Trustee’s Report
For the period 1[st] January 2024 to 31[st] December 2024
The CIO has a principal objective to advance the education of the public in the subject or music and, in particular, the advancement of Brass Band Music.
The CIO was formed to take over, develop and perpetuate, the activities formerly carried on by Besses o’ th’ Barn Band Limited, a private limited company, and, Besses of the Barn Band, an unincorporated association of its members, which between them operated one of the world’s oldest brass bands.
The CIO has no employees and is run on a day to day basis by a voluntary operating committee which reports to the CIO’s charity trustees. The band’s Musical Director receives an allowance from the band towards his/her costs in attending to conduct the band’s rehearsal and musical engagements.
The CIO applied for, and has been formally recognised as having charitable status with HMRC.

Membership of the CIO
Membership of the CIO is open to anyone who is interested in furthering its purpose and who. By applying for membership, has indicated his or her agreement to become a member and acceptance of the duties of members which are, in summary, to:
Exercise his/her powers as a member of the CIO in the way he/she decides, in good faith, would most likely further the purpose of the CIO; and
Pay reasonable membership fees to the CIO.
Levels of membership fees are proposed by the Trustees and agreed by the members in the Annual General Meeting (the “AGM”).
Membership of the CIO cannot be transferred to anyone else. Membership of the CIO comes to an end if:
The member dies; or The member sends a notice of resignation to the Chairman or Trustees; or Any sum of money owed by the member to the CIO is not paid in full within six months of its falling due; or
The Trustees decide that it is in the best interest of the CIO that the member in question should be removed from the membership and the Trustees pass a resolution to that effect.
If the CIO is wound up its members have no liability to contribute to its assets and have no personal liability for settling its debts and liabilities. Subject to payment of all CIO debts, an assets remaining must be used for charitable purposes the same as, or similar to, those of the CIO and will not be distributed to members.

Financial Results for the period.
The accounting and reporting requirements in the Charities Act 2011 allow CIO’s with a gross income not in excess of £250,000 in a year to prepare their accounts on the receipts and payments basis. The trustees have elected to do this and the CIO is not obliged to use the accruals basis of accounting, nor apply the Charities SORP. As permitted, the financial statements therefore consist of:
A receipts and payment account; and A statement of assets and liabilities.
The following accounts show the current state of the CIO’s finances which the trustees consider satisfactory. The CIO generated no surplus and again made a loss.
