Rory’s Well Annual Report 31 October 2020

Rory’s Well is a life-giving charity working sensitively and co-operatively within rural Sierra Leone, empowering local people and transferring skills for future independence ... "h elping those in need to help themselves in a truly sustainable way”

Our 5th year as a registered charity has been a year of 2 halves, before and after COVID.

Until April 2020 we operated normally fund raising, supporting our partner PAD-SL to continue to maintain and extend our village regeneration initiatives in rural Sierra Leone (SL) and visiting SL as Trustees to ensure progress.

Once the immediate impact of COVID became apparent we revised our plans as income was deferred and fund raising events cancelled. We diverted our energies and those of our supporters to the immediate impact of COVID in our area of operation. Our COVID appeal ensured that the 50 vil-lages we support were supplied with rice to stave off famine as a consequence of eating their seed rice whilst in lockdown.

We also prioritised provision of clean water and supplied sanitation equipment and managed to maintain our commitment to new and existing villages that were part of our farming programme with support for bee farming, Inland Valley Swamp rice growing and Women’s upland farming. Our plans to market our honey commercially in SL were thwarted by COVID to some extent but again with replanning we reshaped our ambitions to keep things afloat.

This meant we had to dip into our reserves which is why the expenditure exceeds income in this year. We did this in the knowledge that grants agreed would be honoured but in a different time frame.

When things stabilised in terms of COVID we experienced another tragedy. We lost one of our co founders to cancer. Tony Evans had been the driving force behind many initiatives but particularly the introduction of Agroforestry (inga Alley Cropping). We have managed to reshape this programme to ensure the investment in previous years - introducing and planting Inga orchards and a demo farm were protected and found another champion to take the initiative forward.

So despite a very difficult year we have managed, in conjunction with our partners, to honour all of our commitments to the communities we support and continue to work within the values and commitments we hold dear.

Indeed COVID has made us focus on greater empowerment, succession planning and sustainability in both UK and SL . We have introduced technology for remote monitoring, have introduced ground breaking Monitoring and Evaluation techniques (QuIP) and our Carbon Life Balancing scheme which link s investment in our agroforestry faming programme to positive environmental impact , and finished the year in a very stable position.

As of Nov 2020 we are supporting clean water and sustainable farming, for nutrition and livelihood, changing the lives of thousands of people in a sustainable way. Our programme covers a full suite of life giving initiatives to regenerate communities and land working in conjunction with many trusted partners in the following areas:

Clean Water . Sustainable Farming . Livelihood . Training & Education . Bee Framing . Carbon Life Balancing

Details and impact of our programme in over 50 villages in South East Sierra Leone can be found on the website roryswell.org

It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statements below.
