2024 ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE PARISH OF WINKFIELD, CRANBOURNE & CHAVEY DOWN

BACKGROUND:

The Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down PCC has the prime responsibility of promoting the whole mission of the church(es); pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical requirements. Any PCC is an unusual committee in that it is, within the church, supposed to be concerned with the practical, day by day and routine ‘housekeeping’ that is required to keep a large organisation going. It is however also supposed to be an outward looking organisation, always seeking the lost, the lonely and those outside of the church. We endeavour to try to do both, it is a challenge and at times hard and painful work but it is always worth doing.

The PCC also has maintenance responsibilities for the church, hall and grounds of St Martin’s, Church Road, Chavey Down; the church and churchyard of St Mary’s, Church Road, Winkfield; and the church, churchyard, hall and grounds of St Peter’s, Hatchet Lane, Cranbourne.

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down PCC is a charity excepted from registration with the Charity Commission.

Membership: Members of the PCC are ex-officio, co-opted, or elected by the Annual Parochial Church meeting (APCM).

Ex Officio Membership of Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down PCC:

Hon Secretary: Penny Stringer (co-opted)

Hon Treasurer: Colin Yates

Deputy Treasurer: Donald Smith

Committees: The PCC operates through a number of committees:

The Standing Committee is the only committee required by law. It consists of the Incumbent, Wardens and Deputy Wardens, Treasurer and Secretary. It usually meets before each PCC meeting.

The Ministry Team which meets to organise Sunday and weekday services, the ministers’ rota and other ministry events.

The Fabric Committees for St Martin’s, St Mary’s & St Peter’s individually co-ordinate the Quinquennial works and other issues relating to the fabric of each church.

The ‘Friends of St Mary’s Winkfield’ is a registered Charity (1162342), and all fundraising is for the maintenance and preservation of St Mary’s church and its resources.

The Friends Committee for St Martin’s. All adult members of St Martin’s are regarded as “Friends” and the Committee meet on their behalf regularly.

The furnishings of St Mary’s are looked after by the St Mary’s Women’s Guild which undertakes many social and fund-raising activities throughout the year.

We still hope to produce a combined Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish Magazine , and work is ongoing to achieve this.

ELECTORAL ROLL OFFICER’S REPORT

The total on our Electoral Roll is now 236 compared to last year’s figure of 231. Of these 236, 145 are resident in the parish and 91 are non-resident, 79 are male and 157 are female.

The split between our three churches is as follows:- 38 are members of St. Martin’s, 167 St. Mary’s and 31 St. Peter’s.

Further applications may be expected during the coming year, and we aim to encourage those who apply to go on the Roll to take an active part in our three churches, both practically and financially. Marian Stevens, Electoral Roll Officer.

REVIEW OF THE PCC YEAR

The PCC met four times during the year working alongside the Standing Committee, the Fabric Team, the Finance sub-committee, and the Ministry Team. A wide range of subjects were discussed including:

Many thanks go to all who have attended the PCC meetings and for their commitment to the work of the churches.

PARISH FINANCIAL REVIEWS:

In 2023, we continued our financial recovery plan. Despite the on-going challenges in the wider economy, we focused on building our cash reserves, as the church’s financial reserves are still ‘a work in progress’, but we can see some green shoots of recovery. The financial priorities for the year were to pay our Parish Share in full and build our financial reserves.

As part of Financial Recovery Plan, regular giving by parishioners is essential to our success and since we launched the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) this has enabled monthly donations by direct debit and we have encouraged all our regular donors to sign up to the Diocese wide scheme - giving us the opportunity to maximise the donations with the immediate collection of the gift aid as well as giving donors the option to future proof against inflation. During 2023, PGS giving has now become our biggest source of donations.

I would like to give a special mention to our generous church members, who continue to give valuable financial and wider support with the running of our churches and halls. In the year, income increased from regular giving, and we continued our fundraising efforts, by increasing our overall reserves by over £5,000 - thank you and well done to all our Parishioners and Friends!

At St Martin’s Hall, we have now signed a lease agreement with Puddleduck Nursery school and this secures the Hall’s future and allows us to invest in the facilities and grow for the future. The hall is now

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 3

also hosting a weekly Table Tennis group. We also held a very successful community event at St Martin’s to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles and continued with the village lottery.

During the year at St Mary’s, we had another successful and busy year with Coronation events, music concerts and the Christmas Tree festival becoming regular fixtures. Peter’s. As we look ahead at St Mary’s, the next project in the building will be the electrical systems supported by the Friends of Mary’s Winkfield who have actively organised new events and concerts.

It was another busy year at St Peter’s with the usual programme of annual events including another successful Arts Week. We have also been receiving regular card donations from the fixed giving terminal, having rolled out a similar device at St Mary’s last year. In the coming year we expect to utilise reserves to cover building repairs.

The parish share continues to be our biggest cost currently, being over £1,750 a week that we pay to the Diocese for our contribution. Insurance costs have increased in line with inflation.

Energy costs remain high and look to be high into the future, therefore, we are always looking at ways to reduce usage and improve the buildings, but this will require some investment and fundraising.

We continue to receive generous donations for the restoration of our buildings and other on-going funds, however, the General fund has come under pressure in the last few years, and we should not just focus on specific projects but fundraise for the ongoing weekly service costs of the church, which increased significantly in the year.

