What a yÈarl Not too long ago we passed thp year annlversary of the start of ihe firsi lockdown, Ind
not manyof us back I￿rt ever expected the misery of ihis viru5 to last so lon8. For many of us. It has
been deeply frustrating as the véy of life we took for 6ranred has been drastically altered. For
others. the mSsery has been muth more profovnd- we've lost I￿ed ones whom wè weren't able to
comfort we've lost job5 ond been unable to pay the rent.. We'￿ been 41 and our Mtality has yet to
fulty return.
Yes. we have ￿arned many lessons fjn appredotlng ihe present. Yes, we have wltnessed great
heroism in the likes of Captain Tom Moore. and the many frontllne workers in the NHS putting thelr
I￿eS at risk on a daity bays. We have once again learned gratefvlness with Thursday night applause
on the street. and as loca15we want tts 54y a heartfelt thankyou to Loxwood Surgery. But let us not
kid ourselvès. this list yearhas shaken usto ourverycore.

As of the APCM on 27" September 2020 we had 119 on the electoral ioll. slthough we estimate
there are 128 indwlduals whom we M)uld label 'regularf worshlppers. Unsurprisln¥ly last year we
saw no baptisms, although we celebrated fourwedding51 and held seven funerol 5eryice5 and three
Interments.
When Rev Gre8 I￿1ved In 2016 4xJr Inkial vision wa5 to double our attendan¢e. Back then the
Ot￿ber figures were 34 adults and four children. We very nearly hlt our tdrget in 2019 and were
certainly hoping to surpas5 it in 2020 until Co¥id dtsrupted things. Sadly therefore, the physKal
numbers dld r¢ot reflett the realiiy of those wor5hipplnE wlth us: 46 adults and seven children.
However, when takin8 into eonsideratton our online attendees lflgures tBken from YouTubE every

one of the first churches ifi the dlocese to go onllne. which Is Impresslve con5iderln8 we are a rural
parish wlthoLrt a staff tearn and ony techy whizz-kids. We opted for the YouTube open d¢)or
approach, slnce we want ovrsunday services and the preached word to be accessible to as mony os
PQ551ble within our community. With re8ards to church fellowship online, we find that Zoorn
midweek meetln8s provlde the presentr and conversatton WÈ miss on Sundays.
Se far, our YouTutR Ch4nnel has received over 12,OODviews, some 5erv¢ces have receNÈd over 500
views alone, a￿1 we ha¥e recewed messages of thanks and 5UPPOrt from Africa. North and
Australia. We've lon8ed that our vision of maklng Jesus known mlght have a rlpple effed across the
worfd. and our online presence hos13rgely rn4de that pc*ssible. Having a¢) online plarform has also
allowed us to engage, introduce and get to know our ￿er$eaS mission partners much more easily*

Similarty, our Men's and Women's Breakfasts might have seemed Ilke the least otY41¢u5 tr3n5it¢on

Outdoor Church
Throughout the summer, whitst many churc￿$ were Miii uncertain a1￿ut re*ntering ¢hur¢h
bulldlngs for physlcal seNKes, having two beautiful ¢hur¢hyards we decided to meet outdoor5. This
made social distancing rnuch eas*r. and it eased pèoples, nerves about gatherings in confined
spa*s. In the twelvÈ servKes we ran tbreuEhout the summer. it only roined on one of them- the
firstl Other than that, it was pretty much beautifully Sunny every Sunday, and pretty much every

The week before the first lockdown we 50U8ht to leaflet every 51n8le house whthln the parish wlth
our church detalls and infoTmlnE them that we would be there to help In èny p8Storal and practtal
ways nÈ¢essary. There are some very long drive5 in parts ofthe parlshl Off the back of that. RevG￿E
set up a Whatsapp group with over 60 volunteers (many non-churchgeers from withln the
cornmunityl who to this day arÈ still picking up p￿St￿ptions, ta￿n£ dog5 on walks, offerin8 grocery
deliveries, mowirig lawns and much more. The Rertory and Church Office phone numbers featurèd
on the Loxwood Surgerfs automated response aThJ so tsr we Thust have wtlectivel¥ dellvered

Recognising the great need with redundancies and self.lsolat•)N in mind we did hvo further thlng5'.
we Set up a hardshlpfund. and we started arting a5 a foodbank outpost for Horsharn Matters. Many
thanks to the generous donors who have glven io the Hardship Fund durlng the14st year, well over

visiting homes has not been rossible. many hours have been spent on the phone Ilstening and

Ihou8h mu¢h of the above has spoken of the wayswe have sought to rexh out both In word and
actlon, we $hould mention the intentional way we have pursued spirftual growth durin8 such a tlme
as this. On &Jnday5 we have enjoyed preaching series In I Peter, the P5alTn5 6nd I Corinthians. Our
midweek Pilgrim 6roups have studled Esther, Exodus, and Hebtyws. Through both these teaching
#reams, alongshle ever-chareinÉ restrictions. we have bÈen tonstantty learning and releaming thèt
we are the Church Mt the ¢hurch buildings. This has been freeing as we have realised with new
clarity that church buildings are not what give us bètter aEcess to God, nor do closed church
buildin8s quell the mi55ion of the Church. With that in mind we have now run two evangeli5ti
oursesonline. the most recentone-Alpha attractingalmost20attendees.

attendance since 2016. Our prayer now, as physical Eatherings begln to resume, is that those

Last yearwe managed a 24n Prayer chaln In the run up to Pentecost. Havlng accompltshed that feat
we rw)w plan thai as a yearly habit. However, we recognise that our corporate prayer life cannot be
viewed through that lens. and we still have mLrh to learn throtEh prayer. Our parish prayer
meetin& the enginÈ room of èll we do ind which has become weekly throughout the pandemic. is
still very sm311. Not enou8h gratitude is shown to the same laithful prayer warriors who pray their
socks off each week. Out of all of the many thurch meetings we long that th¢5 one would grow as
Christians come to See pr4yer. and even prayin8 oul loud ak)n8side brothers and slsters, as thelr
nati￿ ian8ua8e.
Our online Ser¥￿eS have provided 8 8reat opportunity to have many new faces takln8 a lead. Our
deslre 15 that this contlnues W￿rt we meet ba(* sn per50n. We krnw that Erowth In knowledge of
our great sahatton should go hand In hand wlth growth in Se￿e, and whllst our ordained ¢let8y
Contingent wll shortly go from one io three, we pray thi5 will be more ihan matched by a growln8
team of lay servants.we will Shortly be welcomingjames Hanson Iwith his wonderful forniWI to stèrt
his title curècy post. and in September Rirhard Allan be8ins his OLM theolo8ical training. This 15
great season ol (hange, and faied with the pr05ped of resuminE regular church services we must
tèke seriously Ihe chance to reset- nat just restart. ￿1th so much abo￿ to be new, with so many
lessons learned this last year, once again we èpproach future understanding the need to be
tlexlble. We take on-boord the enloyment of our cornblned outdoor 5ewes Jnd leel exclted rather
than apprehenslve thatservlce patterns and styles are not set In stone.

whilst they were on Zoom will return in person when physical gatherin8s resume. ak)n8%de

But in March 2020 the first lockdown took place and lust about everythlng went sideways, if Mt
backwards. thereafteF. Most obvtOU51y* and as with most parlshes, COMD-19 has had a huge impact
on our finances. For many months during lockdown we received no loose plaie colkctions and all
par￿￿ events. such as the fetes, were caThcelled. And the small but 5teody income we received from
letting out our church ro¢ms to VariOU510(al organlsations drled up completsly too. But the biggest
quexksn was over our most $18olficant source of flnance, whlth Is regular 8fvln8 frorn church
members. Howwould that hokl up35the pandemlc unfolded?
Those uncertèlntles needed urgent con9derat￿Tr and 3clion. and I therefore asked Julie Sayers
io estimate what our budget and cash flow forecasts looked like for the year. Her excel￿￿1 and
h￿hlY professional work led us tts projett a shortfall of about £30,(KX) for the year. And because we
did not wish to dip into our reserves any rn¢xeth8n ab501utely neetssary* the Pccdecided ￿ launch

laborious task processing gift5 manually and Gift Ald is recovered in just a few days, to the Ereat

