Trustee Report 2020 was a bl8 and challengingyearforjackson's Animal Rescue. Building on the success and public support of previous years we have significantly increased our capaclty and capability to rescue animals. We acquired and began renovatlons on a new site that wlll allow us to be8in rescuin8 domestic anlmals on a much larger scale than we were prevlously able to. The new sSte complete with cattery, kennel building a barn and 8ra2in8 land will enable usto address the ever-Increasln8 demand forthe rescue and rehoming of domestic animals. But we begin the year as Wirral Animal Sanctuary, wlth a wlldlife centre full of overwintering hed8eho85, 136 to be precise, all recelvlng dally care from our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Whllst events are thln on the ground in January we attended a hed8eho8 weekend at Ness Botanlc gardens, a great event to raise publlc awareness and we were lucky to attend a talk and to have a chat afterwards wlth Hu8h Warwlck, one of the UK'S leadln8 hedgehog experts. Overthe next couple of months. we fundraised at COryOP In 8ebin8ton. Gave varfous educatlonal talks at, schoo15, brownie troops, and W.1 groups to mention but a few. In March we were lucky to receive a £500 donation from Asda In Woodchurch from thelr 8reen token scheme. Jacksons Anlmal Rescue Registered Charity Number 1165330
By the 14th of March with Covid-19 bearin8 down on us we took the decision to close our wildlife centre to the public, to protect our volunteers. We continued to operate as normal but implemented contactless procedures for dropping off animals and donations. Just over a week later we closed our shops and and on the announcement of lockdown we began the mammoth task of releasln8 all our healthy ovepwintered hedgehogs. With a monumental effort and military level planning we released 128 hogs back in to the wild in just one day. Along side this All our domestic animals were put in to foster and the 8 remaining hedgehogs went home wlth carers. Wlth a wlldllfe centre mothballed we went home, Ilke the rest of the country, wondering what the future had in store. ij, WÈ weren't closed for long. On government 8uldance and as an essentlal seNlce we be8an to take animals in again. just a few days later. With very low admlsslons at th15 tlme of year we were lucklly able to operate wlth just two volunteers and all the staff were furlou8hed On the first of April we were lucky to recelve a emer8enqi grant of £50(Kl from pets at home. May saw us appearing on BBC Radio Merseyside to talk about our work with hedgehog5. With an increase in admi55ions a member of 5tsff was brou8ht back in to deal with the workload. 8yJune we were back to havinBthe wildlife centre fully staffed and with the influx of blrds throughout May we fundraised wtth a public appeal and built a lar8e aviary to allow recuperatlon and accllmatlsatlon before release. The community rallied round us throughout the crisis. W311asey pollce station donated supplies and money raised from theirtuck shop and a wonderful youn8 gid called Charlotte did a sponsored read for us and raised an incredible £850. OGCE It's been a long-term goal for the charlty to have Its own dedlcated premlses speciflcally to rescue cats and dogs and we launched our dream fund last year to Start slowly savlng towards that 8oal. As It turns out the unlverse declded to 8lve us a push forward and In August, we were lucky to be Invited to view the site of a former anlmal rescue in Mold. The slte was neglected, overgrown and required a huge amount ofwork to make it functSonal, thof but we could see the potentlal, so we set about makln8 plans. On the 4 September we 51gned contracts and got the keys. The next few weeks were a flurry of activity. We were vlslted bythe leader Ilve newspaper for an Intervlew and appeared on BBC Radlo Merseyslde to talk about the new 51te, "Jackson'5 Pla¢e" The charity was renamed Jackson's Anlmal Rescue, after the inspiration for the charity, our founders rescue dog. With the two sites now being called., Jackson's Wildlife Centre, located at Larton liveries on the Wirral. Jackson's Place. located in Padeswood near Mold. '$
