Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Our work has unfortunately been affected
by the pandemic, but we have continued
the fundraising in order to get the
programme established fully in 2023/4
again. We have supported fellows with
grants in the past and the travel
fellowships which had been awarded will
now be utilised in line with the aims and
objectives of the charity and continue to be
awarded for 2024.
After our BICRAA app (www.bicraa.org)
had been successfully tested in India
(n=1049), showing that around 30% chew
betel nut (we would like to thank Prof.
Kelkar and Dr. Pethe from the Deenanath
Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune, for their
invaluable support), the app has continued
to help raise the awareness of the risks of
betel nut chewing.
We have continued working on a global
study to extend these efforts in India and
other countries.
With regard to our work in Indonesia, we
have continued to closely work with our
partners at the Dr. Sardjito Hospital/Gadjah
Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia,
and one of the trustees, Mr. Matt Lechner,
travelled there in September 2022 to
support the local Nasopharyngeal Cancer
(NPC) awareness and early detection
programme and to support research and
publications of results. The Storz company
has continued to support our programme
and in 2024 we were will be able to award
fellowship grants to young surgeons,
sponsored by a donation by Storz,
allowing them travel to low and middle
income countries and to help with the local
charitable work.
