Nuinber is 1165387. It operates in partTJership with Epworth Old Rectory (Trust) which is
r¥gislcrcd with. and overseen by, The Methodisi ChurLh in Gieal Britain (MCB). The

1.2 Historical Information
Epworth Old Rectory (EOR) was, from 1695 to 1735. tbc family home of Samucl and
Sii8anna ￿ICs1iY and their 19 children lot ￿'horn 10 survii'ed) including John and
Charles Wcsley, founders of Methodism. In 1709 the cxisting Tectory burncd to thc
ground and the curreni building erected in ils place.
The Old Reeiory is a Queen Anne Grade l Listed Building. li had a nuinber of
extensions during the early 19th century.. Soine outbuildings were added in the late 19th
and ?Oth centuries. The property slill retains oKeT 4 acres of glebe land _ ref¢rred to by
thc Wesleys as 'thc croft, . in addition to fornial gardcns.
The building continued to be used by the ChurLh of England Ils a rectory tor St.
Andrcw's parish until 1954 whcn il ￿'aS bought by funds raised by rhL World MLihudist
Council (WMC) and regtstered by the TNslees for Meihodisi Church Purposes
ITMCPI.
In 1957 il was opened to the general public as a museum dedicaied to the life and lime%
of John and Charles Wcsley. and in parti¢ulaT. to th¢ influ¢nc¢ on thcm by ihcir parcnls
Samuel and Susanna Wesley.
A collection of historiexl objects and "Wesleyana" has grown over the years. with a
library of books and documents connecied to the Wesleys being donated to the museum
in the 1980s.

In 2023 the Valuaiion Office {HMRC) chanoed the designation of the property from a
