years we￿e expanded the support we offer to Include a food

We use the Recovery Model to formulate our approach to
workinq with peoplè. focusing on Identifylno strengths.
values, ano interests. and uslnq that as the basis for change.
We work wlth people to lind a purpose and olfer volunteer
and Snvolvement opportunities at the servlce and wlthiTh the
wider cornmunity. Our support team have all been trained ifi
Psychologlcally Inlormed £nvlronments and we de5rgn and
deliver our sèrvices In a trauma infornied way. We worked
with over 1000 people last year and at the end o12020f21 had
1075 reglstered service users wlth 83 dlllerent natlonalitles
represented. aqed Ir¢m 78 to 81 years old.
When the pandemic started our ambition was to malntaln as
much service delivery as possible in line with government
qutdeline$ and best practice. Almost lrnmediately we were
Contacted by our volunteers. supporters. local rnutual ald
oroups. buslnesses, and our partner5 to see If they could
svpport us. At a lime when wè were oenulnely concerned about
our ability to meet the neèd In the clty we were overwhelmed by
the olfers of support.

The orqanlsatlon Is reglstered as a Charltable Incorporated
Organisatlon ICIOI and Is governed by the Constitutlon
reqlstered wilh the Charity Commlsslon on 25th February 2019.

Officer. The Chief Exècutive Is a Chartered Manager with ovef 13
veJrs' experience working In the Thlr¥J Sector and is supported

Our Purposes and actlvltles
The Crfjod S￿pherd was estab115hed by thÈ Brothers ol St
John of God. a rellqious Order who have supported the IcKal
comrnunity for 50 yèars. Two ol our core values are hospitality
and tompassion for the most disadvanlaqed. Our team délivèr
servlces in a way that makes people feel valued and always try
to hear thelr volce. The Good Shepherd has operated a food antj
support service in Wolvethampton since 2003. Our airn is to end
hornelessne5s In Wolverhampton and support people out of
poverty. Wt work wlth the rnost dlsadvantaqed people in
communlty Includlng people wlth multiple anis complex netds,
asylum seekers and people experiencinq homdèssnèss.

When the govèrnment announced the 'Everyone In. 89enda
durlnq the pandemlc, theré were 20 people sleeping In the nlght
shelter based In our bulldiThg and another 40 to 50 sleeplng
on the streets. The local authority secureé a nearby hotel to
house people and by the end of the first weekend over 70
people had been accomrnodate¢ there. Our team worked with
the countll and our partners on a to-ofditlated plan to support
pèople placéd in thè hotèl and Providè 24-hour, seven day a
week support. We also worked with local lo¢)d charitles and lalth
Qroups to provld• a meal three tlmes a day, s•v•n days a week,
for everyone who was staylng there.
Houslnq Flrst
The Hpu51nq Flr5t pllot was commissloned by the Minlstry
for F¢ouslng. Communltles and Local Government (now the
Department for LevellSng Up. Housln9 and Communitlesl In
three combined authoritles to lest the model's effectiveness in
the UK. The areas chosen were the West Klidlands, LiverporA.
and Greater Manchester. Housing First is a Thationally recognisèd
interveThtton for people who have experienced homelessness
have multiple and complex disadvantages, and have been

Our support tèam's prlorlty was to source long term solutlons
lor people and they took the tlme to work through barrler

Our art and photography classes have proved extremely

Over a Pèriod ol several months the volunteers and cllents
produced a laThtastlc project with fundlng Irorn We51 Midlands
Combined Authority entstled'D*scardeLI'. This photographv
project focused on an examination of Urban Waste and a 'soclety
whlch dlscards possessions and people,. It led to the wbllcatlon
ol a hardback book and vTrdeo hlqhlighting the excellent array of
photoqraphy snapped by the partlclpants.

In the 20121 Ilnanclal year we Increased our Houslnq Flrst
service ano now grovlde four specialist Houslng First workers
supportlng 32 people who have slept rouoh an(J have multiple
disadvantage5 and complex need& Housing First fi15 with our
values and ethos as an orqani5alion and we believe housiTrq is a
universal hurnan right. The project has been hugely succe55lul
and has filled a 4ap in provislon.
Our main ¢llent 4roup is rouoh sleepers and those vtho are
vulnerabl• or In povèrty as well a5 tarniltes in need. With the
food servlce underplnning that help •nd support, tackling food
waste is also somethlng wè are passlonate about to ensure food
doesn't go to landllll.
Support
Neil, one of the people supported through Housing First. had
been street horneless on and off for nearly three decades. He
now has his own fully furnished flat and a dedicateil worker
to provlde person"cèntred support."Now I look forward to
gettlng up every mornlng, whereas when I was on the streets
I lust wanted to sleep most ol the tirne. I would find shelter In
oorways wherever I could. Once I'm settled I'd like to start
¥￿unteering and help others who were In my 51tuation.-

Our s¢Jpported lettlngs scheme has contlnued to provide good
quallty private sector accommodatlon at affordable rates wlth
support for lenan15 and landlords. We currently support 20
people who were horneless and are now accommodated through
thé schème and wlll bè expanding thi5 over the next 12 rnonth5.
For the145t 12 monlhs we have provided rapid access to
tounsÈlling session5 two days a week for our Service user5 in
partnership with Wolverhampton Counsellinq Servlces. The lead
counsellor Otls Carey dellvers 12 sesslons per week for people
Twho would not usually be able to access counselllng or have
barriers accesslng mainstream servfjces. He also supports the
development of the art Iherapy programme and has provlded
group counsellinq sessTron&
Our meanlnolul actl¥lty programme was closed throughout the
tlrst two lockdowns and this limited the number ol sesslons we
could offer. We facilllated 150 tjroup sesslons duflng the year
and enqaged 16 people who had slept rough in meaningful
actlvity. The teanr relied on phone calls and walks In a local park
to keep In touch with people. One ol the art session lacilitator5
also dld one-to-one Interventlons with people over the phone
or vSa Zoom and we dropped off art suppllès to the group
particlpants so they could contlnue wlth thelr work.

purchaslng the building we currently rèftt wttich will be
completed in the next ruiancial year.

Football Club and the Wolves Foundation. We comply with the

As we start to re-introduce our services wlth the hopeful
roadrnjp towards ngrmality, we have consulted gur famllies
bout a new concept which we feel will give everyone more
choitt whèn attending lor food. We arè aware that wè ère a very
multi-tultural sèrvicè and each of the famllies we support has
diflèrent nèèds. WÈ want to introducè a greater variety of food
items whSch glves people the ability to cook at home locusiThg on
the whole lamlty.

We are launching a new inltiative for lamilies, a communltv
pantry where thèy can sèled their own food from the available
optlons glvlng them the abllity to cook meals at home. Not only
oes thls ensure they select food they know they wlll use- thus
reduclnq the rlsk ol wastage- It also recreates the ethos of
shopor supermarket and reduces the stlgma of havlng to queue
for a food parcel.

We wc<k closely wtth the Hospltaller Order ol St. John ol Go
who havè thè power to appoint and remove Trustees. At present
three of our Trustees are professed Brothers of the Order. This
ensures that our ethos and worklng practlces are Inforrned bv

Order, and our own board ol trustees. an¢J we are free to pursue
