History
‘Something To Look Forward To’ was founded by Fiona and Andy Coldron in 2015 as a direct response to Fiona’s personal experience of living with a terminal cancer diagnosis and the impact this had on her, her family, and their finances. They found that small treats like a meal out or a night away gave them ‘Something To Look Forward To’ and this respite, from the relentless slog of hospital visits, scans and treatment gave a great sense of wellbeing and assisted in the recovery process for them both. However, they also learnt firsthand the financial impact that comes hand and hand with a cancer diagnosis known as ‘cancer poverty’ meaning that at a time when they wanted to do these nice things suddenly became a time they could least afford to do so.

SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
TRUSTEES’ REPORT
for the year ended 30 November 2024
Fiona dedicated the last 6 years of her life to running the charity and improving the lives of others affected by cancer alongside her husband, daughter, and their small, dedicated staff team. Fiona sadly passed away in 2021 and the charity is now spearheaded by her daughter Francesca and her husband Andy in her memory.
Context
This report covers the charity’s ninth year of operations. This year was one of consolidation and steady progress, as our Managing Director Francesca Abery took maternity leave and a maternity cover stepped in to lead the team. Amidst significant staff changes, our focus was on maintaining the quality and consistency of our services rather than expanding them. Thanks to the dedication of our team and the support of our partners, we were able to continue delivering meaningful impact while laying a stable foundation for future growth.
Provision
The charity continued to provide the following donated gifts and experiences which are sourced from businesses, individuals and partners:
-
Holidays and short breaks – These gifts provide couples and families with a break from their usual world of cancer treatment, scans, and results.
-
Dining experiences – These gifts allow couples and families to spend valuable time together outside of the home creating positive memories.
-

-

SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
TRUSTEES’ REPORT for the year ended 30 November 2024
Breakdown of gifts and experiences
Our gifts fall into 3 categories including Main Gifts; which tend to be weeklong holidays, Additional Gifts; which tent to be a hotel stay or restaurant meal and Extra Gifts; which tend to be tickets to events and attractions. The breakdown of gift category by allocation
is as follows:
| is as follows: | |
|---|---|
| Main | 18% |
| Additional | 49% |
| Extra | 33% |
Demographics
Average Age 48 Male 12% Female 88% English / Welsh / Scottish / Northern Irish / 79% British Irish Other (A more detailed breakdown can be 21% provided on request) Building on our Male Engagement Programme which launched in 2020 which at the beginning saw only 3% of men using our service, we are proud to see a significant increase in the number of men being supported by our charity. This has been achieved via both our gift sourcing strategy and positive discrimination when assessing and allocating support. Following our Strategy Day in 2023 it was apparent that most of our beneficiaries were White British, and this was a key area we needed to address. Therefore, one area of our strategic plan was to increase the number of people from other ethnic backgrounds who used our service. We achieved this via our gift sourcing strategy, our regional project delivery and through positive discrimination during assessment and allocation.
Cancer Poverty
When requesting feedback from our beneficiaries to evaluate the impact our service has had, we ask people to scale themselves using the following question: How much was your financial situation impacted by your cancer diagnosis? (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest) The average self-reported rating was 6 out of 10 indicating a moderate financial impact. Qualitative feedback highlighted the following:

TRUSTEES’ REPORT
for the year ended 30 November 2024
“I had to give up work and it can be very isolating being at home a lot and not having the finances for treats as every penny must be spent on day to day living. Guilt as a parent makes it even worse. I suffer from depression and my diagnosis has triggered this.” (Beneficiary)
“This service is fantastic. It’s nice to have little and big things to look forward to. Money is hard and most spare cash goes on parking t hospital and travelling to treatment etc so to have a little gift is amazing.” (Beneficiary)
Business Partnerships
We maintained key partnerships with larger businesses who could donate a higher quantity of gifts and experiences helping us improve our reach within the cancer community and improve efficiency of service delivery.
New partnerships formed this year included:

