African Education Foundation
Reports and accounts for the period ended 30 April 2025
Annual Report for the period ending 30[th] April 2025
The African Education Foundation funds the education of African children in the field of science.
Founded in 2016. Its mission is to provide the opportunity for education in science throughout South Africa initially, with potential for roll-out to neighbouring countries in the future.
We achieve this through the funding of equipment, apparatus and literature needed for the teaching of science.
The Africa Foundation is a fully legal charity, registered in the United Kingdom, and its main purpose is to act as a reliable conduit for the donating of funds from the United Kingdom directly to their desired source in South Africa.
Initially, the Foundation was focussed on using donations to assist with the funding of science education at the Nhlambanyathi High School in Sodwana Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Donations through the Foundation can be either monetary, or actual purchases of products such as books, science kits and equipment for the school. We are also looking to fund bigger one-off projects, such as the funding of a science laboratory.
The Foundation ensures all donations go towards all projects that are in line with the aims of the Foundation to further science education in those countries that need the support.
PROJECT MISSION - The mission of this project is to refurbish an existing classroom at the Nhlambanyathi High School and transform it into a suitably equipped science laboratory to improve the education standards in the field of science at the school.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL - The Nhlambanyathi High School is situated in the coastal village of Sodwana Bay, in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, on the coast of the Indian Ocean. The school was founded in 1991 with two teachers and approximately 30 pupils from the surrounding villages. At that time there was no high school in the area, and from the outset, the mission of the school was to educate its pupils in the field of science. All pupils are given the opportunity to learn General Science, Mathematics, Geography, History, Accounting and the languages IsiZulu, English and Afrikaans.
In 2016 the school had 224 pupils with an age range of 14 to 23 years. There are 8 teachers to educate the aforementioned subjects in the South African syllabus.
After completing their education at the school, pupils can continue their tertiary education at the University of Zululand, near Richards Bay in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal. Pupils may also continue their education at the Mthashana FET College, also in KwaZulu-Natal.
Further work has started in the Umkomaas area to create an after-school care programme to assist pupils where they are struggling with the existing curriculum.
And further to this a sponsorship programme to pay for children to attend a pre-school to give them a fighting chance before being put into the mainstream system.
The preschool is run by Naomi and Based on Mackenzie Street in Umkomaas. The annual cost for a place for one child is ~£850.
Unfortunately, there were no suitable candidates for this year. However previous years have shown sponsored children excelling when moving on to the main educational system as they have been given the basic skills of reading, writing and social engagement.
Funds remaining in the charity will also be held to help fund University places once any sponsored child finishes schooling with the required grades