Overall, the Parish has finished the year by paying 100% of our Parish Share and looking ahead we must build our cash reserves and general fund, as we will face the same financial challenges the coming year and in 2024, we aim to make another full remittance to the Deanery whilst managing inflationary cost increases.

I would like to remind everyone that we receive no funding from the Diocese or Government and whilst we have so many members giving regularly and generously and we must act decisively this year by continuing our Fundraising efforts and actively growing our congregations, with the aim of building our financial reserves, this will allow for positive actions that will deliver the rewards we can all share in the future.

Colin Yates

Hon. Treasurer

INTERIM MINISTER’S REPORT

Happy Easter! I am grateful to God as we complete another year as a Parish albeit under much pressure. We are also approaching the end of our second Interim Ministry at the end of December. I am so grateful for the support that you have given to me as Interim Minister in words of encouragement and stepping up to take responsibility for tasks that need doing to keep our Parish open for the preaching and teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As spiritual leader, I have done my best under God’s grace to guide our congregations in the faith journey in order to deepen our relationship with God and with one another.

Thank you to those of you who have persevered in the PCC, in the congregational teams, in the music and choir teams, as sides people, ushers, tea and coffee makers, Guild and flower teams, the Parish Magazine team and all contributors and distributors. Others of you have undertaken to be in the Friends of St. Peter’s, St. Martins and St. Mary’s, while others as school governors and trustees of various schools and Winkfield Trusts. You have enabled the Parish of Winkfield Cranbourne and Chavey Down to accomplish

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 4

much in your endeavours. Financially we are at a better place due to the hard work of the treasurers and the PCC. We still need to encourage all of us to sign up to the Parish Giving Scheme.

All this has involved a huge amount of work, creativity, and commitment from many of you. I want to thank the PCC for their work on a whole range of other behind-the-scenes tasks. At the risk of forgetting some notables let me make a special note of Colin and Michael in putting together all the permissions and legalities with the Puddle Duck nursery that uses our hall. In addition to working on the fabric of St Martins, Michael teamed up with Paul Jackson to establish a weekly Parish Table Tennis club. Not to forget Amanda Carter who quietly organises the hall bookings.

Our school’s engagement have carried on with Sharon as one of the governors at Winkfield St. Mary’s Primary, while Lesley and John crank up the fortnightly assemblies. I am still enamoured by the outreach potential of the Christmas tree festival, now in its third year as well as all the activities during the Arts Week. Last but not least, without Andrea, Penny, Anne and the choir’s hard work, worship at St. Peter’s would have been much the poorer.

We have also maintained a hard-working office administrator who works 15 hours a week. Stephanie has refreshed our website and social media pages aside from ensuring the office runs efficiently by organising and coordination activities like weddings, funerals, baptisms, confirmations, purchases, notices and leafletting. Our life events are now almost fully digitised.

Interim Ministry Evaluation.

Many of you will be aware that I have completed an evaluation for our two interim periods in our Parish. The report is currently with the Archdeacon and Parish Development Advisor and will be released soon for discussion within the Parish and PCC. Hopefully the report informs and influences positively our next move as a Parish. I am hoping that in the next few months we will be able to advertise for an Incumbent or more i.e. permanent ministers. At the moment we have just the Authorised Lay Minister and myself in the ministry team.

Thanks once again to the ministry team – John Kimbel who continues his ministry diligently, Dave Cappleman who has since moved away, Jennifer Jones who stepped down at the beginning of last year, Pepi Gbadebo who has now stepped down due to personal circumstances and Tracy Barnard who has now stepped up to be considered for Authorised Lay Ministry.

I must acknowledge support from my deanery colleagues especially Roy Burgess who steps up at every hour of our need. At the recent bereavement at Winkfield St. Mary’s School, both he and the Revd. Garth Morley of St. Michael Easthampstead were an enormous support.

As we discussed at the Retreat, my hope is that in our ongoing journey we will be confident to declare that:

“Our Parish is a place of active and engaged Christian witness, set at the very heart of Winkfield and Ascot. We have a history stretching back nearly 900 years. We seek to be engaged disciples of Christ, maturing individually and as congregations through sincere worship, learning and telling and sharing the Gospel in various ways with our families, friends, and neighbours in our communities. In effect our parish is growing in leaps and bounds in the knowledge of God and love of our neighbours near and far.”[1]

Prayer.

I believe that Public and private Prayer, the core to our navigation through this life and the engine of the church will lead us in this direction. Tuesday and Wednesday Zoom offerings for morning and evening are sparsely attended. I am grateful for all who participate in leading, chanting and intercession.

1 Aspirational statement drawn from a variety of sources for the Parish Retreat discussions in 2023. Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 5

Every 1[st] and 3[rd] Tuesday of the month we meet physically at St. Martins Church for intercessions for the Parish. My hope is that many more will join us, especially during Lent and Advent. Fervent prayer will secure God’s leading for the future of the Parish. Prayer trees have been provided in the churches as a resource for prayer.

Parish Mission

Our Parish mission remains, “To work together to share God’s Love within the community around us. ” It requires much wider acceptance and action so everyone understands what we are trying to do.

It has been a delight to see the PCC take at least one CPAS PCC Tonight and the individual online Safeguarding courses. We then adapted a Code of Conduct after the training. Together, we brought the Parish together for a Retreat on two occasions, at which crucial issues concerning our future were discussed. These are as follows:

Bible Discussions.

