The day to day running of the Charity is managed by the Board of Trustees as there are no active employees within the Charity. The Board of Trustees take support from external professionals, such as IT and accountancy support, as and when they identify a need.
Decisions regarding the management process are proposed and voted on at full board meetings which are held regularly throughout the year.
Mission statement
AFFCAD UK’s aim is to fundraise for projects implemented by Action for Fundamental Change and Development (AFFCAD) in Uganda. AFFCAD UK raises awareness of the problems faced and the solutions available to empower communities in less developed countries, specifically focusing on these issues within Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

Foreward by our Co-founder, Liz Parker
“It’s been an incredibly hard year, globally. I have seen people in our community of Bwaise without food, without education and without means to help themselves for the first time since I visited back in 2011. I’ve heard stories of young people having restricted access to their ARTs or not being able to get to hospital in time to save a life. The government lockdown in response to COVID-19, throughout 2020, has indeed had a devasting impact. I would like to use this opportunity to thank everyone who donated to the COVID-19 appeal; to everyone who provided positivity, optimism and practical support during this year and to our long-time donors and friends. I am extremely proud of what we have achieved in response to the
urgent need in Bwaise. To Jack Pike for committing to run 12 races in 12 months, to Will Spence for not giving up on supporting AFFCAD and completing the Brighton Marathon in 2021, and to Berber Boosch who, after many years continues to pay the school fees for one of our amazing students.
Emergency appeals are not sustainable but during this extraordinary year, it was absolutely essential. I am grateful to every single person who contributed their time or money to helping us make the COVID-19 relief project such a success. I am looking forward to a time in the future where our projects can bring happiness and empowerment in a greater sense of the term.” Liz Parker, Co-founder, and former Chair
A message from the Trustees
I joined AFFCAD UK earlier this year as I wished to support a charity close to where I was born in Uganda. I have seen at first hand the challenges faced by the local community. As the new Chair of this wonderful organisation, I will aim to guide the Trustees in the areas of governance, risk management and engagement with schools and corporates. We are all volunteers, from a small team of trustees to the dedicated individuals who manage our fundraising, project administration, technical support and public relations. It is so pleasing to note for every £1 in revenue, 97.6 pence goes directly to support our sister organisation in Uganda.
I would like to thank Liz and Sam for their vision and dedication throughout the years, we know they will continue to support us. Whilst we are now enjoying returning back to some sort of normality post covid here in the U.K., the families in Bwaise are struggling. Struggling to pay for the basic necessities of food and shelter. This is a very challenging time and AFFCAD U.K. are working with the team on the ground to support as many people as possible.

Activities in 2020
2020 for AFFCAD UK, started with the same optimism and energy as any New Year. It was the second year of operation for AFFCAD School, with us seeing record enrollment numbers; we were well on our way to sustainability. Fee paying student numbers continued to rise even after the start of term in February.
We proudly hosted DIFID at AFFCAD school with a day of highlighting the climate change and sexual reproductive health issues in Uganda. It is a partnership we hope to build on in the future.
Thanks to St James’ Place Wealth
Management and the Nobel Caledonian Charitable Trust we launched and completed our Safe Water Project. Clean accessible water continues to be a problem for many people in Bwaise; this project has enabled all of the children at our school and some members of the wider community to access clean drinking water. The knock-on effects of this on health and education are huge. The construction of the freshwater well at

AFFCAD School takes us one step closer to sustainability. We are now looking into funding options for solar panels as a way to sustainably power our school.
3[rd] March 2020 was a day of huge celebration at AFFCAD Uganda as 502 of our students at ABVI (AFFCAD Business and Vocational Training Institute) graduated with an amazing 98% pass rate. This is the last cohort of students funded by the EU - SSCoS (Strengthening Social Cohesion and Stability in Slum communities) project. AFFCAD UK continues to support ABVI across our social media platforms and advocate for ABVI through raising awareness and looking for future funding.
The first quarter of the year also saw a brightening up of our school as the mural designed by Dulwich College students during their visit in 2019 was completed. Our school partnerships continue to flourish with St Saviour’s and St Olaves sending over hundreds of Easter gifts for AFFCAD School students to help with learning, personal hygiene and simply having fun! We waved goodbye to Hadijah our long-standing Head Teacher of AFFCAD school as she embarks on further training in education in the USA, we wish her all the very best with her new venture.
Things were looking so promising and then later in March 2020, Uganda recorded its first Covid-19 case. As with the rest of the world, the virus spread quickly and the country went into lockdown. With no access to online lessons, no stored food or financial savings, the nationwide lockdown severely affected the community of Bwaise. Crime rates soared, cases of STIs and teenage pregnancies increased, domestic violence became an increasingly serious problem and people became hungry with lack of access to jobs and therefore food. AFFCAD UK together with AFFCAD Uganda launched the Covid-19 Appeal and soon raised an incredible £22,595 through grants and donations. This money was used to distribute food parcels and learning recourses to hundreds of families in community. We were overwhelmed with the support from our long-standing individual

donors and partners; special thanks to Souter’s for the large donation and to everyone who contributed to this emergency relief, it saved lives.
We completed a second distribution drive of food, masks and learning materials as part of the Covid19 Relief Project. Later in the year the lockdown started to ease however schools and learning centres remained closed throughout the rest of 2020.

Outlook for 2021
Writing this report in 2021 we know that following the easing of the lockdown the situation in Uganda did not improve. Uganda experienced a second, harder hitting wave of Covid-19 in June 2021. At the time of writing the vaccine rate remains low at 0.53% of the population. As a result of the pandemic AFFCAD is running on a skeleton staff structure; both school and vocational training centres will be closed for some time.
We plan to be resourceful and dynamic in our support for the community of Bwaise as the pandemic continues into 2021. We will work closely with AFFCAD to do our best in helping contain the disease and maintain the level of education and health programs that we have been working so hard to develop over the last 5 years.
We will then work on the recovery plan – reopening AFFCAD School and ABVI, rebuilding the structures we had in place and working as ever, towards sustainability, at the same time helping AFFCAD as an NGO to regain full strength. Our hope is that the pandemic situation will improve towards the end of 2021, that vaccine numbers will increase and Covid-19 cases will continue to fall so we are able to start operations on the ground with full steam again.
Reserves Policy
AFFCAD UK wish to retain a level of reserves that ensures financial stability and that will allow any financial commitments to be met.
The trustees feel that having nine months of unrestricted expenditure held in reserves will ensure the above and therefore endeavour to keep funds at a minimum of this level at all times.
