OBJECllVES AND AcrIvtTIES
Objectives and aKrns
RRN was estsblished in 2016 in response to the humanitarian crisis arising out of the cwil war in Syria. Over the year5
RRN has evolved and in this finanaal year RRN assisted refugees re￿ndY arrived in the United Kingdom in a variety of
different ways, wth the overdll objective of helping them to resettle into new communities in Hampshire induding
PotsmoLJth. RRN has a portfolio of sUPPOrt services and attivities that include securing suitable rental accommodation
and providing essential dothing and household Vcerns for ftmilies under the Resettlement Scheme. IT equipment can
also be provided where needed. Other expenses SLJch as the cost of driving lessons might also be Covered depending on
the circumthnw. RRN enables refugees to a￿5$ ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) dasses and to
receive employment support and training Whe￿ necessary. A new development in this financial year has been to
establish a projett based in PortsmoLJth whith prowdes a venue for young unaccompanied minors to meet and receive
sUp￿rt through workshops, English lessons, sknlls building and community events.
RRN would not be able to run extensive progTrmme of activities and support without the input of its Comm￿ted and
sknlled team, including RRN'S thirty one volunteers. Our CEO, Nadia Potts, has been with RRN for several year5 but in
this financial year she became RRN'S first employed member of strdff and brings rnany years of experien￿ in the sector
to her leadership role.
At the dose of 2023 RRN conducted a Stratsgic Rewew and identified its prior￿e$ for the following three years. One of
the key features of that review was to plan for the expansion of a pilot project that RRN had been running for some time
called the South Downs Youth Discovery ProJ"ert. In line with the conclusions of the Strategic Review RRN made an
application to the National Lottery Community Fund and was successful in that application. Consequendy, RRN has
secured funding to njn the projett for the next three years. Having secured that funding and after a period of intense
planning the Youth Discovery Project NEf opened its door5 in Portsmouth in September. The weekly drop-in sessions
have proved popular with young unaccompanied Min0￿ and attendan￿ numbers have grown. In addition to the weekly
sessions regular tiips are organised which provide the young peopk with a chance to explore local places of interest and
am about local history, environment and culture.

Nadia Potts, our CEO, has worked closely wfch Emily Mott, one of our twstees, on developing this project and befften
them and with help from others, they have put together a strong team to run and mana9e the projett going forward.
This has involved recruiting two more part-time rnembers of staff to the posts of youth worker and yc>uth coordinator,
engaging a self-employed ESOL teather and four volunteers. Together this committed team ensures that the young
pathapants get the most out of the sessions.
Arnther key feature of the Strategic Review wa5 the resolution that RRN would make it a priority to establish a steady
income stream. HistOri￿llY RRN'S income has largely come from one fundraising event held in alternate yea￿, however,
as things have changed over time RRN has had tr> re-think funding strategy. In order to secure the funding its needs
RRN has changed strategy and in this financial year placed emphasis on making grant applications. RRN is
prixjd to report that it SeCu￿d a number of grants and that this gone a long way to put the charity on a sound financial
footy"ng. In the financial year ending Deomber 2024 RRN was in re￿Ipt of grant funding from: The Nab"onal Lottery
Ci)mmunty Fund, The Postcode Lottery, The Hilden Charitsble Fund and Projett Spark. In addition, several of RRN'S
community projects have been funded in full or in part by Havant Borough Council and East Hampshire District Counal.

