## **Organisation** :
KESCRG exists to coordinate volunteer working parties to aid Canal restoration projects generally but not exclusively around the south of England. These working parties run broadly one weekend a month. The working parties are organised by the KESCRG working Committee, drawn from the body of volunteers, which comprises both trustees and nontrustees. Our body of volunteers is around 30 individuals over the year, with each working party attracting up to 15 people.
## **Relationships:**
KESCRG works closely other canal charities and trusts to coordinate and identify opportunities to contribute voluntary effort to suitable restoration projects.
## **Risks:**
- KESCRG volunteers work on construction sites, consequently KESCRG operates a full Health and Safety Policy including Risk Assessments and Method Statements covering our operations.

In this period KESCRG organised 6 weekend working parties and provided the leadership team for a Waterway Recovery Group summer week-long Canal Camp. We also assisted the Wey and Arun Canal Trust with a publicity stand at the Surrey Hills Wood Fair to raise public awareness of the Canal Restoration activity in their local area. KESCRG volunteers contributed to the restoration objectives of the following partner charities:

Over the course of the reporting period KESCRG coordinated 6 weekend working parties, including a 5-day extended working party on the Cromford Canal Beggerlee extension project providing specialist skills and experience to complete drainage and culvert works on the site before a statutory deadline, and a week-long summer Canal Camp working holiday on behalf of the Waterway Recovery Group. We also provided skilled volunteers to assist with the ‘Drive a Digger’ experience for young people at the Surrey Hills Wood Fair.
Volunteer engagement for weekends is recovering and approaching precovid levels, typically attracting 10-15 volunteers and drawing from a pool of around 30 individuals. In total over the year we have provided around 2000 volunteer-hours to the various canal restoration projects.

Section D Achievements and performance
## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
The Working parties were as follows:
- 13/14[th] May 2023 – Wendover Arm. This working party was cancelled at short notice due to work permissions on the local project
- 10/11[th] June 2023 – Lichfield Canal, joint weekend with London WRG. Towpath and ducting work at Darnford Moors Ecology Park.
- 15[th] – 22[nd] July 2023 – Cotswold Canals, WRG Summer camp. Construction work on the restoration of Westfield/John Robinson Lock west of Stoud.
- • 1[st ] - 5[th] Sept 2023 – Cromford Canal, drainage and culvert works on the Beggerlee extension project
- 9[th] Sept 2023 – Assistance with the Wey and Arun ‘Drive a Digger’ experience for young people at the Surrey Hills Wood Fair, raising awareness of the Canal Restoration project.
- • 7/8[th] Oct 2023 – Cotswold Canals, construction work on the restoration of Westfield / John Robinson lock west of Stroud.
- • 2[nd] /3[rd ] Dec 2023 – Wey and Arun, joint with London WRG & WRG Forestry, clearing scrub and hedging to allow access to trees affected by Ash Dieback below Brewhurst Lock
- • 3[rd] /4[th] Feb 2024 – Wey and Arun, scrub clearance below Devils Hole Lock
- • 2[nd] /3[rd] March 2024 – John Robinson Lock on the Cotswolds Canals west of Stroud. Removal of trees from brook in preparation for installation of culvert under lock forebay

KESCRG’s principal sources of funding for this period were contributions towards subsistence from volunteers on working parties, and a contribution from our associated 100 club.
KESCRG’s principal out going is the Insurance required to support our activities on construction sites and to protect our equipment, and providing food for our volunteers on dig weekends.
