## Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 31 March 2024

## **Objectives and activities**

## **The charity's objects**

The object of the Friends of Roundhay St. John's Church is for the benefit of the public to maintain, repair, restore, preserve, improve and enhance the fabric of the church of Roundhay St Johns, Leeds its monuments, fixtures, fittings, furniture, stained glass, ornaments, and other chattels and its churchyard.

## **Public benefit statement**

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular members of the public have mentioned and complimented us on the state of the churchyard.

## **Achievements and performance**

The mowers used have been two Ariens mowers. Ariens is a North American make and they have coped with the relatively heavy duty work asked of them admirably, but for perhaps 18 months we have noticed that when they have malfunctioned and there has been a need to return the machines to the lawnmower engineers that obtaining the appropriate spare parts has been increasingly slow. Very recently one of the machines malfunctioned and the Engineers eventually reported to us that it was proving impossible to obtain the required spare part and that the machine was therefore unrepairable. Further enquiry has revealed that Ariens are no longer exporting lawnmowers to Europe. With advice from the Engineers we have replaced this machine with a Chinese machine which we are advised is as robust. We are retaining the now non functioning Ariens as a possible donor of parts for the other machine which continues to operate until that becomes unworkable. Looking back the decision to buy the Ariens, one of which was new and the other second-hand was a good decision and as the lawnmower engineers informed us “they owed us nothing”. The machines coped effectively with very rough cutting for a number of years. So far the new machine looks to be every bit as robust and capable.

With help from several other volunteers we have maintained the North Graveyard in a presentable condition such that the regular and moderately frequent visitors can access their family graves easily. We have arranged and paid for the restoration of a number of dilapidated graves from the charity’s funds. We have both improved the security and damp proofing of the onsite storage shed which has been created utilising three adjacent walls which happen to be in close proximity towards the east end of the church and when roofed over with the provision of a door have created a storage facility. This enables satisfactory, safe and dry storage of the lawn mowers and strimmer's which in general give excellent and satisfactory service. At times because of the relatively heavy duty nature of the work asked of the machinery they do malfunction and two of us are involved in taking them to/from the lawnmower engineers for repair.

## **Financial review**

The net receipts for the year were £1,464, including net receipts of £135 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £1,329 on restricted funds after transfers.

## **Reserves policy**

The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £9,359. There is no reserves policy at the moment.
