Borderline Books

It became clear that as far as Gateshead Council is concerned, we are not in danger of being moved out of Unit 1B, Stonehills for Borderline Books. T3 is a less certain situation.

Kirstie continued to work with local schools and holiday projects to ensure that local children have books of their own at home. By the end of the year over 16,000 books had gone out to young people in our area. We also contacted more food banks to ask them to include books in their offerings where space allows. This was a great success.

As well as Kirstie and Claire, volunteers Sam, Darius and David continued coming to help with stamping and sorting books and packing the prison parcels. Our old friend Owen also came now and then to stamp books as he has been doing for 5½ years.

Cambridge University Press continued to support us with books. This year it was thousands of copies of English Grammar in Use, probably one of the best self-study grammar books available. We put CUP in touch with a number of prisons who asked to receive copies direct and we took on an incredible number of boxes of books in order to prevent them from being pulped. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the books, but a new edition was scheduled, so these had become superfluous. It has been wonderful to be able to supply these books to prisons, refugee organisations and small groups supporting people learning the language.

Prisons

In late January we sent New Year cards to everyone who had written to us from prison during 2020. Again this gesture was well received.

At the start of the year Amina was still working from home while Claire and Darius picked books at Stonehills. We continued working with prisons all over the UK to send books to people who were still in lockdown even when most other places had opened up. We began sending individual requests again in May and from then until December we sent 4,556 books to 300 people in more than 70 prisons.

Multilingual Library

When the year opened we had 5 units in Eldon Garden; one for the main library, one (Verb) for a meetings and classroom, two units mainly for storage and one on the lower floor as exhibition space. At the beginning of the year the library was still closed, but it appeared that it would not be long before we could open again. Catherine continued cataloguing books at home and we looked forward to a better year.

On 14 February we received notice from our landlords giving us 2 weeks to move out of all of the units we occupied in Eldon Garden. Our initial reaction was ‘don’t be ridiculous, we have over 15000 books and are in the midst of a pandemic, so we can’t have more than 3 people working in the library at one time to pack up.’ We turned to Newcastle City Council for help and – since they jointly own Eldon Garden, they managed to persuade our landlords to extend the deadline to the end of April. It is unknown why we were made to move – our neighbours, a cancer charity were also given notice to leave and even their offer to pay the commercial rent was turned down. More than a year later, those units remain empty.

We put out calls for help through Twitter and Facebook and all our networks. We considered around 15 different possibilities around Newcastle and Gateshead, and in total viewed 9 properties. We had been on the brink of coming to an agreement for temporary use of the former Sunderland Road library in Gateshead when we visited during a rain storm and saw the water cascading in through the ceiling in a small-scale replica of Niagara Falls.

Not long after this we were offered the former Woolworth’s building on Gateshead High Street which at the time was being used for artist’s studios by New Bridge Project. This was a huge space and could be a nightmare to heat, but it still seemed like a good alternative. We had hoped that we could move in by the beginning of October, but New Bridge decided to stay until the end of their lease, which was in mid-November. From that time until mid 2022, Gateshead Council kept promising us a ‘timeline’ for moving in. For the rest of that story you’ll need to read the Annual report fo 2022.

In the meantime, in March CILIP (the library and information association) North East held its AGM and focused on Libraries of Sanctuary which many on the committee knew nothing about. Our library was officially (and virtually) ‘presented’ with our certificate and John Vincent gave a talk about libraries of Sanctuary. This event – including a talk by our Trustee, Jola Olafimihan, can be seen on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RILe7THqGmo

Later in the year Newcastle City Library also achieved Library of Sanctuary status. Annoyingly the press reported that they were the first library in the North-East to attain that title, whereas they had been told that it was the first >Public< library in the North-East to become a Library of Sanctuary….. Once we re-open and look for publicity we will be sure to rectify this nugget of misinformation!

As of this writing in August 2022 the library is still in storage with that famous ‘timeline’ still moving ahead like a mirage in a desert. We are expecting to move into yet another empty council property for 3-5 years as the former Woolworth’s building proved too complicated for our needs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In general we feel that the Kittiwake Trust is moving into a new phase where we will be looking for more permanent premises for all parts of the project. Inevitably this will mean looking for more substantial funding and probably more paid staff. This all calls for an active and motivated Board of Trustees and a strong Chair – a position that has been vacant since Mandy Maxwell resigned in 2020 with Amina standing in as Acting Chair.
We have come a long way since we set up the Trust as a constituted community organisation in 2009 and became a charity in 2016. Now definitely seems to be the time to bring in more trustees with experience and energy to lead us into the next chapter.