For those who make time for a variety of Bible studies and discussions online or otherwise, we have continued to whet our appetites for the scriptures and prayer and equipping ourselves to be witnesses to Christ’s reconciling love in our community.

There are two Bible studies running in the Parish, one on Fridays run by Cynthia Lane, and Still Waters on alternate Wednesdays led by Pepi and myself. During Advent and Lent we have continued discussions around historical religious paintings. It remains the privilege of all of us in

leadership to encourage growth and maturity in our Baptismal promises, through these disciplines.

I am heartened by those of you who are discovering your gifts, talents and skills and joining with others who are already using theirs. Friendly Faces has welcomed Lisa Vasselli as another of our Pastoral Visitors. Baptism and confirmation preparations continue as we all become lifelong apprentices of Jesus. Every year we have baptisms plus at least three confirmation candidates. Hearing testimonies of people hearing God speaking to them is encouraging.

Services

Our services have worryingly continued with slow growth. I try to utilize the time given for meaningful prayer and some Bible exposition. I will continue to shape them to see how better to utilize the hour. I think an hour a week does not provide the diet needed by a Christian to grow and mature into fullness of our baptism vows.

Intergenerational Church ( IG).

It is encouraging to see how Family Praise and Crafty Church services are incorporating children and young people to take part in scripture reading and prayer. This is in sync with Deanery and Diocese Intergenerational church (IG) and Disciples Together ideas.

The purpose of IG is that every person grows deeper in their faith, spirituality and lived life as a follower of Jesus. IG recognises that all ages need all other ages in the cultivating, nurturing and growing process. How are children and young people present and participating in the life, mission and ministry of our parish? We are ahead of just a mingling of adults, children and young people coming together to share food, play

games, tell and listen to stories.

The morning and afternoon craft and cafe churches are designed in this direction. At the same time, we have completed an application for a Families’ and Children’s Worker and wait to see the Diocese’s response.

Paul’s Prayer for us

I ask the Father in his great glory to give you the power to be strong in spirit. I pray that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith. I pray that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love. I pray that you can understand how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God.

With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of. To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.

Patrick Mukholi, Interim Minister Eastertide 2024

WARDENS’ REPORTS:

ST MARY’S CHURCH

Services:

0800 Holy Communion

This service continues on 2[nd] and 4[th] Sundays. The regular congregants rarely miss a service and are very grateful that the services were re-instated. There are additional attendees at some of the services.

Family Communion, Holy Communion, Choral Matins and Crafty Choral Matins

These services have all continued during the year. The children once again, at Family Communion, usually take the elements to the altar and read prayers or poems at Crafty Choral Matins.

Family Matins, Family Praise and Crafty Church.

All these services continue to work well. The children tell the story of the theme of the day at Family Matins. They read the bible passages and prayers at all three services. They also play the piano and violin at many of the FP and CC services.

Baptism and Wedding Preparation Sessions

One couple attended the official wedding preparation session but there have been two additional sessions. Baptism sessions continued throughout the year. Margaret Smith has set up for these sessions and we do thank her.

Baptisms

These continue to take place after Family Communion on the first Sunday of the month. There were 16 Baptisms during the year.

Confirmation Service

A confirmation service was held at St Mary’s during the summer with 10 members of the Parish being confirmed. The eleventh member who attended the preparation classes was confirmed at Reading Cathedral later in the year.

Churchyard

The Community Pay Back Team continues to work well and the churchyard looks well cared for. The

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

gardener tends the front of the churchyard twice a month and also the Memorial Garden. These two tasks are paid by members of the Parish. Recently, however, some garden waste has been placed at the back of the church. More notices are needed and will be provided.

Church Committee

The committee meets when necessary. The new lawn mower, generously donated by a congregant, has been a great asset. The new notice board suggested during a Church inspection was researched and installed, in the porch, by Tony Bish. We are very grateful to Tony and to FOSMW who paid for the item.

John Kimbell

John prepares and leads our Choral Matins services each month. After the first successful Crafty Choral Matins on a 5[th] Sunday, all 5[th] Sunday services are now Crafty Choral Matins commencing at 1000. They follow the theme of the previous Sunday’s Crafty Church story and the children read some of the prayers and poems.

St Mary's Sidemen

We are extremely grateful to Sharon Cakebread, Jonathan Hemsley, Margaret-Anne Hodson, Richard Loveys and George McBride who are sidemen at our services.

Bell Ringers – Tower and Hand Bell

We are most fortunate to have both Tower and Hand Bell Ringers. To hear the Tower bells every Sunday as one approaches church is most welcoming. The Hand Bell Ringers ring at all Fifth Sunday services and special events. Our thanks to them all.

St Mary’s Choir

Thanks must be extended to the choir members who have sung at all Sunday services and special services throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have extra singers who attend and sing at many of our services. They and our own choristers provided the choir for the Music and Merriment concert – The Winkfield Chorale.

Events during 2023.

We held a special Family Matins service to celebrate the coronation of King Charles. There was a power point presentation showing Monarchs from the Norman Dynasty. The children read a bible passage and a poem for each of the monarchs represented. Henry Smith, our organist, provided suitable music to accompany this service. This was followed by a fayre in the church grounds. It was very successful particularly the parachuting teddy bears. This was organised by the Bell Tower ringers. It was £2 a go and many children entered several times. The HODS exhibition days took place in September. October was Harvest Festival which followed the Harvest Supper. This year the Guild invited all the residents of Popels Hall to attend. They had a table to themselves and during the evening celebrated Audrey’s de Verinne’s 96[th] birthday. December provided the Music and Merriment concert and the 3[rd] Christmas Tree Festival. This year several of the local businesses sponsored a tree.

