The Blolechnology and Medicine Education Trust is a Registered Charity, No.
1165469. The Trvst becarne an incorporaled UK charity on 8th August 2016. adopting
a Memorandurn and Articles as its governing documents. 11 acquired Unitad Stat8S
501lcP status Ihiou9h the Klng Baudouln Foundation In Septeml)er 2016.
The Tnjst was established to enhance publi¢ understanding 8tK)Ut the pt)wer of
biotechnology, Itfe s¢len¢e8, emerglng technology and high tech ervJineering to
8nhan¢e people's Ilves. The prlnclpal objectlves of the Trust are lo raise funds to
SUPPOrt the actlvltles Ilke What19Biotechnology.org {WiBI. a non-profit website that
provides onling educational resources about rocenl advances in biom6dic81 science
for the benèfit of the general public, heafthcare workers and other key stskeholders. It
Is also supporting the developmenl of free educational activities to en¢our8ge
students to pursue careers in the life xience. technology and hlgh tech engineerfng
se¢tors.

The Board of Trustees, which meets as ￿qUI￿d, is responsible for overall policy,
strategic direction 8nd management of the Trust. In line with recommend8d practlce,
Trustee appolntments are tim8 limited to three years altt)ough up to thrèe consecutlve
temis may be served (then subject to a break of al least one year).
In seeking new Trustees, consideration is given to the balan(t of skills, experience
and knowledge that the Trust requires. New Tru5tee5 are made aware of their
stalutory dulles a6 Trustees and of thg nged to wmply with relevant Charity
Commission guidancè. Th8y are also invited to find out about the Trust and the work
of the Board by talking lo and working closely with other Truste85 and are strongly
encouraged to undertake approprlats training when they loin, and throughout thelr
mg on the Board.

2.2. An inwdeplh Intervlew wlth Professor Simon Gordon was Post￿ on lh8 websit8 Sn
October 2024. In his interniew. Gordon talks about his earty Ilfe in South Africa and
how h8 became interested In macrophages while a d￿tOr&I student al the
Rockefeller Unlversity In N8w yo￿. whlch he contlnued to Invesllgate when h8 101r￿d
the Dunn School of PaltrK*logy at Oxford Unlverslty. HIS Intenibew hlghllghts the
challenge8 of research In the 8rea and the many roles macrophages play In the body
including In the d8velopment of cancer. Gordon also talks about how he gol Involved

infancy, 3D genomics is already offering new insights into cancer and other complex
diseases like multlple sclerosls and rheumatoid arthritis, thereby opening up Fjotential
rffiv therap8Uti¢ larggts 8nd the development of more effective and personalised
medicSne. It has also shown strong pot8nllal for Identlfylng new therapeutlc uses for
exlsting drugs already marketed for other conditions.
A Se￿nd science profil8 posled online provides an overview of the evolution and
Importance of immunoassay diagnostics. Deslgned to exploit the blnding reactlon
be￿een an antlgen and antibody, immunoassays make it PQS5ible to detect and
measure specific substancés in biological samples. such 9$ blood and other bodily
flulds. Used extensivety in hospit818, laboratorl8s and research centres slnc8 the late

nlnet88nth céntury, immunoassay diagnostics are invaluable tools for the detection of
Infectious disease5 as well as for many non-communicable diseases. Jusl how
valuable they are was seen dudng the COVID pandemic when Immunoassay
diagnostics w8re used on a wide scale for self-lesting. This was helped ty the fact
that such diagnost1￿ are simple to use, inexpensfve. accurate and fast and can
detect very low levels of infection. As well as b8lng used for dlagnosing disease and
rnonitoring treatment, immunoassays are pivotal to biopharrnaceutical research and
development and for the detection of envlronmental hazards.
The thlrd sdenllfi¢ profib covers the hlstory of GLP-1 drugs which have surged in
popularity in recent years by vlrtue of their ability to help with obesity. First approved
for obesity In 2021, the d8velopment of such drugs did not happen overnlght. Nor
was ob8slty their startirvJ point. As th8 profile mskes clear, thelr 8m8rgenc8 rested on
the long quest of many different Individuals over many decades to unravel the
compléx physiology of th8 gut and its dlsea5es, parti￿larlY di?beles. Progre88 on thls
front w88 incremental and ti)ok many Iw18ts arvj tums. Demand for such drugs Is
Ilkely to continu8 to be strong In the future due lo rislng rales of obesity and
Interllnked chronlc disea8e8. GLP-1 drugs alr88dy show promise for the treatment of
many Inflammatory dlse8ses including Oslhma and inftammatory bowel disorders like
Crohn's dlse8se and ulcerative colitls.

8oience 68ctor lo Insplre students to pursue a career In the sector. AttractlrvJ young

area due lo the burgeoning nurnber of companies In this space. ageing and
comp6titSon for tslent from olhor Induslrfes. In order lo dellver on its mls8lon, Fut810 ig
contlnulng lo l)ulld up a database of Ilfe 8cl8nce companies In the UK. The database
now includes 21,992 comp8nles and 74,326 offir￿[s. In additlon, it is collecting a list
of schools and higher educatlon organisations in diffe￿nt parts of the UK. This
database18 Used to Gonnecl students wllh drfferent companies in thelr area through
semlnars, networklng evenl8, onllne and In peTr¢)n silé vlsits, class visits by s¢l8ntlsts,
mentoring and inlemships.
Following its Ilr81 event at Whe8118y Park School. Holton. Oxfordshlre on 25th Wil
2024, Fu18io held three further highly 8ucces5ful trlal events in Pinner Cambridge and
L6ytonslone. The feedback from both volunteers and students was oveThvh8lmingly
positive from these events wllh one of the students who attended the Leyton$tone

Future Biolechnologists is now seeking fundlng to 8UPPOrt the launch of multi-yèar
evidence-led programmes for schools. The first one will focus on schools In areas of
deprivallon in London (Camden, Hackney. Lambelh, Lewisham, Islington, Newham.
Paddington, Southwafk and Tower Hamlets). It will be a three-year programme
deliverèd In partnershlp with lo¢al unlvers4ties. research in8liiu188, medical schools
and life science companies.

Infectlous disoase: What It mean8 for p•oplo Ilvlng wlth Immunosuppm*lon
Slnce March 2023 the charty has been collaboratlng with researchers at the
Universty of Cambridge to understand the spedflc challenges and needs
Immunosuppressed patlents and their familiés face in relation to infectious disease
(COV1￿19, drug resistant infections) so that these issues cgn be addressed In better
preventlon and treatment. As part of this project an onllne survey has b88n conducted
with thr86 dlfferent groups.. Volunteers from the NIHR BioResourc8 Centre in
Cambridge. Gambian community in Petertrxfough and Facebook support group for
people wth Myo$itis, Demiatomyoslll¥, IBM and Antlsynthetase Syndrome. A number
of public engagement 8Ctivities have also been carrlad out to Increase public
awareness of the diffiCul￿eS people wlth weakened immunity experience with COVID-
