Timothy Wells set up a committee of trustees based in Kenya during his December 2018 trip. The Kenya-based committee of trustees currently includes two teachers and a student representative (a graduate of the TWCT sponsorship programme) and it aims to meet four times a year (using Zoom as necessary) to oversee the programme and to check the accounts. This committee of trustees is responsible for assessing any new student referrals for the sponsorship programme. The ongoing plan is to take on up to five new students a year. - In Q4 2022 a Programme Coordinator, Julia Wanjiru Mwai, was appointed on a 4-year contract predominantly to help manage the evaluation process for new students, to proactively visit each student to check on their progress, as well as to manage ongoing elements of the programme. - Committee members are available to mentor/counsel the students at any time. ## **Section C Objectives and activities** The objects of the Timothy Wells Charitable Trust are the advancement of such charitable purposes for the public benefit (according to the law of England and Wales) as the trustees see fit from time to time and in particular, but without limitation of the foregoing: - (a) the advancement of the education of persons in East Africa; (b) the relief of poverty, hardship, and distress worldwide, and in **Summary of the objectives of** particular amongst persons throughout the world who are persecuted for **the charity set out in its** their Christian faith and persons in East Africa; **governing document** - (c) the advancement of the Christian faith; (d) the protection and preservation of the environment and the preservation of endangered species of animals; (e) the relief of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or from cancer. TAR April 2025 2 Funds from the charity are divided between East African Education Sponsorship and UK Charities (ratio between 90:10 to 70:30) at the discretion of the main trustee. - **In 2024 the funds were split approximately 89:11 East African Education Sponsorship Charities, £40,587: £4,927.** - Most of the funds were donated to ACK (Anglican Church of Kenya) Kirinyaga Diocese in Kenya for the running of the Timothy Wells Sponsorship Programme there. - The next main recipient of funds was St Stephens Children’s Home. **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** - Funds also went to other colleges and universities providing ongoing education for sponsored pupils progressing further to higher education: Kabarak University, Kenya Medical Training College. TAR April 2025 3 Section D Achievements and performance **Summary of** ’ Activities during 2024 relating to the charity s main objectives: **the main achievements (a) the advancement of the education of persons in East Africa: of the charity** _(See photos on pages 5-7)_ **during the year** This year, the charity sponsored 30 students (16 in secondary school and 14 in further education) who required financial assistance as identified by the Diocese, equipping them with the skills and opportunities to progress in their education and chosen careers. Seven secondary students graduated, and the Trust assisted them in finding suitable tertiary courses or next steps in their education. Additionally, one student graduated with a BSc in Pure Mathematics. The Programme Coordinator continued to visit sponsored students throughout the year to monitor their progress and encourage them in their ongoing studies. She also assisted those who were being admitted to tertiary institutions. Students who graduated from Form Four were given the opportunity to receive computer training as part of the initiative to prepare them for the world of work. On 23[rd] August 2024, the sponsored students attended another Mentorship Day to help students to prepare mentally and emotionally for their exams, ably arranged by the Programme Coordinator. The agenda included sessions on specific school subjects and performance, a presentation by one of the trustees on re-branding for discipline and academic success, and a session on overcoming procrastination to support students in achieving their goals. In November 2024, during the long two-month holiday, a two-week course was conducted at Utugi Children’s Home to provide secondary students with extra coaching in subjects such as math’s, physics, chemistry, and biology. The Timothy Wells Charitable Trust Alumni Programme for students who have benefited from the Trust’s sponsorship continued during the year, with alumni reconnecting online in a monthly fellowship. This provided an opportunity for ongoing interaction and encouragement for those now pursuing tertiary education. In December 2024, Timothy Wells visited Kenya. During his visit, the Trust organized a three-day team-building camp at the Utugi Children’s Centre, bringing all the students together. A group of graduates from the TWCT programme extended the poultry unit as part of their work project to support the facility, while another group conducted general cleaning in the compound, including weeding around the cowpeas (black-eyed peas) and some playground landscaping. This initiative was coordinated with another group of children sponsored by an American donor. Social activities, including football matches, were also part of the camp. During his December 2024 visit, Timothy Wells met with the local Kenyan trustees for an annual update meeting. He also visited St Stephens Children’s Home and met the current students and several previous students who TWCT had sponsored. There have been strong educational results for some of the programme’s students. Ruth Doris achieved her degree in Pure Mathematics and is to be highly congratulated. The secondary Form Four graduate students on the programme also achieved good results (1 x B+, 2 x B, 1 x B-), marking the best secondary graduation outcomes received for TWCT-sponsored students to date. TAR April 2025 5 Section D Achievements and erformance p Some TWCT students at Utugi Children's Centre are shown working together to weed a cowpea farm, using machetes to clear the area and ensure healthy crop growth. This hands-on activity highlights their teamwork and practical agricultural skills. A group photo of the entire working team, including TWCT students and the American donor students, gathered in front of the building at Utugi Children's Centre after completing their project. They stand together smiling, highlighting their unity and shared accomplishment during the camp. TAR April 2025 6 Section D ## Achievements and erformance p A final day gathering took place in the Utugi Children’s Centre dining hall, where Timothy Wells and the trustees addressed the TWCT students. The students sat attentively, listening to Timothy’s farewell message and his best wishes for the new year. Timothy Wells, George Mwangi Chege and the Programme Coordinator, Julia Wanjiru Mwai, on a visit to a farmer, recently widowed, who has 4 sons. TWCT has sponsored one son through secondary school and is now sponsoring two sons through their further education at the University. TAR April 2025 7 Section D Achievements and erformance p **(b) the relief of poverty, hardship, and distress worldwide, and in particular amongst persons throughout the world who are persecuted for their Christian faith and persons in East Africa:** In 2018, the local accountant for the TWCT in Kenya opened a ‘Cooperative Finance System’, to which the TWCT makes regular contributions. Local people can borrow funds from this account at a low interest rate, and any profits generated are returned to the Trust. We continue to contribute to the Cooperative Finance System to support the local Kenyan community; while the income is small, it remains an ongoing initiative. The cooperative tea farm, located in the Kirinyaga Diocese on ¾ acre of land purchased by the Timothy Wells Charitable Trust in 2016, continues to be managed with student participation. The Programme Coordinator proactively arranged for young avocado trees to be planted on a slope too steep for tea bushes, with the aim of generating additional income. Various contributions were also made to UK-based charities such as: Amnesty International, Barnabas Aid, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, the Gurkha Welfare Trust. ## **(c) the advancement of the Christian faith:** Various contributions were made to UK-based charities such as All Souls Church, London; Premier Christian Media Trust, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Evangelical Alliance, Jews for Jesus, Tearfund, Feba Radio, Langham Partnership. **(d) the protection and preservation of the environment and the preservation of endangered species of animals:** Various contributions were made to UK charities such as The National Trust, The Woodland Trust, WWF UK, Greenpeace Environmental Trust, Friends of the Earth Trust, Solar Aid, Kew Foundation. **(e) the relief of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or from cancer:** Various contributions were made to UK charities such as Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, Tom’s Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support.