Carols and Candlelight

Two services again this year all very well attended.

Winkfield St Mary’s School

John Kimbell, Patrick Mukholi and Lesley Philpot continue to visit the school and take assemblies every fortnight. It is working well. The school returned to the church for their Harvest and Christmas services in 2023.

Easter 2024

Winkfield St Mary’s School attended for their Easter service on 27 March. This was very well attended and

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 8

a great joy for all.

Holy Communion at 0800 on Easter Sunday was led by Patrick. The regular congregants and several visitors came to the service.

Family Communion at 1000 on Easter Sunday was led by the Rev. Nicholas Cheeseman. It was an excellent service and we are very grateful to Nicholas for agreeing to visit. Once again the regular congregants attended as did several visitors.

Lesley Philpot Parish Church Warden

ST PETERS CHURCH

Services

On Christmas Eve, the family aernoon Carols and Candlelight and evening Holy Communion services were very well aended. Approximately 200 adults and children in total were welcomed to these services and their donaons were a great help for us. We also enjoyed well aended services at Candlemas and Easter, and are delighted to see some new faces becoming familiar as they aend on a more regular basis.

Help for a Ukraine School in Uman

Monetary donations, given in place of Christmas cards sent to each other at St Peter’s, were donated to a school in Ukraine. These were used by Razom Bracknell to purchase items much needed by the school, such as stationery, art/craft materials and books, and made their way by lorry transport to Ukraine.

Large Shed Theft

The large shed was broken into in mid-May when two mowers and a strimmer were stolen. Ecclesiascal Insurers seled our claim for these items and increased security of a metal grille was installed.

Dona Credit/Debit Card Machine

The machine was installed in September, situated by the main door. Income from Arts Week in October and Christmas services proved a great help with donaons.

Arts Week

Another very successful week with music and singing, plus organ and art presentaons. The church was full on both Sundays and donaon income for the week was in excess of £1,000.

Nave Roof Water Ingress

A Conservaon Accredited architect carried out an assessment on the Nave Roof in November and recommended that the roof be renewed during 2024. Quotaons have been received and charies are being contacted to support this very large project.

New Lapel and Hand-Held Microphones

was considered extremely important to install new ones prior to the Christmas services. Radio mics were quickly installed, and the sound quality is greatly improved.

Ongoing Fundraising

plants, planters and hanging baskets which have brightened up gardens over the spring and summer. Penny has also connued to make her very tasty jams and marmalades, and both she and Andrea are very grateful for the support received from everyone. A Win-Win situaon for all!

Health and Safety

General risk assessments and Fire Risk assessments have been reviewed and updated at St Peter’s. Any concerns are raised with the church warden and appropriate action is taken. Fire safety is raised before each of the Arts week events so that everyone is aware of the exit points, and the Christmas candle safety will be discussed again by the team.

Anne Crewe Parish Church Warden

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH

Services

The communion services throughout the year have been taken by Rev Patrick Mukholi and our Morning Prayer services led by Dave Cappleman and John Kimbell. At the end of 2023 Dave moved out of the area and since then the service on the 1[st] Sunday of the month has been led by members of the St Martin’s congregation. Our thanks to all those who have led a service during the year.

Also, huge thanks to our musicians who have played and sang every week to support the services at St. Martin's. Almost entirely voluntary effort from Paul Jackson, Josh Tuffley and Stephen Mason on organ/piano for which we're very grateful. Accompanists in particular are always short in numbers and we know this is a big obligation and responsibility to deliver well weekly, so sharing around is good. At St. Martin's, the door is wide open to anyone who would like to step up to play the organ, the super userfriendly Technics digital piano (which makes other sounds too and transposes) or perhaps a guitar or other instrument? If you would like to help, please make yourselves known and you will be made very welcome!

The Crafty Café Church began last year and has continued to be held on the first Sunday of the month. Patrick leads this informal service, and Paul Jackson has been supporting musically on the piano with simple hymns and songs. The children take turns at readings then, helped by parents, cut out and colour the figures for the craft themes of the church seasons.

Harvest

The generous gifts received during the service were donated to the Bracknell Foodbank, with the service being followed by a wonderful bring and share brunch.

Christmas Gift Service

The generosity of the congregation was demonstrated again at the Christmas gift service with toys being donated to Bracknell social services for them to distribute and food items going to the Bracknell foodbank.

Messiah 'Reflections'

Patrick came up with the idea, Paul assembled 8 singers mostly from and connected to our parish, and the whole of Handel's Masterpiece was stunningly delivered in 3 performances, each one interspersed with spoken prayer and reflections from Patrick. A small event in terms of numbers attending, but very much appreciated by all who supported and took part. There is definite potential to grow and seek further collaboration opportunities.

King’s Coronation

A wonderful bring and share lunch was held in May to celebrate the King’s Coronation, well attended by members of the parish congregation and local residents, and funded by donations from local businesses and a BBQ. Surplus funds were donated to the hall maintenance.

