## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Timothy Wells’ End of Year 2021 Statement:

This year we introduced ‘Break-out Groups’ to our Mentorship Days – one held in each of the three school vacations. Each group of about 6 students was chaired by an undergraduate student (college/university). Two of the leaders were female students recently taken onto the programme. We listened to the students and made it a two-way communication.

Timothy Wells visited for two weeks over Christmas 2021 after a 2-year absence due to the global Covid pandemic. We all (27 in total; 23 students, 4 committee members) travelled to Maasai Mara to stay two nights at Siana Springs Tented camp https://siana-springs.co.ke/.

A Maasai warrior was our guide as we spent a day in the wildlife reserve viewing the animals.

Activities during 2021 relating to the charity’s main objectives:

## **(a) the advancement of the education of persons in East Africa:**

This year the charity sponsored 26 secondary school and further education students needing financial assistance, as identified by the Diocese, giving the individuals the skills and possibilities to progress further with their education and chosen career.

The Timothy Wells Charitable Trust Alumni programme was launched to the students at the Mentorship Day in April 2021. The plan is to build an ongoing link with those students who have benefitted from the sponsorship of the Trust and to give them an opportunity to continue to be part of the Trust. The Alumni Certificate (see below) was handed out to a handful of students who, having graduated from the sponsorship programme, have gone on to build a strong future for themselves in terms of a career/vocation.

Examples of two of the graduates who received this certificate are:

- Antony Mwangi Munyua who has completed his Teacher Training Diploma in Physics and Maths

- Lucas Murimi Waweru who has completed his vocational certificate in electrical car wiring and is now a self-employed automotive engineer

**(b) the relief of poverty, hardship and distress worldwide, and in particular amongst persons throughout the world who are persecuted for their Christian faith and persons in East Africa:**

In 2018 the local accountant for the TWCT in Kenya opened a ‘Cooperative Finance System’ that the TWCT pays regular contributions to. Local people can borrow money from the account and pay it back with a low interest rate. Any profit on the account is returned to the Trust. We are continuing to make payments into the Cooperative Finance System in order to support the local Kenyan community.

The cooperative tea farm in the Kirinyaga Diocese, sited on land purchased by the Timothy Wells Charitable Trust in 2016, continues to be managed with student participation, providing a good opportunity for selfdevelopment, teamwork and bonding.

Various contributions to UK-based charities such as: Amnesty International, International Liberty Association, Barnabas Fund, Send A Cow, Gurkha Welfare Trust, Christian Solidarity Worldwide.

## **(c) the advancement of the Christian faith:**

Various contributions to UK-based charities such as All Souls Church, London; St Helen’s Church, Premier Christian Media, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Evangelical Alliance, Jews for Jesus, Tearfund, Feba Radio, Langham International.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

As of 31[st] December 2021, there were financial reserves in both the **Brief statement of the** Trust’s UK and Kenyan-based bank accounts: **charity’s policy on reserves** UK: Barclays Community Account: £7,161.91

Kenya: Co-operative Bank Account 1,217,716 KES (Kenyan Shillings) = c£8,200 @ 147 KES:£1 FX)

These funds are carried over into 2022 to continue the ongoing work of the Trust and in particular to ensure a continuing education opportunity for the sponsored students in Kenya with school and university fees paid in a timely manner.

**Details of any funds materially** NA **in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.

Of note, during 2021 the Kenya-based Trustees spent a significant amount of their time as volunteers carrying out a thorough approval process for new students to be accepted onto the Timothy Wells Charitable Trust’s sponsorship education programme in Kenya. This involved a fair amount of travel, visiting the families of potential students in their homes and doing due diligence to ensure they accepted those students who would benefit the most from the sponsorship.

Due to the time commitment required for this crucial aspect of the running of the Timothy Wells Sponsorship Programme in Kenya, the Trust has decided to appoint a Charity Coordinator. The job vacancy advert for the Charity Coordinator role is shown below with the plan to appoint someone during the autumn of 2022:
