Timothy Wells set up a committee of trustees based in Kenya during his December 2018 trip.

The committee of trustees includes two teachers and a student representative (a graduate of the TWCT sponsorship programme).

This committee of trustees is responsible for assessing any new student referrals for the sponsorship programme. The plan is to take on up to five new students a year (though that was not possible in the 2020 global pandemic year).

The Kenya-based Committee plans to meet three times a year; in April, August and December. Among other things, the accounts are checked.

Committee members are available to mentor/counsel the students at any time.

## **Section C Objectives and activities**

In 2020 the funds were split approximately 80:20 East African Education Sponsorship:UK Charities.

- Most of the funds were donated to ACK (Anglian Church of Kenya) Kirinyaga Diocese in Kenya for the running of the Timothy Wells Sponsorship Programme there.

Section D Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Timothy Wells’ End of Year 2020 Statement:

This year of the global pandemic has impacted the work in Kenya in two respects:

1. TW was unable to visit the Educational programme in Kenya

2. Secondary schools were shut down in March 2020 for the rest of the year.

The first issue meant no face-to-face meetings with either the students or the Diocesan Committee members.

There was no end-of-year Mentorship Event staying at a resort. All Committee meetings were conducted via Zoom. Student representative George Mwangi was voted to receive an allowance of Ksh5,000 per month to keep in touch with all students, feeding back information to the Committee and talking to TW via WhatsApp each week.

The lockdown of schools resulted in a saving in school fees. University tuition continued remotely (with just a slight fee reduction). Mentorship gatherings were conducted on a smaller scale. This resulted in an expenditure reduction of approx. £4,000 for the Kenyan Education programme.

In an attempt to encourage the students while staying at home for so long, we decided to gift each of them with five one-month old chicks plus some enhanced feed. These were handed over at an event at the Diocesan Office in September 2020.

In early 2020 a flyer introducing the charitable trust was produced with TW’s input. It is being distributed in Kenya and UK in order to attract further donors for the Sponsorship Programme.

The reduction in expenditure for Africa during 2020 meant that the Trust was able to respond to some emergency appeals from UK charities that we support.

Section D Achievements and erformance p

Activities during 2020 relating to the charity’s main objectives:

**(a) the advancement of the education of persons in East Africa:** This year the charity sponsored 17 secondary school and further education students needing financial assistance, as identified by the Diocese, giving the individuals the skills and possibilities to progress further with their education and chosen career.

One of the TWCT’s students has progressed so well at his boarding school that he has been elected Head Boy _(March 2020)._

**(b) the relief of poverty, hardship and distress worldwide, and in particular amongst persons throughout the world who are persecuted for their Christian faith and persons in East Africa:**

In 2018 the local accountant for the TWCT in Kenya opened a ‘Cooperative Finance System’ that the TWCT pays regular contributions to. Local people can borrow money from the account and pay it back with a low interest rate. Any profit on the account is returned to the Trust. The plan is for this to provide ongoing income for the Trust. The scheme had a couple of contributions in 2019, and the aim is to build it up slowly over the next few years.

## **(c) the advancement of the Christian faith:**

Various contributions to UK charities such as All Souls Church, London; St Helen’s Church, Premier Christian Media Trust, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Evangelical Alliance.

## **(d) the protection and preservation of the environment and the preservation of endangered species of animals:**

Various contributions to UK charities such as National Trust, London Wildlife Trust, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, WWF UK, RSPB, Greenpeace Environmental Trust, Plantlife International, Friends of the Earth Trust, Soil Association.

## **(e) the relief of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or from cancer:**

Various contributions to UK charities such as Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Research.
