Structure, Governance and Management

The charity was set up in 2009 in memory of a special little girl, Georgia, who attended Holly Grove School, and sadly passed away due to ill health. The purpose of the charity it to raise money for our pupils, who have learning difficulties and disabilities, and their families. The Georgia Fourie Butterfly Fund was registered with the charity commission on 15[th] December 2015.

The charity board is made up of people from different sectors including school staff, parents and members of the wider community. The current board of trustees was appointed at an AGM held in September 2022. Trustees are appointed for a period of three years after which they are eligible for re-appointment. Judith Wright has joined the charity as a trustee, she was originally an observer.

The trustees are responsible for the charity's governance and its use of funds. The day to day management of the charities affairs have been delegated to Katie Wood.

The trustees do not receive any payment or benefit in kind from the charity and do not have any financial interest in the supply of goods or services to the charity.

Message from the Chair

This year has been a busy and exciting year as we continue to expand the charity and support a growing number of children and their families. In particular, this year, we have committed to supporting Holly Grove’s after school and holiday provision ‘Merry Berries’. This is an invaluable community resource that provides safe and stimulating out of school provision for pupils with SEND, ran by qualified and passionate staff. This will see our fundraising and bid writing initiatives increase hugely, as we look to raise over £25,000.

As the school expands we have also been able to support our upper school pupils with some much needed resources in the additional building including a state of the art sensory swing, to support the pupils in their emotional regulation.

We have enjoyed another two residentials to Blackpool for our lower school pupils and Bendrigg Lodge for our upper school pupils. The children had an amazing time and made memories that they will never forget!

I would like to put on record my thanks to all the trustees for their continued support, to Katie Wood our charity co-ordinator who works so hard behind the scenes and to everyone who has fundraised or donated to our charity this year. We are forever grateful for your support.

Objectives and Activities

Our main objective as set out in our governing document is to enhance the lives of children with special needs attending Holly Grove School and their families and carers, by such means at the trustees determine including the provision of grant funding. We want to raise money to benefit our pupils and their parents.

The Georgia Fourie Helping Hand is a subsidiary of The Georgia Fourie Butterfly Fund. The Helping Hand Grant is awarded twice a year to families identified by a panel made up from the trustees of the Georgia Fourie Butterfly Fund who have no connection to any pupils at the school, therefore making the decision to choose which families will receive the grant an impartial one. The decision will be made from the information given by the families on the completed application form and those that meet the criteria will be decided by the panel. Those who have been successful are not eligible to apply again for 12 months. Once a family have received it twice they are no longer eligible to apply. There are two windows of opportunity, January and September. No late applications are accepted although families can request their application to be deferred to the next window. The Helping Hand grant is aimed at promoting positive life outcomes, primarily for the child attending Holly Grove and also for the whole family.

Achievements and Performance

The Helping Hand Grant has helped 22 families this year. Each family can apply for a grant of up to £100 from the charity. We have spent £1200 this year and this has gone towards purchasing items like sensory toys, hydro sessions, trips out for a family in need, sensory lights, bedding…

Eve and her team took 11 pupils to Blackpool this year. They had a fantastic time visiting the zoo, circus and the beach. Happy Days Charity gave us £1200 towards Blackpool which was a massive help. We have applied again for May 2024 so hopefully we will be able to receive this funding again.

The Georgia Fourie Butterfly Fund now funds Merry Berries along with parental contributions. We do need approximately £25,000 a year to keep this after school club going and are currently looking at other funding options. Rona McFall, a professional bid writer has been working with Katie, Nick & Lesley to try and secure some funding from the National Lottery. We are still waiting to hear if we have been successful or not.

We have spent £4067 on a much needed sensory swing and swing frame to make a sensory processing room for our upper school pupils.

Zoo Lab came into school for the day and pupils loves seeing and touching the animals. This cost us £538.

Holly Grove School have signed up to the Limitless Clarets Schools Programme. This programme aims to create a positive work environment for young people to thrive. Using a cohesive approach, they work closely with our school to deliver inclusive interventions to suit the needs of all. The programme will inspire young people with SEND or disabilities and help them to understand that their achievements are ‘Limitless.’ This programme has cost us £6780.

We have used our Emergency Fund to help 4 families. We have funded a washer, dryer, new flooring for a child’s room and a large bathtub for a pupil for use in the garden. We have spent £290.

We have also given £1589 to School Fund this year.

In February, Connor Moffatt walked to the summit of Pendle Hill 13 times in 24 hours. Connor completed this challenge and raised £2000. The money raised will go towards an immersive room and will provide experiences and opportunities for children with complex needs to support their engagement and interaction within a calm and stimulating environment.

During the summer holidays, Josh Ramsay completed 5 marathons in 5 days to raise money for our charity. Josh created his own route around burnley starting and finishing at Burnley College. Josh completed this and raised over £2300

We have received funding from Asda (£500,) Beat the Street (£200,) Tesco (£1000,) Marsden within Pennine Valley Freemasons (£250) and The Knights of St Columba 110 Club held a fundraising evening on our behalf and raised £1000 for us.

Joan Oliver held a raffle in her residential home and raised over £500.

Our Christmas Markets raised £1500 and we are hoping our next one will be even more successful.

We held a Butterfly Ball in June 2023 and raised over £12,000. We had a 3 course meal, raffle, auction, DJ & Sax Player and over 160 people attended. It was a huge success.

Reserves Policy

We need to keep money in reserves to the upkeep of our 7 seater car. We offer grants twice a year so we need to be able to fund this. We give a yearly donation to Holly Grove School to fund school trips and for Christmas presents for the children, and the future events we have planned we need money to pay deposits and buy resources for this.

Future Plans

We continue to value the importance of the residential visits for our pupils in both Lower school and Upper school. We have committed to raising £3000 to cover the cost of these trips.

We will need £1000 for our emergency fund to provide support to families facing financial crisis.

We will provide our ‘Helping Hand’ grant of £1500 to support parents with appropriate resources/activities during times of financial hardship.

We require £2150 to support the school fund which contributes to class trips and Christmas presents.

With ever tighter budgets within school we would like to provide £7000 towards curriculum enhancement days and experiences such as music, drama Zoo Lab etc. to ensure our pupils access a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum.

We ned to support Holly Grove School with their extended services, previously run by Social Enterprise. This will be a huge commitment with £30,000 worth of funding being proposed. This is made up of £25,000 to cover the running costs of Merry Berries for12 months and an additional £5,000 towards Holiday/Saturday club provision (if possible). This will hopefully ensure much needed after and out of school activities can continue for our pupils.

Total Funds required for Merry Berries/Saturday Clubs = £25,000/£5000

Total Funds required for all other projects = £14,650

We aim, where possible, to raise the required amount for Extended Services through grants with the help of a bid writer.

We aim to raise funds for all other projects through a Butterfly Ball, Charity Night, Christmas markets and other one off fundraising events throughout the year and through charitable donations.
