Trustees' Annual Report and Accounts: 2 Apr 2021 – 1 Apr 2022

In the reporting period 2 April 2021 to end of the financial year closing 1 April 2022, the accounts for International Wildlife Bond (IWB) are given in full at Appendix I to this Trustees’ Annual Report and Accounts. For the given reporting period, IWB’s financials can be summarised as:

Income: £46 Outgoings: £379

An accumulated income (donations) amount of £36.24 (rounded to £36.00) plus a HMRC Gift Aid credit of £10, gives a total on retention at IWB’s Metro Bank account of £57.79 (rounded to £58).

IWB continues to maintain a donations page via Giving Me (www.Giving.Me).

The annual, ongoing overheads/costs to maintain IWB remain minimal (WordPress renewal and licencing images etc.).

IWB continues to be A ‘Foundation’ Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). The Governing Document is correctly identified as Version 1.3, dated 13 October 2015 and IWB’s objectives remain unchanged.

IWB’s Trustees remain unchanged since IWB’s formation in August 2015.

IWB’s ambition to create an on-line platform to bring funds and conservation initiatives together has failed to progress due to the lack of adequate funding.

IWB’s initial funding was raised via an interest free loan with no overriding penalties, or due dates from Gillian Jane Wiggins of £2,000 (two thousand pounds). Repayment of this loan remains due when “ IWB has been established and successfully sourced alternative funding. ”

In terms of achievements in the period, IWB has continued to progress in two main areas:

In terms of specific areas of concern, action and results:

  1. The first reading of the Henry Smith MP’s “ Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill ” is due in the United Kingdom (UK) Houses of Parliament, 25 November 2022. IWB has continued to support the campaign to get such a Bill before the UK parliament. Such a ban is overwhelmingly supported by UK voters. The UK, Government Consultation, Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), “ Consultation on controls on the import and export of hunting trophies ” (closed 25 February 2020) and “ Call for Evidence on the scale and impacts of the import and export of hunting trophies ” (closed 25 February 2020). IWB submitted a response to both parts of the consultation, December 2019. There is an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) (page 304 of APPG Register, dated 6 October 2021), Banning Trophy Hunting which consists of Members of Parliament (including the late Sir David Amess MP) that back the call to end unrestricted imports of hunting trophies into the United Kingdom.

  2. IWB has continued to work with a consortium of non-government organisations (NGOs) throughout 2020/21 campaigning against trophy hunting, under the umbrella of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting.

  3. In support of the “ The Coalition to Stop Captive Breeding and Keeping of Lions and Other Big Cats for Commercial Purposes (the Coalition), ” IWB submitted to the South African Government’s Consultation on Conservation and Sustainable Use – South Africa, this included the issue of captive lions. However, the formal enactment of the proposed shut down of South Africa’s captive big cat industry is awaited. The dichotomy between South Africa’s consultation on sustainable use, its proposals that every individual animal’s welfare needs matter and speculative captive rhino breeding, elephant and leopard trophy hunting, game meat trade expansion etc. continues to be a concern – either South Africa is at a cross-roads to enshrine individual animal welfare, or it continues down a path of exploitation as the main driver that dictates how animal are treated.

  4. Scottish Wildcat - the Scottish government and Swedish government owned energy company, Vattenfall are seemingly hell bent (in the name of logging and industrial windfarm revenues) on destroying one of the few remaining bastions (Scottish government own the Clashindarroch forest) of the Scottish Wildcat, a rare and endangered species. The public inquiry report (reported as with Scottish Ministers, 17 October 2022) on whether the planned windfarm construction can go-ahead unhindered on the planned Clashindarroch forest site.

  1. IWB contributed £100 (22 May 2020) to Jagged Peak Films Ltd. production of " Lions, Bones and Bullets " – a film highlighting the cruelty of captive lion/big cat breeding in South Africa. This film was released for its first screening at the UK Houses of Parliament, 7 July 2022.

  2. In March 2022, the UK Ivory Act was finally scheduled for enactment 6 June 2022. IWB -

submitted, July 2021, to the UK consultation (“ UK Ivory Act Ivory bearing species consultation ”) to encompass other persecuted ivory bearing species such as “.… hippos, walruses and narwhals,” thus closing potential loop-holes within the Ivory Bill (2018).

  1. IWB has continued to support campaigns against the UK’s fur farming industry, submitting comments to various T&S Rabbits’ planning applications (including Cornwall, Buckinghamshire, Derbyshire etc.) that sought to expand rabbit exploitation for commodities such as fur. This work came to fruition with many applications refused at Local Planning Authority level and appeals rejected/withdrawn. In August 2022, T&S Rabbits shut its final East Bridgford rabbit farm, with commendable local support keen to see this facility closed – the rabbits have been taken into care and their deplorable ordeal ended. However, until the UK law ends the loop-holes whereby animals can be bred under the pretext of meat production with fur as a by-product, then this animal exploitation will potentially continue.

  2. IWB continues to support Wild Justice campaigns in the UK – the destructive nature of driven grouse shooting, to persecution of bird species, badger culling etc.

  3. IWB continues to campaign and highlight the exploitation of wildlife:

  4. a. The exploitation of African lions and other big cat species (such as tigers) within the abhorrent captive lion breeding and ‘canned’ hunting industry in South Africa and elsewhere;

  5. b. The Illegal wildlife trade and the ‘legal’ mechanisms that open avenues for laundering illicit and fraudulent exploitation;

  6. c. The ivory and rhino horn trade;

  7. d. Attempts by Japan (Norway and Iceland) to try to legitimise their activities and reinstate open, commercial whaling (against a backdrop of increasing pressures upon whale populations from ocean borne pollution and climate change);

We continue to keep campaigning and supporting others with similar missions - trying to raise awareness for animal and wildlife issues.....and hope it makes a difference to protect the planet’s wildlife.
