Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 31 March 2025

Objectives and activities

The charity's objects

The object of the Friends of Roundhay St. John's Church is for the benefit of the public to maintain, repair, restore, preserve, improve and enhance the fabric of the church of Roundhay St Johns, Leeds, its monuments, fixtures, fittings, furniture, stained glass, ornaments, and other chattels and its churchyard.

Public benefit statement

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular members of the public have mentioned and complimented us on the state of the churchyard.

Achievements and performance

Ultimately the Ariens lawnmowers which we had used very successfully reached the end of their usable life and we took the advice of the lawnmower engineers and replaced them initially with one Chinese Weibang machine. While the Aiens machines had proved extremely robust in general it was rapidly realised that the new machine was indeed even better at coping with the very uneven terrain of the Churchyard and proved able to provide an excellent cutting finish overall. As a result of the success of the first Wibang machine we decided to use the donated funds to purchase a second although unfortunately the price had increased moderately over the months which had elapsed since we purchased the first. However as will be recorded in next years report we were to enjoy the use of them very briefly as following the year end our garden store was burgled despite all the security that we had in place, but details of this will be in the next year’s report.

During the year the several members of the small group managed to keep the north church graveyard in a presentable and attractive condition for visitors and others using the footpath through the graveyard as an access point to Roundhay Park. The Church alongside the graveyard remains abandoned by the owners, the Pentecostal City Mission with the exception that they have now surrounded it with security linked fencing carrying signs which imply that work on the Church is in hand and about to start, but we have seen no sign of any work commencing. This is a great pity as memorials in and outside the building relate to many of the people involved in the original development of Roundhay Park and the Mansion House as visitors see it today.

Financial review

The net payments for the year were £4,850, including net payments of £2,705 on unrestricted funds and net payments of £2,145 on restricted funds.

Reserves policy

The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £7,014.

There is no reserves policy at the moment.