Hall

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 10

Ongoing maintenance of the hall continues, we are in the process of agreeing a date to have the hall floor sanded and sealed. There have been further issues with the drains, this appears to be linked to increased use of the facilities. Following requests for additional toilet and kitchen facilities to be available without having to interrupt the nursery, we are looking at ways to reallocate some of the space between the hall and the church, this will inevitably mean that we need to be more economical with the storage space that will remain. Please contact a member of the PCC for more details, when we have a viable proposal it will be published in the church for review.

We continue to seek new users for the hall, in addition to the nursery’s use during the day. At the moment there are occasional meetings on a Monday, the table tennis club meet on Thursday evenings and the Guides meet on Friday evenings.

Defibrillator

At the end of 2023 we secured funding to buy and install a defibrillator on the outside wall of the hall, it is fully commissioned and available for use if needed. We are in the process of arranging an official unveiling, it is hoped that this will provide valuable publicity for the parish.

Car Parking

There was significant use of the car park over the Christmas holiday period, with a number of vehicles not moving for several days, and although this has reduced, we continue to monitor the situation and use cones and signs to indicate when we need to use the car park. However there are still some residents who persistently use the car park.

Lottery

Ticket sales for the 2023/2024 Lottery are similar to last year. The lottery will still make a profit and we will continue to promote new ticket sales.

Nursery

A long-term contract for the use of the hall has been agreed with the nursery, which has now been taken over by a larger company. However we will continue to work with the new management team to ensure the best outcome for the Hall and its continued availability for the local community.

CCTV

A second camera has been added to the CCTV system, which covers the Defibrillator and the external door near the office. This was funded as part of the defibrillator grant.

Friends of St Martin’s

This year as well as supporting our sponsored child Jose who lives in Nicaragua and who is now 13 years of age, the Friends have purchased a new flag for our flagpole and made a donation of £50 to the memorial fund for Mary Knight and Ruth Timbrell.

Payback Team

The Reading Community Payback team (offenders serving a community sentence) come to St Martin’s once a month and have made a big difference by clearing the car park, strimming the grass and generally tidying up all round . It has never looked so tidy, and they are now working to clear the Memorial Garden which has been a huge problem: once cleared it should be easier to keep it tidy.

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 11

Christmas at St Martin’s

Despite additional advertising of this year’s service schedule, congregation numbers on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were lower than last year, though it is not clear why this was. Unfortunately, the village carol service was cancelled at short notice, and more will need to be done in 2024 to ensure that it goes ahead.

Throughout the Christmas period the church was well decorated thanks to our flower team, with Christmas trees both inside and outside the church.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who again stepped up to the challenges to deliver wonderful Christmas services for everyone.

WC&CD Table Tennis Club

The table tennis club is now well established on a Thursday night in St Martin’s Hall, members pay £2.50 per session (the first trial session is free) and we average 10 – 12 players per week, drawn from all ages across the whole parish. Set up as essentially an outreach programme by the parish we welcome players of all

abilities. The club funds have been used to purchase a second table, a donation made to the defibrillator fund and they pay for the use of the hall. The club is looking to either extend their sessions to 9pm or purchasing another table (maybe both if there is sufficient demand).

Memorial stain glass panels

Memorial Windows remembering two beloved parishioners and active members of our local community - Mary Knight and Ruth Timbrell. We are looking to commission two stain glass panels to be hung on two of the road-facing windows in St Martins Church, initial designs can be seen below.

Our fund-raising page is proving successful though we still require £500 to complete our target. Michael Dickinson and Margaret Smith have actively been involved with the process of meeting with Caroline Loveys who has designed two lovely stain glass panels representing both women. We are hoping to do a further fundraising drive at the APCM.

Please visit the parish website and the just giving page (see below) or alternatively donate via the Church office and label any donations for the memorial windows https://justgiving.com/campaign/memorial-ruth-and-mary

Flower Team

Our Flower Team work hard to make the Church displays look good for special occasions, whilst at other times of the year we mostly use silk flowers as the cost of fresh flowers has rocketed in price. We are very grateful to the congregation for the donations that are given towards the cost of the flowers: it is a great help.

Summary

Over the year we have kept up to date with more urgent maintenance tasks for the church and the hall – thank you to everyone who has helped out.

The church and its facilities can't operate without the support of its congregation and community, and we are very grateful to all those who work so hard behind the scenes. I apologise for not listing you all or the many jobs that you do as I know that I would miss someone!

Overall congregation numbers are slightly down on last year and volunteers are still insufficient to fill all vacancies. There is a high risk that this situation will get worse over the coming year with fewer volunteers having to take on more tasks. Our church community urgently needs to grow and renew itself, for this we need to get more people into our buildings and keep them coming back –we all have a responsibility to make this happen. From this growth we will increase our pool of volunteers who help to keep everything going and build up our income from collections which will give us the opportunity to improve our parish and the mission that it supports.

For the prosperity of St Martin’s Church in Chavey Down, finance and volunteers still remain the biggest issues, and help and support with either is greatly appreciated.

DEANERY SYNOD REPORT

There were, as usual, 3 Synod meetings during the past year, in February, July and November.

The February meeting at Easthampstead Church had three areas of special interest. The first was School Chaplaincy News, followed with Review of 2020-23 Triennium and Preview of 2023-26 Triennium.

It was agreed that Rhodi Bowen be invited to the July Synod meeting, All Soul’s South Ascot, to introduce the new Synod – Preview of 2023-26.

Rhodri suggested members should look at the end of the new triennium and decide how we got there. There were many ideas and lively discussions. All points were handed to Rhodri who produced a document covering the issues mentioned entitled BDS Looking Forward 2023-2026.