England Investment Fund the COIF Charitles Investment Fund. The Value of these Investments
Increased from £106.058 to £113,Q75 In 2020. They produtrd dividends totalling £3.192 durlng the
year. Ho￿*ver, in an un￿rtain world the value of these investments may go down as well as up. If

In terms of Investing in the fabric Of our buildinES* no malor expenditvre is planned for 2021 eX￿pt

In Septernber 2020. Jane Johnson stepped down as tha Parish Safeguarding
Offic8r after rnany years of faithful seNice. We are very grateful for h8r hard
work and attention to detsil. She h85 harnded over her role 88 PSO 8nd DBS
validator to Ruth Allan.
As a parish we fully understand that e¥eryon• Is r•sponslble for ensuring that
all chlldren, young people and vulnerable adults are safe in Church and at all
our athvitSes. However as charity tnjstees, all PCC members, along with the
Incurnbent, are corporately legally accountable lor ensurin9 good
safeguarding practice in the parish and for maklng Safeguardlng a
governance priority. Our PCC must maintain the appointment of
Safeguarding Offi￿1 who WQTk5 With Ihe Diocese to give gLridance as to how
to achieve the highest possible standards ol Safeguarding. The PCC review
and adopt annually the Church ol England SafegvardirvJ Policy 'Promoting a
Safer Church, and the Pdlcy Statement Is displayed In both Churches. Any
Safeguarding incident must be reported to the Dl¢)cesan Safeguarding AdvSsor
vA)o would then also inforfft the Charitles Commisslon.

Effe¢14ve trainlng plays an Important part in supporting PCC members to
(tischarge their responsibilities and only the Safeguarding Baslc awareness
CO Is now mandalory for all PCC Members. All new members have completed
the required trainlng. New Training Guidan￿ was published in January 2021
and, in addition to the In¢urnbent and LLM, Church Wardens, Pastoral Team
and Youth Leaders are now expected to attend Training Courses i
Leadership and Safer Recruitment. Domestic Abuse. Training in DonEsti
Abuse is required for the Ineumbeni, LLM, Youth Leaders. Pastoral team and
thè PSO. Due to Covid-19 several coutses have been offered onlintr with
limited availability so some training needs remain outstanding. Training Is
ongoing and must be refreshed every 3 years. Regarding DBS dearance,
there are at present 18 Church Offitsts and Parishioners who have DBS
deaT3nce, renewed every 5 years. Thè database. has been updated so that
¥wth the help of th8 Parish Administrator we are able to keep 81 training
records and DBS dearance up to date.
Th¢ Risk Assessments for all PCC approved aetivities ara remewed annually
by the Group Leaders and arnendsd rf ne￿Ssary, before being reviewed and
approved by the PCC. New acts"vrties are assessed before they begin so this
Is an ongoing procedure. This past year has posed the Challenge of Covid-19
and risk a5se$sments lor both out door servi￿$ and online Zoom actNity for

magazine for ournei8hb)ur, KiTdfoTd with Piai5tow, as they found that an online edition did not
work forth¢m.
Kirdford and Plastow hav¢ now fornied a Joint Benefic¢ with Wisborough Green and kav¢
infornied us that they will no lonBer require us to print their trwine after March 2021.
The account for the year2020 shows i small profit of £1106. Incom¢ was down £530 on 2019
mainlydue to the inability to collect all the annual subscriptions. Thcr¢ was also a small redu¢tiOA
in advertisin8 Tev¢nuc. Alfold PC made their beiatrd grant of DOO from 2019. Exp¢ndiiure was
down by £911.
