When plannin8 our activities for the year, the Executive Committee have considered the Charity Commission's guidance for public benefiL Derby u3a is committed to increasing its membership and range of activities for the public benefit of those who are retired or semi-retired from full-time work. It achieves this by the voluntary support of its members who help run the organisation and all its group activities. Achievements and Performance Membership and Publicity Membership numbers at the end of this period have increased to 616 (586 full members 8nd 30 associate members). For the end of the previous year 2024-25. membership numbers stood at 509. We have therefore increased our membership by 21%. Whilst word of mouth remain$ one of the most important ways of informing the public about Derby u38. we also held a publicity event in November 2025 in Derbvs main shopping centre. which attracted over100 peoplè. Information leaflets and posters were updated with our new website address and a QR code, which were handed out at this evenL Information leaflets and posters have also been distributed to local libraries. Groups We currently have 54 active groups, all organised by volunteers. These range from Archaeology and History to Writing for Pleasure. This year saw ten new groups established= Allestree Social, Astrology, Bookworms, Craft & Chat, Ecology, Mickleover Social. MOTO (Members on their ownl, Myths & Legends, Walking Football and the Wednesday Wanderers walking group. Outings Eight day outings by coach were arranged between February and November. These are off ered to members 8t cost. They were to: Leicester. Stockport Hatworks Museum and Bramhall Hall, 81ist Hill. 08kham and Barnsdale Nursery. Birmingham, Coughton Court, Bletchley Parl and Oxford.
Our Yoar The focus of our year was the 40 Anniversary Celebrations of our founding in 1985. The highlights of our year were: In April we held a showcase event at The Wardwicl attended by the Lord Mayor of Derby, where 189 members enjoyed displays and the chance to experience our groups. This included the chance to explore the history, architecture. and art of Derby City Centre. Over 40 members enjoyed a picnic at Dadey Fields on 24 July. The event started with walk exploring the history of Chester Green. led by members of our Local History group. Following the picnic our Pickleball Group invited people to try the popular sport and a SGaven6er Hunt was or6anised. Throughout the y8ar members partiCiP8ted in a personal challenge to experience new activities, using the acronym 'Derby u3a'. Our Anniversary Celebrations featured in the national magazine'u3a matters,, local newspapers, on Facebook. Our Anniversary songs 'Happy Anniversary Derby u3a' and the Tuèsday Trampers 'Forever Young Fools, are on You Tube. In addition to our Anniversary Celebrations, the following activities a150 took place". We received a sports grant of £320 from Derby City Council to introduce new members to sporting activities, as part of their Get Active campaign. We offered free sports sessions in April for Seated Keep Fit. Wa5king Football Table Tennis, Badminton and Pickleball. These sessions attracted 15 new members to the groups,13% of the participants. During the year we updated our Finance Policy and Groups Policy so that all the necessary information was in one documenL A publicity event in November at the free Community Hub venue in the Derbion shoppin8 Centre. attracted over 100 members of the public. The long-standing tradition of a Christmas Buffet was org8nised for the end of November, at which members brought their own food contributions and were entertained by our Singing Group and a reflection of our Anniversary Year. Monthly Meetings with 8 speaker on a topic of general interest were held every month with th8 exception of December. New Member Meetings We held five New Member meetings throughout the year. each attracting between 10 8nd 25 people. These are an opportunity for new and prospective members to find out more about the u38 and our activities, and we had many new members sign up through this process. Communications We send out a monthly newsletter by email and by post to those who pay a small fee towards this service. We maintain both private group and public Facebook pages. These have a growing audience. Equipment During this year we have purchased additional projectors for use at one of our main venues, the Central United Reformed Church, for our Singing Group and a smaller projector which is available to use where our groups meet in memberfs homes or at smaller venues.
Volunteers Derby u3a is run entirely by volunteers. We would like to tske this opportunity to offer our thanks and appreciation to all those who have helped this year. Group Orsanisers Helpers at Monthly Meetings who take money and register people at the door, provide refreshments. and welcome new members. Helpers at Naw Member meetings Helpers with technolo8y issues Accessibility Officer Members of our publicity team and 40th Anniversary team. Executive Committep members who carry out many of the main tasks o* running Derby u3a. including treasurer, membership. groups coordination and room-booking, arranging outings and speakers. website. newsletter. and heading up teams. CondolenGe$ Sadly, during the past year several of our members have passed away. We offer sincere condolences to all those who have lost loved ones amongst their f8mily and frierK4s. Summary We have increased the learning and socialising opportunities for our members, as well as partnering with other or8anisations to help achieve their aims. Several new and successful nitiatives have $tarted this year, and we continue to develop our activities aryl number of members. Financial Review- See also: attached Statement of Accounts The accounts relate to the year ended 31 December 2025 and the comparative figures relate to the previous year ended 31 December 2024. Since 2021 the accounts have been prepared on the receipts and payments basis. Notes detailing transactions included in the accounts that relate to either the previous year or the following year are provided to ensure a complete view of Derby u3a finances for 2025 is provided. Current Account Income The budget basis for 2025 was to operate a deficit budgeL meaning we would draw down on surplus funds to help fund various 40 Anniversary Celebrations that ran throughout the year. However, we had another successful year attracting new members that increased our predicted income from membership fees by £1.776.00. The increase in membership in turn increased interest group, activity group and monthly meeting Participation generating further income than expected. New groups were also formed, generating income and expenses.