The two main headings from the July meeting were 1 Youth, children and Schools work; 2 Growing Congregations”.

These were discussed at the November meeting. Lesley Philpot Deanery Synold Rep.

INDIVIDUAL CHURCH GROUP REPORTS:

ST MARY’S CHURCH

ST MARY’S CHOIR

The choir has performed at all regular Sunday services, Harvest Evensong, the Coronation Family Matins service, two weddings and the Confirmation service.

Our extra singers have joined with us for many services during the year and we are very grateful to them. Henry Smith, our third Holloway student, has played for most of the Sunday services throughout the year. He has been exceptionally loyal and extremely helpful to us all. His voluntaries are something we look forward to at every service. During the year we have also worked with Josh Tuffley, Luke Saint and Anthony Hodson who has played for Family Matins and we thank him for his loyalty. We are very grateful to all of them.

Sadly we lost Jonthan Holl during the year. Jonathan had worked with us for many, many years not only playing for Sunday services but also additional week day services and was a great help in arranging contacts with other musicians. We shall miss him.

Lesley Philpot

FRIENDS OF ST MARY’S WINKFIELD (FOSMW)

There were two major fundraising events during 2023, the first being the Music and Merriment Concert, once again managed by Anthony Hodson, and the second was the Christmas Tree Festival, - our third, which has grown each year and in 2023 several additional local businesses became sponsors.

FOSMW has supported other Church fund raising activities by offering ticket purchasing facilities on the FOSMW website. FOSMW purchased the new notice board which can be seen in the porch - a new board having been suggested during the 2023 Church Inspection.

FOSMW continues to raise funds and plan for the Electrics project. Unfortunately, after lengthy negotiations and agreeing costs for an increased scope of works, the chosen contractor, CES Electrical withdrew at the last minute in February this year. Discussions are taking place with other contractors. Lesley Philpot - Chairman

WINKFIELD ST MARY’S WOMEN’S GUILD

The first meeting of 2023 was held in the home of one of our members. The March meeting took place at Lambrook School, following an invitation from the Archivist – our Lay Minister, John Kimbell. The Guild was welcomed in the Reception Hall of the new Queen’s Building, before moving through to the Chapel.

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 14

Following the Guild Prayer, John gave a most interesting presentation about Lambrook’s third and fourth Headmasters. This historical talk was illustrated with portrait photographs, descriptions of honours boards, commemorative panels, memorial plaques and a stained glass lancet window. These legacies were viewed in the Chapel. The afternoon ended with a delicious tea.

In April the Guild celebrated its Diamond Anniversary. Members and invited guests began the day with a service at St Mary’s church led by John Kimbell with Josh Tuffley as organist. After the service a celebratory lunch was held at Stirrups Hotel. Good wishes were received from several members who were not able to attend. In May Guild members assisted with several stalls at the Coronation Fayre in the church grounds. A very successful event.

Members visited the Foundling Museum in August which was fascinating. There was a guided tour in the morning, then lunch offsite, then members returned for the Handel display.

Judith Usher gave another of her interesting talks at the September meeting. It was called “Look up and see the ceiling of the Sist i ne Chapel in England” This, of course, referred to the English Martyrs Catholic Church in Worthing, another fascinating meeting.

Preparations for HODS days and Harvest Supper were discussed at the October meeting. John Kimbell led the Advent service at the December meeting, which again was held at the home of a member. The last event in 2023 was a Christmas lunch at the White Hart. Lesley Philpot - President .

TOWER CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Well, what a year we have had! We have been delighted to welcome new members to our band. Bradley, Jake, Anna, Rhonda and Chris have all brought lots of enthusiasm and enabled the existing band to hone their teaching skills. They are all progressing and are helping with Sunday Service ringing.

The year began with our Holy Week bowling with 12 members attending, followed a couple of weeks later by the Tower tidy up. This was well supported and we were able to clean all 4 levels of the tower and even get up onto to roof of the church to clear old leaves etc.

The big event of the year was, of course, The Coronation of King Charles III. We spent a fabulous day ringing in celebration. We had two sessions in the morning and afternoon with 24 ringers taking part. His Majesty was proud of us all! Thank you to Lyn for organising the little ringing badges.

On 14[th] May we hosted the “Teddies in the Tower” event along with the “Balls in a Bell”. The sun shone and we had a happy event after the service.

Many thanks to Jill and Phil for hosting the bells and curry evening a week later with some tasty dishes shared and plenty of banter.

We were able to ring for 2 weddings this year which were, as usual, joyous occasions and both local families.

In August Debby and Chris kindly hosted our annual ringers’ barbeque and also gave tuition in how to play croquet! Ali and Dom becoming quite competitive as the afternoon progressed.

In September we enjoyed a ringing outing to Ewelme where there were long drops and a choir in rehearsal for a wedding. It was the first time we could ring and not hear our bells at all. On to Benson and Berrick Salome, ending in Brightwell Baldwin with a cuppa in the sunshine before heading home.

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 15

A week later we hosted the Open Day which was sadly, poorly attended although the following day was Bell Sunday and the family mattins was fun.

October saw the Harvest Supper and thanks to Jill and Phil for representing the bell ringers this year. The firework evening was, thankfully dry after days of rain and it was lovely to see the ringers ‘sparkling’.

