need of support in a country which dedicates no Government funding or support to rescuing stray animals.

## **RANA'S MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE**

_throughout 2022- 2023_

2022 - 2023 proved to be another challenging year for RANA.

Covid-19 and Brexit continued to impact heavily on our RANA rescue work. The “Rehoming Market” is very different to one we have ever experienced since RANA was established almost 10 years ago. Unwanted animals which were bought during Lockdown, now saturate the shelters in the UK. People did not think ahead to life beyond lockdown and realised on returning to work, they did not have the time to look after the pets they had purchased, or due to lack of training and exposure to people, dogs were deemed unruly and difficult to handle. This has meant adopters are overwhelmed with the choice of animals they can adopt in the UK.

The Cost of Living Crisis has also impacted on donations and people’s ability to adopt and pay to feed another mouth. The adoption rate has therefore plummeted compared with previous years.

We used this year to adapt to a new team of Trustees, setting goals for the next few years and working out how best to ‘ride the storm’. We want to ensure RANA survives, we believe as ever we are doing great, important work. We know from our inbox being contacted daily how much people who live in Tunisia, or are on holiday, want to help save animals they see suffering.

We were really proud that we managed to rehome animals this year, even though it was our trickiest year yet. Something we are aware was said last year, but to those animals who have been adopted, saved from the streets, it has changed their lives. We have also reduced suffering in the future by sterilising animals with our TNR campaign.

.

## **RANA'S FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## _**Charity's policy on reserves:**_

The RANA board of Trustees would like to hold £5,000 in reserve funds as back up for emergency vet bills, which we have managed to achieve this year.

## _**Investment Policy:**_

The RANA board of trustees have no plans for an investment policy to be put in place as we do not hold funds for investment purposes.

## _**Trustees responsibilities for the financial statement:**_

The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees Report and the financial statements in accordance with the applicable law and United Kingdom accounting standards. The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give an accurate view of the accounts in regard to income and expenditure.

The trustees in preparing these accounts for the year ending 5th April 2023 have applied the following:

- - A robust and full transparent system of accounting through the financial year.

- - Observed the methods and principals of the Charities SORP.

- - Followed guidance issued by our independent auditor.

## _**Investment Policy:**_

The RANA board of trustees have no plans for an investment policy to be put in place as we do not hold funds for investment purposes.

## **DECLARATION**