-
Nelson Hotels

Managing the Elizabeth Coteman Fund
Since 2017, we have worked in close partnership with the Elizabeth Coteman Fund (ECF), whose support has enabled us to deliver vital services to people affected by pancreatic cancer. In 2024, we were honoured to take on the full management of the ECF’s grant funding in memory of Elizabeth Coteman. This important development allows us to provide bespoke respite opportunities, gifts, experiences, and vouchers to individuals and families facing financial hardship due to a pancreatic cancer diagnosis up to the value of £350.
This new model offers long-term, sustainable funding, ensuring we can respond quickly and effectively to every application we receive. As both of our charities were founded in memory of loved ones lost to cancer, this collaboration represents a meaningful legacy—

one that continues to bring comfort, relief, and hope to those experiencing the emotional and financial strain of cancer.
A new partnership with The Ruth Strauss Foundation
In 2023 we were approached by The Ruth Strauss Foundation who wanted us to manage their Gift and Experience Giving Programme for parents/primary caregivers with an incurable cancer diagnosis where there is a youngest child who is 25 or under.
The Ruth Strauss Foundation offers free guidance and support to parents on how to start and continue conversations with their children when a parent has been diagnosed with an incurable cancer. They understand how important it is for families to create meaningful memories and spend quality time together during such a difficult time—without the added financial pressure.
STLFT & RSF confirmed their partnership in 2024 are now working together in partnership to offer families access to special gifts and experiences up to the value of £350 funded by the RSF and administered by STLFT. These moments can provide the time and space needed to connect, reflect, and talk openly, helping families feel supported and better prepared for the future.
The 4 Cancer Group
We continued our partnership with The 4 Cancer Group and worked in partnership to offer Holidays with Ferry crossings on the Ise of Wight. The 4 Cancer Group has been providing respite through days out and short breaks for families affected by cancer since 2001. Their belief—that time spent together, away from daily pressures, is one of the most valuable gifts—aligns closely with our mission at ‘Something To Look Forward To’.
Through our partnership, we have been able to extend the reach and impact of their respite programme by offering even more opportunities for families to create lasting memories. From Ferry Crossings enabling families to connect to Isle of Wight holiday park breaks, these experiences give families something positive to focus on during the most challenging times. Together, we are helping to bring moments of joy, connection, and relief to those who need it most.

| TRUSTEES’ REPORT for the year ended 30 November 2024 Eve’s Place Caravan, Hunstanton Our charity caravan funded by the Pink Ribbon Foundation entered its third year of welcoming families affected by breast cancer for weeklong holidays that they couldn’t otherwise afford. Our caravan is open 48 weeks of the year whilst the holiday park is open and remains extremely popular with our breast cancer community. “Thank you so much. I don’t have the right words to summaries how much the holiday meant to us, but we are incredibly grateful and had lots of fun and quality time together. I think it is the first time since diagnosis where I have felt happy.” (Beneficiary) Projects During the period of this report, we successfully delivered the following projects: • Nationwide General Project (self-funded) • Breast Cancer Project (Funded by the Pink Ribbon Foundation) • Project London (Funded by Brockwell Live) • Project North of England (Funded by The Woodhill Charitable Trust) • Project Cambridge (Funded by The Cambridgeshire Community Foundation) • Project Essex (Funded by The Essex Community Foundation) • Suffolk (Suffolk Community Foundation) • Project The North of England (Funded by The Woodhill Charitable Trust) Impact We continued to measure our impact across four main themes: Emotional Health and Wellbeing; Emotional impact on family and Carers; Identity; and Isolation. We ask beneficiaries to scale themselves on how they were feeling before and after using our service using a ten-point scale, with ten the highest level of wellbeing, and 1 being the lowest as well as leaving qualitative feedback. Our quantitative results are as follows: Theme Average Rating Before Using Our Service Average Rating After Using our Service Wellbeing % increase Isolation & Loneliness 4.8 7.1 48% Emotional Health & Wellbeing 4.2 7.3 74% Emotional impact on family & Carers 4.6 7.5 63% Identity 3.6 6.5 80% |

SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
TRUSTEES REPORT’ for the year ended 30 November 2024
On average, service users rated their experience of applying for, receiving, and using their gift or experience from ‘Something To Look Forward To’ as 9.7 out of 10. Considering these scores, we believe we delivered a highly professional service which made a considerable impact across the often-overlooked areas of need within the cancer community.
Qualitative feedback evidences the following:
Isolation and Loneliness
“Before I used the service, I was lonely and isolated. There’s not a great deal to look forward to during cancer treatment. We wouldn’t be treating ourselves at this time if it wasn’t for this charity. It was lovely to be able to spend time with some of my family just playing games and enjoying the views from the cottage.” (Beneficiary)
Emotional Health & Wellbeing
“ As well as the horrendous physical toll of cancer and its treatment, the emotional toll has been crippling too. I’ve been struggling with anxiety since starting treatment 9 months ago. I find leaving the house and going to public spaces difficult, particularly if I’m not with my husband. He and my home have become my safe place. I can’t put into words how beneficial this week has been on so many different levels. The opportunity to get out and about as a family again, spend some quality time together, and to refresh and renew has been invaluable. I still have a lot to get through treatment wise, I’m physically and emotionally exhausted. The trauma of the last 9 months runs deep, but this amazing gift was a real emotional boost, just what we needed to get through the rest of my treatment. It really has been so special, a huge step towards recovery and a massive confidence boost towards building our new normal. (Beneficiary)
Emotional Impact on Family & Carers
“My husband and I spent some much-needed time together, just the two of us to reconnect, away from cancer land and our daily stressors. Thank you to STLFT and Andy from the Inn Collection Group for organising this amazing break for us. It gave my husband a break as much as me as he is the one who has been looking after me, the kids, and the house throughout my treatment. This gift made us shift from patient and carer, back to husband and wife which I can’t thank you all enough for. Thank you, thank you. Thank you!” (Beneficiary)
Identity
“Living with a life-limiting condition that is now starting to affect my physical abilities is incredibly difficult. It's not just hard for me; my wife is also on this unplanned journey with me. We're not only grappling with the physical challenges of the illness but also enduring its tremendous psychological impact. It gave us the chance to spend time together doing something "normal" that we would never have done otherwise—like having afternoon tea! Living with cancer can make it easy to lose your sense of identity; you often feel like you're no longer yourself, just a patient enduring treatment to stay alive.” (Beneficiary)

TRUSTEES’ REPORT
Fundraising
Our fundraising strategy continued focussing on the following key areas: Trusts & Foundations, Community Events and Corporate Giving. We also maintained our Regular Giving program – Memory Makers and received additional one-off donations. Notable community fundraising events included the Cambridge Half Marathon and the Dream Challenges Trek (Kenya).
Website Development
In 2023, ‘Something To Look Forward To’ was awarded a grant from Growth Works to support the charity’s digital development. As a result, the website was fully redeveloped in 2024 to introduce greater automation, streamline internal processes, and significantly improve efficiency. These enhancements have made it easier for beneficiaries to apply for and receive gifts, ensuring a more accessible, user-friendly experience for individuals and families during an already difficult time.
Strategic Planning
Strategic planning ensures our charity remains focused, resilient, and responsive to the evolving needs of the people we support. Our current strategic priorities include strengthening beneficiary services, improving digital access, equality and diversity, and securing sustainable funding. In the past year, we have taken significant steps toward our strategic goals by launching a new digital platform, expanding our reach amongst men and ethnic minorities, and building new partnerships to enhance service delivery. Looking ahead, we will focus on strengthening our impact measurement, diversifying income streams, and further personalising support for beneficiaries. Our strategic planning process included input from beneficiaries, staff, and partner organisations to ensure our direction remains grounded in the needs of those we serve.

for the year ended 30 November 2024
1. Accounting Policies
Charity information
Something To Look Forward To is a private company limited by guarantee incorporated in England and Wales. The registered office is 84 Coleridge Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, CB1 3PJ.
1.1 Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's [governing document], the Companies Act 2006, FRS 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' ('FRS 102') and the Charities SORP 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)' (effective 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.
1.2 Going concern
The Trustees have prepared financial projections, taking into consideration the current economic conditions and have, at the time of approving these accounts, a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus, they continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the accounts.
1.3 Income from donations or grants
Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.
17
SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (Continued)
for the year ended 30 November 2024
Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognized at the time of the donation.
1.4 Legacies
Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.
1.5 Donated goods
Donations and gifts include income from donated goods of £207,968 (2023: £449,580), which is measured at the fair value of the goods donated unless this is impractical to measure reliably, in which case the value is derived from the cost to the donor or the estimated resale value.
Donated facilities and services are recognised in the accounts when received if the value can be reliably measured. No amounts are included for the contribution of general volunteers.
1.6 Expenditure
Expenditure is recognized once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, itis probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.
Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.
1.7 Taxation
The charity is exempt from taxation on its activities because all its income is applied for charitable purposes.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (Continued)
for the year ended 30 November 2024
1.8 Financial instruments
The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 'Basic Financial Instruments' and Section 12 'Other Financial Instruments Issues' of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.
Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.
Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognized amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to release the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
Basic financial assets
Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortized cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortized.
Basic financial liabilities
Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortized.
Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortized cost, using the effective interest rate method.
Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as noncurrent liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (Continued) for the year ended 30 November 2024
Derecognition of financial liabilities
Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity's contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.
1.9 Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.
Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:
| Name | Rate (%) | Year | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixtures, Fittings & Equipment | 4 | Straight Line Basis |
The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset, and is recognised in the statement of financial activities. At each reporting end date, the charity reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If any such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is estimated in order to determine the extent of the impairment loss (if any).