The Music and Merriment concert was most enjoyable with an outstanding handbell performance. Congratulations to all.

Thank you to all the ringers who helped to decorate the church for the Christmas Tree festival. The church looked amazing and was admired by many, many people over the festive season.

Our thanks go to Sue Woods for organising our annual Christmas dinner and for the menu card creativity. It was a lovely evening at the White Hart.

2024 was ‘rung in’ in style thanks to all those who came along to help make a merry noise for the neighbours.

The year ended with Trevor’s fabulous quiz evening. It wouldn’t be the same without you and you are becoming quite a local celebrity! Thanks also to Jill for organising all the food after a very busy day handbell ringing, to Sue W for supporting in the kitchen and to Ally and family for keeping score and the loan of the PA system. A great team effort that raised £1048!!

I will end by thanking all of you for your time, effort and dedication in keeping the bells ringing at St Mary’s and for keeping the flag flying, both metaphorically and literally! You all play a very important part in the life of the band.

Tony Bish - Tower Captain

ST MARY’S HAND BELL RINGERS REPORT

2023 was another busy year for the hand bell ringers team!

In October we celebrated in style with a collective 300[th] birthday celebration – three of the ringers were 70 years old last year and an ex-ringer was 90 years old. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and an enormous cake.

The Music and Merriment concert in December was, as usual, a huge success and the hand bells were delighted to be a part of it; we have already started to plan for this year’s concert . We enjoyed a lovely Christmas meal together at The White Hart – we are a sociable lot!

Our AGM in March, following the usual business, allowed us to plan our social activities for the year. And what a year we have had!

During Holy week when we are not permitted to ring, all the bell ringers and partners enjoyed an evening of tenpin bowling and the same will happen again this year.

On Easter morning we will be performing as part of the Easter service which is always a privilege for such an important occasion.

As well as our continuing commitment to ringing on the 5[th] Sundays we also perform regularly for special events and services which we thoroughly enjoy.

Our quiz night in February was a huge success with every table booked! We would have struggled to

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 16

accommodate any more teams. As always we are extremely grateful to the the community for their support at this event which raised a substantial amount of money for the church’s electric fund ready for the work to commence sometime soon.

We would love to recruit more members so that we can ring a wider variety of pieces so do please come along and have a go – you will be warmly welcomed! The ability to count (mostly just to 4) is really all that you need!!!

As always my thanks to the team for their continued commitment, time, hard work and friendship. We continue to improve year on year.

Jill Glennerster - Hand Bell Director

ST PETER’S CHURCH

St Peter’s Church Choir

Our lovely choir at St Peters has continued to grow, and rose to the challenge of two Bob Chilcott carols at Christmas. It sounded really beautiful alongside the harmonies of the traditional carols, especially on Christmas Eve.

We have continued to learn and sing new traditional and modern hymns and gradually introducing them into services. We have been meeting during winter at my house, but will return to church for choir practices during the lighter ,warmer evenings.

We are always looking for new members to join us for fellowship and singing as regular singers or singing for special services . You will always receive a warm welcome so please come along.

Andrea Stephens - Musical Director for St Peters

GENERAL PARISH REPORTS:

ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT – CHURCH OFFICE

The church office based in St Martin’s Church operates 9.30am to 12.30pm, Tuesday & Friday open to visitors and remotely Monday, Wednesday & Thursday.

I have been the parish administrator since October 2021 and have been working in co-operation with the Interim Minister, the Parish Wardens and other parish officers. I have maintained the administrator post, managing the administration relating specifically to the three Parish churches; their buildings, two churchyards, congregation members, general events and the Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down community at large.

As part of the general day-to-day activities, I have been responsible for administrating:

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 17

In addition to the above activities, I created and maintain Facebook pages for St Peter’s & St Martin’s Churches and a Parish Facebook Group for the Parish of Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down community to communicate and includes daily bible readings, the weekly service schedule and seasonal services. I create marketing materials for promoting our special services; on the web, for circulation by hand and sharing with other websites.

During the quiet periods since June 2023; I created an electronic Banns, Wedding, Christening & Confirmation Registers database for St Martin’s to facilitate faster searches. I then began duplicating this database for St Peter’s to also include the Burial and Churchyard Registers database and creating an electronic map for St Peter’s Churchyard for fast and efficient searches, funeral planning and families to locate distant relatives. St Peter’s Registers are still ongoing and will be followed by St Mary’s Registers. I am currently creating a database to simplify the billing, invoicing and reporting process across the Parish. Stephanie Lund - Church Administrator

FRIDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY GROUP

We are a group of 8 - 10 people who meet in each other’s homes for 2 hours, on Friday mornings, from 10:15 – 12:15p.m. This gives us time to enjoy a brief session of prayer and worship, before studying scripture, and then finishing with coffee and chat.

“Here is your God!” Isaiah 40:9

Having recently studied selected passages in a highlights tour of Isaiah (by Tim Chester), we remind ourselves that no person or thing can be compared to God. He is almighty and all powerful; but even so, He cares for us personally. It is a joy to be in the Word and in fellowship each week to remind ourselves of this.

Other topics over the last year have included Mark’s Gospel -a read through from the Bible; 2 short study guides from York Courses - “Glimpses of God ” where we looked at a selection of passages from both the OT and NT chosen to give us strength and encouragement, post pandemic. Mentioned within, we were introduced to Brother Lawrence’s book, “Practising the Presence of God” which inspired ALL of us to purchase our own copy in the hope of cultivating a sense of God’s constant presence.