RURAL REFUGEE NEfwoRK
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
RRN'S key charitable purpose is to help refugees and asylum seekers *ttle in their new comMun￿es. It is the￿fOre
important that there is an understanding within these Commun￿e5 of the challenges fa￿d by refugee5 and a5￿uM
seekers and an understrdnding of the contribution they can make to society if given the support they need. En the
Strategic Review, referred to above, RRN renewed its COMM￿Ment to this aspect of its work and identified tt as one of its
prior￿￿$ for the following three years. In line w￿￿ this reSolUt￿On a number of events were held during this finanoal year
which wefft designed to increase awareness of the difficuEb'es fa￿d by refugees and asylum seekers and the ways in
which they can be helped. For example, in the early part of this year, in conjuncbon with Bedales School, RRN put on a
successful art sale. As well as raising funds ft)r RRN'S work those attending We￿ introduced to the work that RRN doe5
and leamed how modest sums of money could tran5forni the lives of those RRN aims to assist. Shortly thereafter the
Chair c>f the Board of Trnstees gave a talk to another local sch(M)I, Churcher's College, about the work that RRN does and
how the live5 of refugees can be ￿nSf0M)ed through imaginative and effettive intervention. Furthermore, and in a
similar vein Emily Jonas, one of RRN'S trustees, gave a well-received talk to the pea￿ and JustiTr Group in Petersfield
about the challenges fa￿d by those we help and the work that is done to address those challenges and in the autumn
Nadia Potts worked with siudellts at Bedales Sch¢)ol Dn their Global Perspective project focusing on the issues faced by
refijgees and asylurn seekers.
RRN has always been pmud of the work that it does in partnership wth other organisats.ons and has a strong culiure of
collaboration and c(M)peration. Our CEO, Nadia Potts, is well connected to and respected by partner organisations and
cOnsequen￿Y RRN is able to rnaximise its impatt. This is notsvithstallding the fact that it has just a few employees atK1
modest reSoUr￿s.
During this financial y￿r RRN continued its colla￿ratiOn with Havant Borough Council and East Hants Distritt cou￿1 to
provide ESOL dasses in both Petersfield in Havant. The Cla￿e5 in Havant were for Ukrainian women who had previously
5twggled to find the language supp)rt they need and they were enhanced by monthly trips which proved both effettive
and popular. This project was evaluated In June 2024 and the Im￿ct that it has is considerable as demonstratsd by the
evaluation report prepared by Emity JDnas.
2024
08
ust-2024-fin
Again, through worfong with other5 RRN, has been able to help Seal￿ accommodation for those seektng to siart new
lives in the un￿ed Kingdom. In this financial year worb.ng w￿h local landlords and local authorits.es RRN has Iken able to
provide homes for one family and for a separate individual arriving here under the Resettlement Program. RRN'S
community team, vvorknng with another charity, Two Saints and IrKal authorties have been able to help those arriving
setde and ftel supported.
RRN'S cornmunity team and employment tsam continLJed to supwrt families who have been here for longer and who it
was considered might continue to benefft from support or individual guidan￿ to secure employment andlor to progress
wth their career ambitions. In this finanaal year RRN'S Community Volunteers supported a totsl of eight refugee farnilies
and the Education and Employment team helped five refugees. Furthermore, worknng in collaboraty.on w￿h another
organisation, Communty First, RRN provided First Aid Training for a group of Ukrainian Refugees and later in the year,
wor￿ng with Action For Child Trauma Intemational, put on a training session for tho* interested in identifying and
addressing trauma symptoms amongst those RRN is seeknng to help. During this financial year RRN also identified a
sm311 but important need fc>r ESOL dasses for Ukrainian students hoping to sit IELTS (International English Language
Testing System) exams. These are challenging tests for those seeking to enter high skilled employrner)t and wth a grant
from Havant Borough CDunol RRN was able to put on dasses for a small number of students over a period of eleven
wee￿.
The Strategic Review can be found on the WebS￿e at..
It is clear from the account given aLN)ve of RRN'S ath"wties that the strdff and volunteers deliver an effeLtive and
cost*ffettive programme of SUp￿rt to meet the needs of the tamilies it supports. This is particularly the case when
has Wor￿ in tollaLK)ration wtth other organi￿tiOns, enabling the charity to deliver an impressive level of servi￿,
no￿lth5￿nding the fart that it is a comparatively small chèrty. In achieving this RRN is also gready assisted by the
extensive input of the Board of Trustees and many local individua15 and organisations who support RRN. In this financial
year RRN was significantyy assistsd. On￿ ￿aIn, by Bedales School, Portsmouth City of Sanctuary and St Lauren￿'S
Church.
In managing the work of the d￿rity the Board of Trus￿ have had regard to the guidan￿ isSLJed by the Charity
Commi55ion on publ￿ benefft.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
RRN'S key achievements in this financial year was the development of the Youth DÈscovery Project and the opening of
NEST dropin centre in Portsmouth. Its key achievernents also induded the other steps it made towards bringing the
aCtiV￿e$ of the charity in line wf(h RRN'S Stratsgic Review; narnely by pursuing a poliry to secure more fJnding through
grant applications and strengthening the work rt does to increase public awareness of the challenges faced by refugee5
and asylum seeke￿. During the year the Board of Trustees continued to review and update core poliaes and
pro￿dure5.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial position
The chariiable work of Rural Refvgee Network continues to attract generous donats.ons from individuals but, in addition
this year, h35 seen an increase in both restriLted and unrestritted grants from institutions that retognise the imptsrtance
of our worf( in helping refugees and asylum seekers to find their feet in Dur communities.

Gross Income for 2024 indudes £54k of rethcted grants from charitsble institutions, local authorrfcies and the national
lottery. These funded not only ESOL leaming and finding*mployment asSiStsn￿ but also, importantly, the 3-year
project to establish and run Ihe Portsmouth dmp-in centre mentioned above. Unrestrictsd grdnts and donations
underpinned the general work of the organisation and amounted to a further £12k whilst fundraising (inclLJding the
biennial art show) prodU￿d £6k.
Expenditure on all charitable aLtvities has intreased year-on-year and we ended 2024 in a secure financh?I ￿$1￿"0n to
continue our work into 2025 and beyond.
The Trustee5 have reviewed the level of reserves necessary to keep the charity in a sustainable ptssibon. They have
agreed to maintain the minimum ReSe￿e Level at £12k, representing the net of 6 months recurring income, less
outgoings, plus any contingent liabiltbes; the financial fore￿St for 2025-27 antiapates that RRN will continue to meet
this R￿erve Level whilst maintsining the scope of its support to refugees and asylum seekers I￿ally.
