Over the past fourteen years, the RCYC Sailing Trust has worked with over forty schools, giving thousands of children the opportunity to experience life on the water.
Behind every trip is our small but very committed team of volunteers. Schools provide the professional support for the children, while our volunteers quietly make everything else happen. They secure donated pasties from Rowe's, fruit and water from Sainsbury's, ferry transport from John Pill, organise boat charters, arrange parking through Falmouth Rugby Club, transport drivers, write grant applications, manage the charity's finances and ensure every trip runs safely and smoothly.
None of this happens by accident. It happens because people care. Those of us lucky enough to volunteer often come home deeply moved by what we have witnessed. A smile from a child who rarely smiles. A first taste of independence. A new friendship. A moment of calm. A memory that families and schools will talk about for years afterwards.
These experiences can genuinely change lives. But we cannot continue without financial support.

The RCYC Children's Sailing Trust's aim is simple: to ensure that every child, regardless of background or ability, has the chance to experience the sea, develop new skills and gain confidence through sailing and boating activities.
We provide free of charge life-enhancing sailing and boating experiences for children from across Cornwall, including some of the county's most deprived communities – those who face social, economic or educational disadvantage, both those in special and in mainstream schools. The majority of the children have physical disabilities, learning disabilities, autism, or other additional needs and many are experiencing being on the water for the first time despite living in Cornwall.
Each year we enable between 100 and 200 children to experience being on the water and observing local marine life and historic sites aboard larger pleasure craft, while around 20 children take part in hands-on sailing sessions in smaller boats where they can take responsibility for operating the boat under supervision. They are able to experience the sea as active participants rather than spectators.
Many of the children we support would not otherwise have the opportunity to access these activities. Despite living in a coastal county, financial constraints, disability, additional support needs or family circumstances mean that many have never been on the water. We work closely with schools, carers and support staff to ensure that children who would benefit most can participate safely and confidently.
Through sailing and boating activities they develop confidence, teamwork, communication skills and self-belief while enjoying experiences that many of their peers take for granted. By taking part in a shared adventure, they experience success, build resilience and discover abilities they may not have recognised in themselves. Teachers, carers and support staff regularly tell us that participants return with increased confidence and a strong sense of achievement.
We are lucky in that local companies support us, with contributions such as pasties, fruit and water for days out, and in some cases concessions on the cost of boat hire. We are formed from a group of volunteers and incur no staffing costs.