“You can be Serious” is this year’s Lent study, meeting Jesus afresh in John’s Gospel.

Between studies we have enjoyed a Movie Morning , watching a feature length film, “The Case for Christ” based on a true story of an atheist man (Lee Strobel) who, in his role as a journalist, tries to disprove the claims of Christianity in order to save his crumbling marriage against his wife’s growing faith. The scriptures and arguments presented were compelling and served to strengthen our own belief and faith in the gospel message of Jesus Christ, as it eventually did for Lee Strobel.

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 18

And we continue to take every opportunity we can to celebrate each other - as our birthdays present themselves, with either a bring-and-share lunch or we go out for a meal!

If anyone is interested in joining us on a Friday morning, please call 07752349909. Cynthia Lane

STILL WATERS FELLOWSHIP GROUP

“Peace be to you and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.” Ephesians 6:23

Our Still Waters group continues to run on Zoom on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month between 11.00am and 12noon, apart from during the Lent and Advent periods. We are led by our minister Patrick Mukholi who has a very comprehensive knowledge of the Holy Bible and we all learn a lot through his teaching skills. On occasions Pepi Gbadebo takes the helm and we are very grateful to her for her ability to do that.

We are currently studying Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Written by the apostle Paul in approximately 6061 AD while in prison in Rome, Ephesians is considered to be the crown jewel of Paul’s writing: it is succinct, thorough and transformative. As we go through this rich and beautiful letter, among the many themes presented, we are focusing on our spiritual identity and how it is lived out.

As a group we are fairly small in number, but we are always ready to welcome others to join us. You can find logging on details of our group on the church website or you can ring me for further information on 01344 884498.

WINKFIELD PARISH NEWS

The Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish Magazine is a monthly magazine and is published on the Web (see https://fosmw.com/parishmag/) on the second last Sunday of each month. Some paper copies are available in our three churches on the last Sunday of each month.

There was a special edition in May 2023 when we celebrated the coronation of King Charles III, and in October 2023, when we published the 100th edition of the magazine under its current editorial regime.

The content of the magazine is intended to be of general parish interest, with articles, reports and details of coming events, when available, coming from all three churches. The centre pages give details of all church services taking place in the next month and we often publish fliers for events taking place in the parish and surrounding districts.

Preparing the Winkfield Parish News is a parish activity. The PCC is responsible for it, led by Revd Patrick Mukholi. It is not affiliated in any way to the Friends of St Mary's Winkfield (nor paid for by them), although it is supported free of charge on the Friends' website. Preparation of the News is a 100% voluntary activity and there is no regular source of income. The outgoings have been paid for by the PCC, and this makes it a truly Parish publication. However, the Winkfield Parish News is grateful to the Mercers Company of the City of London, which has, for the last two years, provided a financial grant direct to the PCC in recognition of the editors' work in publishing the magazine, and this funds the printing of paper copies.

Ideally, the magazine would be printed in paper form, and distributed by volunteers to large numbers of

Winkfield, Cranbourne & Chavey Down Parish APCM report 2020

Annual Reports:2024: page 19

people in our Parish, going to an audience broader than our regular Sunday church attendees. When this was possible, pre-Covid, subscribers provided funds to the PCC that covered the cost of printed production. The size of this distribution was able to attract paying advertisers. However, that became impossible to maintain during Covid, and since then the PCC has not been able to find a commercially viable formula to restart physical production and distribution, that would be supported by a suitably large advertising income.

Nevertheless, the editorial team try to maintain a useful standard of local reporting, with articles, including a leading article provided, most months, by Revd. Patrick Mukholi, and, alternatively, by a selected or locally written article, deemed to be uplifting for our parishioners. The web format allows us to have graphics and pictures in colour, which livens up the mag a lot.

The contents are varied, and include reports of church activities around the Parish, including Birth, Marriage and Funerals reporting from the registers. In addition, we publish articles, many of which are written by local people, that will be interesting and possibly even useful or amusing, many on non-churchrelated matters. The magazine always concludes with a puzzle section, and a Picture Parable page (intended for children, but, we suspect, read by a much broader age-group).

The web distribution is supported by a parish mag web page, www.fosmw.com/parishmag/ and the Parish Website https://www.winkfieldandcranbourne.org.uk/welcome.htm has a link to this web page right at the very top of the welcome page. When you reach the parish mag web page, you can use the buttons and links to reach the not only the current Parish Mag, but also the more-than-a hundred editions over the last ten years. Take ‘a trip down memory lane’!!

Easy access can also be made by googling ‘Friends Winkfield’ to reach the website www.fosmw.com (we pronounce it ‘FOSM W dot com’) of the Friends of St Mary’s Winkfield, the hosts of the parish mag pages: from there you can find direct links to the current and immediate-past editions of the Parish Magazine, as well as links to the Parish website and the other useful web pages.

We are deeply grateful to the many people who provide articles and other material to fill the parish mag’s page, and particularly mention Rev’d Patrick Mukholi, Stephanie Lund, Lesley Philpot and Jill Glennerster as our faithful month-by-month sources of valuable and interesting material. We need more people like them, now!

We would also like to see more and people accessing and reading the parish mag – that would help convince us that all the effort is worthwhile!

The editors are always delighted to welcome new contributors, particularly from our church communities. If interested, please contact the editors at info@fosmw.com