Continuing our expansion into Wales we took on a new shop in Shotton and recruited a new shop manager, but with differing lockdown rules in Wales we were unable to open it untll iothof November just a week after we had to close the English shops for another lockdown. We appeared on Radio Deeside to talk about the new shop openin8 and our plans forthe new site. JACKSON'S ANIMAL RESCUE Our first task at the new site was to build a volunteer tollet faclSlty and that was completed on the 14th of November, whlch allowed us to have volunteers on slte A local group of volunteers called Team Red heard our call for help and sprang Into actlon. Running a raffle which ralsed £563 and organising a DIYS.O.S weekend whlch saw a large group of local volunteers and tradesmen come and help us get the slte back under control. They cleaned, palnted, weeded and jet washed. We had a kitchen fitted, a cattery floor tlled and outside lights wlred up. What was achleved In that weekend was Incredlble and slx months worth of work was done InJust two days. Jack50ns Animal Rescue Reglstered Charity Number 1165330
In December we welcomed our first resident5 to Jackson's place; Rosie and tily. These two potbellied plgs were rescued just hours from beln8 euthanised as thelr owners could no longer keep them. And just a few day5 later we received a call about an abandoned pigmy goat who we called Eden, all three have been inseparable ever slncel 2020 saw 1177 wlld anlma15 Pass throu8h our care alon8 wlth 106 domestlc anlmals. We have set the groundwork to again, si8nlficantly increase that capacity in the comin8 year. We would Ilke to say a masslve thank you to all our supporters, wlthout you we could not contlnue to do the work that we do, and we are $0 very 8rateful for each and every one of you. Flnanclal Re ort In financlal terms, the year was exceptional nearly from the OLrtset. Even prlor to the first lockdown on 23 March. there had been a drop In footfall and therefore takin8s such that both of the shop5 were doln8 little more than markin8time from the beginningof March. When lockdown actually arrlved, we had a plan In place to release all hedgehogs possible at short notice to reduce dramatically the amount of work requlred of the animal sanctuary. All paid staff were put on fudou8h and the work at the sanctuary was undertaken by a mix of Trustees and volunteers. Plans were also put In place to reduce out8olngs wherever possible and thank5 are due to the shop landlords who agreed to forego rental payments for an Indefinite period. In due course, we were able to take advanta8e of the Business Support Grants In respect of our closed retail premise& This meant that we could resume payments tothe landlords and to repay any arrears. We also managed to obtaln lump sums from other sources, such as Pets at Home. This combination meant that thÈ loss of the shop income, income from events and also fundraising opportunities such as bucket collecting was mitl8ated to a great degree. As the Summer progressed, we brought back sanctuary staff from furlough to refiect the increased artivity at the centre. Curiously. a side effect of lockdown was that, with people spendlng more time in their gardensthan nomal, more ill or injured anlmals were brought to our attention and we were busier than ever. In July, when most of the COVID restrlctlons were relaxed, the shops were re-opened and all staff were brought off furlough. Although the shops operated normally within reason. events did not resume at all with one or two exceptions near to Christmas. Bucket colletting and similar means of fundraislng have not resumed tothe time of writing. Despite these difflcultles, an opportunlty arose where we could take over a site near Mold, in North Wales previously occupied by Capricorn Anlmal Rescue. It was also clearthat operatin8 a second animal sanctuary would have very significant revenue impllcations and that further sources of Income would be requlred to support the extra expendlture. Accordlngly It was declded to open further shops in North Wales. We opened our shop In Shotton, Deeside in late Autumn but were hampered by further local lockdowns whlch flrstly delayed the opening and then caused a further closure Just prlor to Christmas. In the short tlme It was open, it was clear that the shop had significant earning potential. At time of wrStln& In late 2021, all shops (including a further one in Wrexham) have re- opened but events are patchy and bucket collecting has not resumed althou8h 8overnment support ha5 ceased, 8lving rlse to a challenging financlal outlook Jacksons Animal Rescue Reglstered Charity Number 1165330