Income for Soei81 events such as theatre visits. lunches, outings and the holiday to The Hague in 2026 has increased the amount of income and expenses passing through the account. These events are entirely self-funding. Grants In April. thanks to a grant of £320 from the Dèrby City Sports Forun which was applied for on behalf of Derby u32 by members Bob Thorne and Catherine Wykes, we were able to offer members the opportunity to try out for free our Pickleball Table Tennis. Badminton, Walking Football and Keep Fit groups as the grant covered the cost of venue hire. Donations and the Special Fund We were fortunate to receive donations totalling £962 from Riviera Travel (from 4 members bookins holidays with them), This has been added to the special fund to purchase equipment for the use of Derby u38 groups and for publicity purposes. During the year three projectors have been purchased. One for use at Central United Reform Church thus allowins two group meetinss at the sametime.Anotherforthe singinggroup meeting at All Saints Parish Centre in Mickleover and the third for groups meeting in members, homes. Other purchases include a laminator, Derby u3a badges, u3a coasters and pens for publicity purposes, shuttlecocks, table tennis balls, pickleballs and footb811 gloves for activity groups, paints for interest groups. At the close of 2025 the Special Fund stands at £3.507.44 Expenditure Our main expenditure is on venue hire, speaker fees for monthly meetings, and administration costs. To mark our 40 Anniversary various celebratory events have been held throughout the year. As we had a healthy surplus in our accounts the Committee decided that the first session of the month for Interest Groups would be free of charge to members in November. For Sports Groups it Was $lightly differentr Badminton. Pickleball and Table Tennis,their first session in November was free to participants. Walking football. the first session in November members received a refund of £2 per person. Business Savings Account The Business Savings Account is used to hold the reserve fund. outings reserve, £3,000 of the special fund and general funds until required. Reserve5 Policy The special fund, intended for capital expenditure and publicity and social funds for social activities that are entirely self-funding. are excluded from the reSee f igure calculation. Our policy is to hold enough in reserve to allow the organisation to cover regular outst8nding expenses for a period of six months in the event of failure. The reserve for 2025 was set at
£8.000. For 2026 this has been increased to £8,500 to reflect our growing membership and increased costs as more groups are formed. Examination ot Accounts We would like to record our thanks to Peter Illsley for examining our accounts. Structure, governance and mana8ement Derby u3a, founded in 1985, is an independently funded unincorporated members. association belonging to the wider national association overseen by the Third Age Trust (TAT). TAT provides a recommended structure, advice and guidance and various licences and insurances. Derby u3a was registered as a charity in 2016 and operates under a Constitution last amended in October 2024. The governing body of Derby u3a is the Executive Committee, which is responsible for the strategy and poSicies ot the u3a. and dealing with the administratiorL management and control of the affairs and property of Derby u3a. The Executive Committee met10 times during the year. There must be at least 5 and not more than 15 u3a members appointed to the Executive Committee. 15 refers to 12 elected and 3 co-opted members. The officers are: Chair, not more than two Vice-chairs, Treasurer and Secretary. An individual may only serve in one Officer role at a time. Appointment of members of the Executive Committee At the Annual General Meeting the non-officer members ot the Executive Committee shall all retire and member5 shall elect from amongst the membership individuals to serve as Committee members. The term of office is one year, from the Annual General Meeting at which helshe is appointed until the next Annual General Meeting. A retiring Executive Committee member may be re-appointed provided helshe remains a member of the u3a. A person may not serve more than nine consecutive terms as a member of the Executive Committee. Appolntment of Off icers At the Annual General Meeting of The u3a, the serving Officers shall retire from office and the members shall elect from amongst the membership individuals to serve as the Officers. A retiring Off icer may be re-appointed provided helshe remains a member of the u38 and subject to the limits on periods of service set out below. Chair. Ilkeston, Long Eaton & District, Melbourne Area. and Ripley & District whereby members of Derby u3a can attend three of their groups without having to join as members. and vice versa. Third Age Trust Derby u3a is a member of the Third Age Trust and has voting rights within that organisation. Responsibilities of the Trustees and the Examiner The trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that the Charities Act 2011 does not require there to be an audit of these accounts and they have chosen nstèad to submit them for independent examination. The examinerfs responsibilities are to.. examine the accounts under section 145 of the Act. follow the procedures laid down in the general direttion5 given by the Charity Commission under section 145 of the Art; report on any particular matters that should be brought to attention of the trustees or the Charity Commission. Basls of the Independent Examinerfs report My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions and guidance issued by the Charity Commission. in particular the requirements of sertion 145 of the Charities Act 2011. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those retords. also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts. and seeking explanation from the trustees concerning any such matters, if necessary.
